Alessandro Del Piero

If he was somehow convinced to join us for a season it would be like when Keegan arrived.

Can you imagine him in our EPL team and what he could teach them about being a class act? And what it would do for our profile? Players like Lambert, Sharp, Guly, Lallana, De Ridder, Tadanari Lee even Barnard would learn so much. If we then had Jrod joining he would be learning from one of THE legends of world football.

Obviously a pipe dream but he is going to be playing somewhere next year and has not ruled anything out apart from its not Italy.

I'm allowed to think things like this because I can. :-)

He was my hero back when he was always the star of the show on football Italia way back on channel 5 in the 90s. I'd have him here in a heartbeat. It'd increase our profile hugely and with Cortese's Italian connections you never know I guess...

When Keegan joined Saints he was the current European footballer of the year.

Del Piero is 37 years old (38 in November) and although he was a superb player, he is very much on the decline.

As MLG said - if we signed Messi - THAT would be like the Keegan signing

Although in '83, we were the Arsenal of the day. So really it'd be like Arsenal signing Messi, which sounds less silly.

He joined in 1980 and left in 1982. Saints were only promoted to the top flight in 1978 (a mere two years before Keegan joined) and the 2nd place finish in 1983/84 came after Keegan left. Keegan was 29/30 when he signed and close to his peak, Messi at 24 years old probably isn't at his peak yet (a scary thought).

It was on Channel 4 was it not? Presented by the best sports presenter around, James Richardson.

I reckon this signing (if it happens) would have other reasons behind it as well.

As you see with Jaidi, he's now doing some sort of ambassadorial role for us in Africa.

Now, what better player to have working for you in a scouting/ID/ambassadorial role than Del Piero?

Get a year out of him in a Connolly role, then he drops back behind the scenes ala Jaidi - but he would attract so many contacts, just by his name.
