Wow, are people actually taking this seriously?

:lol::lol:

Nah not really. Just that 1 percent chance though is exciting. Could you imagine? A colossus of the footballing world at little old Southampton?

If he was somehow convinced to join us for a season it would be like when Keegan arrived.

Can you imagine him in our EPL team and what he could teach them about being a class act? And what it would do for our profile? Players like Lambert, Sharp, Guly, Lallana, De Ridder, Tadanari Lee even Barnard would learn so much. If we then had Jrod joining he would be learning from one of THE legends of world football.

Obviously a pipe dream but he is going to be playing somewhere next year and has not ruled anything out apart from its not Italy.

I'm allowed to think things like this because I can. :-)

....stand up all those who thought we were going to sign Michael Owen

No thankyou, would rather we signed Beckham.... and I don't want us to sign Beckham!

He has a habit of performing miracles though, younever know when that might come in handy.

One of the greatest players of all time. Comparable to Giggs and Scholes. Yes please. Almost certain not to happen but I would be amazed that people on here would turn him down.

No. Not mad.

He is a player of incredible pedigree but one near the end of his career and not a long term option.

He'll eat wages and prevent younger players from playing regularly/coming through. The very epitome of what we do not want to do.

why does every single player have to be a long term option..we=hy can't we have one for the now...lift the club, who can come in and command instant respect of everyone at the club...imagine what the long term prospect could learn off him in training....

we are trying to grow as a club..that does not mean every single signing has to be under 25

Yeah exactly. And FFS it's Del Piero. FFS...

It's just how I would do things personally. Would totally understand the excitement if he did sign but I would consider it to be not an entirely positive step.

Besides, it's all conjecture. He'll be off to Dubai/China for a final pay day.

Did you support Saints during the Lawrie Mac era? Or Chris Nichol, with Jimmy Case? I've got plenty of time for the right type of old pro coming in.

as a 32 year old...he was the reason I still watched football itlalia after Gazza left italy...

he is football royalty ffs....such an amazing player and did it at the highest level possible

I was 6 years old in 1990 and moved to Hampshire in 1994. So no.

I can't see anything negative about this deal (though as I mentioned it won't happen.) He would bring huge experience, a winning mentality and is just an utterly amazing player. Even if he is slower I'm sure he could teach our existing players so much.

I guess that explains it. Some of our most successful and exciting teams ever were built on a backbone of experienced pros who were seeing out the back-end of their careers with Saints.

Such a fan that I'd barely mind him being rubbish now. But don't see where he fits in. Great role model, great on the training ground, but wouldn't get many games. That said, hell of a sub, great set pieces, and perhaps a good understudy to Lallana? If AL loses form or gets injured, what better playmaker to come in? If Scholes can still cut it, and Giggs, why not Del Piero?

Just to see him in saints shirt a handful of times would be terrific.

That's my thoughts too. I mean people can try and be rational about why it would be a bad thing but I love the romance in football and a legend of the game coming to play for Southampton no matter how old he is would be utterly brilliant.

Posted

I remember when Bolton got an old Djorkaef and thought he could never cut the mustard....he was brilliant for them...just oozed class

Del Piero would be on a different universe compared to him

Posted

Bring it on.

I can remember the way past it legend that was Frank Worthington and his 1 year stint at the club in 83-84.

He used to stand in the center circle, flick balls up and catch them on the back of his neck for a bit of pre match entertainment.

Quality stuff.

They may have been the most successful sides our club has ever been but these are players who despite being excellent for us were past their peak. Equally some utter cloggers have been brought into the club in order to provide experience, Speedie, Dixon, Ripley etc.

I would rather leave this type of transfer policy to the likes of QPR. Again though, I can understand why it would be exciting, it would certainly be interesting to see if he can cut it in the premier league, even if it is at the age of 37.

I'm sorry....compareing speedie and dixon to a living legend of world football and an amazing pro is just daft

if we signed giggs or scholes, it would also be amazing and a massive addition to the club.....why not this fella for just one season

At last, the club have finally released pictures of this season's elusive third kit.

Expect The9 to pop along any time soon and tell us all the last time we wore black mid-length socks.

Exactly, I'm surprised Colin came out with that, its a bit of a naive statement.

Jaidi was a fantastic signing for Saints, absolutely brilliant for what we needed at the time. And finished his career with us. I can't believe there were people saying "ooh, Jaidi? Too old. no thanks" when we got him. Maybe there were.

Just trying to bring perspective to this type of philosophy, it would be a dramatic change to how we have operated recently.

For just one season, if it made a difference and kept us up? Yes, great. The precident is however extremely dangerous, we do not want to gain a reputation as a retirement home for stars past their peak.

I don't think that would happen....

I didn't put my point across particularly well, you're right.
