I didn't put my point across particularly well, you're right.

Not necessarily, gambles with old players don't always come off. The Dixon/Speedie example though was just a poor analogy, that's all.

Its just I've been able to see some fantastic players at Saints, a lot of who would never have come here in their prime (yet when they did we finished 2nd in the league so by no means average players). So I'll always be open to seeing an older head come in, if its the right one. As I sais earlier I thought the Jaidi signing was a really good one, he was past his best but just the right player we needed at that time.

No. Not mad.

He is a player of incredible pedigree but one near the end of his career and not a long term option.

He'll eat wages and prevent younger players from playing regularly/coming through. The very epitome of what we do not want to do.

Or best ever period came from picking up aging players past their peak and playing them with talented you youngsters.

I've never understood why people claim signing a certain type of player stops young players coming though. If they are good enough and ready for the premier league they will play. Hammond, Chaplow and Davis don't seem to have stopped Ward Prowse from playing have they.

I know what you mean Colin, but one season or two isn't going to stunt the growth of a young player, on the contrary. Think what players like JWP and Lallana could learn in that time.

Lots of us "oldies " recall the effect that playing alongside Alan Ball had for the young Steve Williams...and more recently the fantastic effect that Chris Marsden created in running our midfield.

This season needs... consolidation / survival - call it what you will, but IF TRUE - sound like a great deal -even for a short period.

But these kind of transfers and players aint just about what they add on the pitch but off it as well - commercially' date=' profile of the club etc... guess they just look at the cost v value and sometimes go for it. Can be a good idea[/quote']

yes, this is true.

Especially true if they stay on after they retire from playing. Look at viera at Man City. I think it really helps to convince a young talented player to sign if a real legend of the game meets him and shows him around the club and the area. Madrid and Man U have always done this.

I never see the logic of arguments AGAINST veterans in a side.

IF signed - Del Piero isn't going to be given a four year contract, but 12-18 months of his experience / skill in the side can be the making of some of the " younger " players.

NA won't play him 90 mins. every game, but give him 60 mins. of creative time and rest him up (as he did for Guly last season) and lengthen his shelf life even more.

Blackpool (excuse the language) ...used KEVIN Phillips (now 38?) sparingly last year, yet he came on as sub. and scored time after time and ended up one of their leading scorers.

I still hope this doesn't happen, don't get me wrong, quality player in his day but he does not fit the current Saints model.

Seriously mate, it's not just about the football. Have a look at Wikipedia, he's got other skills as well, & I quote....

"In February 2012, it was reported that a 12-year old girl had awakened from a 15-day coma by the soothing voice of her idol, Del Piero."

Imagine what kind of impact he could have with the rehabilitation of injured players. If we had him at the same time as Austin Delgado things could have been very different!

yeah - but would the same thing work on some of our sleepy defenders?

Actually he has discounted Australia as too far away and is considering a move to Celtic as they are playing CL this season and he still wants to play at that level, if only fior a season. Source : calciomercato corrier dello sport this morning.

Lucky Celtic if he goes there for a year, the ultimate marquee signing.

He's coming - we'll play him for 12-18 months then he'll graduate to a senior coaching and academy development role.

Will massively increase our future pulling power with impressionable, talented younger players who might normally dismiss us as prospective club. A genius move by Cortese et al.

After the rejection of the Zion reopen the hunt for Del Piero. Celtic is always pressing, want a gift for the qualification in the Champions League. Meanwhile back to the office Southampton, still interested. For Southampton has just signed Gaston Ramirez. The Uruguayan and Del Piero could be teammates ...

If we signed him and Ramirez tomorrow I would officially self-destruct.

It would be incredible.
