Anyone ever heard of this?

Came across it this week whilst trawling through Wiki, and has definitely piqued my interest. Very big in the "Leave No Trace" camping movement, apparently.

So what is it? Instead of putting a tent on the ground, you whack a hammock between two trees and bung a tarp over it. Opens up a ton of new camping spots that wouldn't be feasible otherwise. Just read an Amazon review of one of the commercial hammocks - bloke pitched his hammock over a stream!

As you are sleeping off the ground, you get a better night's kip and are less likely to be accosted by crawling beasties.

Anyone ever done it?

Aye, those are the beasties. Looks ace.

Does indeed look a lot of fun. No idea how much the tents are though, not cheap I imagine due to the strength required to hold the tension.

I was having a look on Amazon. Hennessey, a company leading the way in hammock tents, charge around £140 for one with bells and whistles.

My chief concern is getting into the thing! I am not a giant redwood of a man.

Couple of my mates have been using these for a number of years, I wouldn't really describe them as "fun" as you are normally asleep inside of them, but they are very practical (hardly and size or weight to them) and offer a good alternative to a tent.

Yeah, I'm with you on the hammock tent itself.

The "fun" comment relates to the overall experience - being able to pretty much camp anywhere with trees, and not having to get back to a camp-site.

Do your mates have any good recommendations in terms of places to go?
