Saint Charlie Posted 23 August, 2012 Posted 23 August, 2012 Yes to ADP but only if we have secured the real targets that will make a difference week in week out ie Ramirez, Phillips, CB. As a bonus then it's a no brainer but as a serious idea as a player I'm unsure.
shirleysfc Posted 23 August, 2012 Posted 23 August, 2012 Italian. Perfect for when Serie A come calling. Very good
maysie Posted 23 August, 2012 Posted 23 August, 2012 I seriously hope not, I made it as unconvincing as I could! Its there.... https://twitter.com/Bradswag86/status/238753592671105024/photo/1 You're famous bud
The Kraken Posted 23 August, 2012 Posted 23 August, 2012 I didn't put my point across particularly well, you're right. Not necessarily, gambles with old players don't always come off. The Dixon/Speedie example though was just a poor analogy, that's all. Its just I've been able to see some fantastic players at Saints, a lot of who would never have come here in their prime (yet when they did we finished 2nd in the league so by no means average players). So I'll always be open to seeing an older head come in, if its the right one. As I sais earlier I thought the Jaidi signing was a really good one, he was past his best but just the right player we needed at that time.
Saint Scott Posted 23 August, 2012 Posted 23 August, 2012 Its there.... https://twitter.com/Bradswag86/status/238753592671105024/photo/1 You're famous bud I knew it!

Smirking_Saint Posted 23 August, 2012 Posted 23 August, 2012 I think the point was it wasnt at all convincing
Saint Scott Posted 23 August, 2012 Posted 23 August, 2012 I should have made it look half convincing. I'll be disappointed if this picture doesn't cover the back page of all national papers tomorrow.
Dark Munster Posted 24 August, 2012 Posted 24 August, 2012 Cue another 80 page thread... That would be appropriate: one page for each year of his age.
david in sweden Posted 24 August, 2012 Posted 24 August, 2012 even if he is a veteran, it's a step up from David Goodwillie - wouldn't you say ?
Turkish Posted 24 August, 2012 Posted 24 August, 2012 No. Not mad. He is a player of incredible pedigree but one near the end of his career and not a long term option. He'll eat wages and prevent younger players from playing regularly/coming through. The very epitome of what we do not want to do. Or best ever period came from picking up aging players past their peak and playing them with talented you youngsters. I've never understood why people claim signing a certain type of player stops young players coming though. If they are good enough and ready for the premier league they will play. Hammond, Chaplow and Davis don't seem to have stopped Ward Prowse from playing have they.
david in sweden Posted 24 August, 2012 Posted 24 August, 2012 I didn't put my point across particularly well, you're right. I know what you mean Colin, but one season or two isn't going to stunt the growth of a young player, on the contrary. Think what players like JWP and Lallana could learn in that time. Lots of us "oldies " recall the effect that playing alongside Alan Ball had for the young Steve Williams...and more recently the fantastic effect that Chris Marsden created in running our midfield. This season needs... consolidation / survival - call it what you will, but IF TRUE - sound like a great deal -even for a short period.
wireframebox Posted 24 August, 2012 Posted 24 August, 2012 I think Raul would have been a better option.
fish fingers Posted 24 August, 2012 Posted 24 August, 2012 Del Piero and Goodwillie partnership? Heskey out on the left then?
JustMike Posted 24 August, 2012 Posted 24 August, 2012 I still hope this doesn't happen, don't get me wrong, quality player in his day but he does not fit the current Saints model.
Thedelldays Posted 24 August, 2012 Posted 24 August, 2012 I still hope this doesn't happen, don't get me wrong, quality player in his day but he does not fit the current Saints model. what is the current saints model..?
Frank's cousin Posted 24 August, 2012 Posted 24 August, 2012 But these kind of transfers and players aint just about what they add on the pitch but off it as well - commercially, profile of the club etc... guess they just look at the cost v value and sometimes go for it. Can be a good idea
JustMike Posted 24 August, 2012 Posted 24 August, 2012 what is the current saints model..? under the age of 106 for a start

Can be a good idea[/quote'] Especially true if they stay on after they retire from playing. Look at viera at Man City. I think it really helps to convince a young talented player to sign if a real legend of the game meets him and shows him around the club and the area. Madrid and Man U have always done this.
david in sweden Posted 24 August, 2012 Posted 24 August, 2012 (edited) I never see the logic of arguments AGAINST veterans in a side. IF signed - Del Piero isn't going to be given a four year contract, but 12-18 months of his experience / skill in the side can be the making of some of the " younger " players. NA won't play him 90 mins. every game, but give him 60 mins. of creative time and rest him up (as he did for Guly last season) and lengthen his shelf life even more. Blackpool (excuse the language) ...used KEVIN Phillips (now 38?) sparingly last year, yet he came on as sub. and scored time after time and ended up one of their leading scorers. shirleysfc Posted 24 August, 2012 Posted 24 August, 2012 what is the current saints model..? Not signing legends of the game obviously!! FWIW I say sign him up!!
ibizasaint Posted 24 August, 2012 Posted 24 August, 2012 Personally I would be chuffed if we signed him, even to use sparingly. A legend in the true sense of the word.
Webby Posted 24 August, 2012 Posted 24 August, 2012 If he wanted a post playing role at a club, surely he'd have stayed on at his beloved Juventus in that capacity.
Spudders Posted 24 August, 2012 Posted 24 August, 2012 I still hope this doesn't happen, don't get me wrong, quality player in his day but he does not fit the current Saints model. Seriously mate, it's not just about the football. Have a look at Wikipedia, he's got other skills as well, & I quote.... "In February 2012, it was reported that a 12-year old girl had awakened from a 15-day coma by the soothing voice of her idol, Del Piero." Imagine what kind of impact he could have with the rehabilitation of injured players. If we had him at the same time as Austin Delgado things could have been very different!

SuperSAINT Posted 30 August, 2012 Posted 30 August, 2012 The chairman of A-League side Sydney FC claims Italian veteran Alessandro Del Piero is weighing up a move to the club after holding talks. Celtic and Swiss side FC Sion have also been linked.
S-Clarke Posted 30 August, 2012 Posted 30 August, 2012 I don't think there was ever a great deal in this to be honest. Probably if everything else went to pot.
Giordano Posted 30 August, 2012 Author Posted 30 August, 2012 Actually he has discounted Australia as too far away and is considering a move to Celtic as they are playing CL this season and he still wants to play at that level, if only fior a season. Source : calciomercato corrier dello sport this morning. Lucky Celtic if he goes there for a year, the ultimate marquee signing.
niemi14 Posted 30 August, 2012 Posted 30 August, 2012 Saints to sign Del Piero, Zola, Chiesa, Signori and Totti.
SuperSAINT Posted 30 August, 2012 Posted 30 August, 2012 Saints to sign Del Piero, Zola, Chiesa, Signori and Totti. Vialli?
brightspark Posted 30 August, 2012 Posted 30 August, 2012 Vialli? Roberto Mancini will also sign on to work as assistant to NA.
niemi14 Posted 30 August, 2012 Posted 30 August, 2012 Maldini and Baresi coming in to sort our defence out also.
SuperSAINT Posted 30 August, 2012 Posted 30 August, 2012 Reports emanating from Italy claim Celtic are in pole position to land Juventus legend Alessandro Del Piero. Del Piero is available on a free transfer after leaving Juve earlier this summer

adrian lord Posted 30 August, 2012 Posted 30 August, 2012 He's coming - we'll play him for 12-18 months then he'll graduate to a senior coaching and academy development role. Will massively increase our future pulling power with impressionable, talented younger players who might normally dismiss us as prospective club. A genius move by Cortese et al.

wireframebox Posted 30 August, 2012 Posted 30 August, 2012 Amusing that he supposedly turned down an offer from Spurs.
maxi_sopez Posted 30 August, 2012 Posted 30 August, 2012 If we sign Del Piero, i will go buy my first saints shirt for 10 years and have his name on my back... would be so amazing. What a legend. Sadly cant see it happening... would be so amazing though!

SNSUN Posted 30 August, 2012 Posted 30 August, 2012 Oh he'll sign. As player-manager. When Adkins retires. Tomorrow. In cloud cuckoo land. I'll wax my crack if we sign Del Piero tomorrow.

Toadhall Saint Posted 31 August, 2012 Posted 31 August, 2012 Cant see it myself but then again I voted no on the Ramirez thread.
