Some ****** called Angry_Chairboy has claimed Lallana's girlfriend cheated on him last year.

Angry_Chairboy: @adlallana1 Did you know that your girlfriend (Emily) Cheated on you last year on holiday?

And then...

@billysharp10 Adam Lallana's girlfriend is a cheat. Why can't he accept this fact? Pathetic.

Always 1 has to ruin it for others.

Private lives just cannot remain private anymore.

Such a shame that one agenda driven prat has ruined it. Even playing devils advocate and giving any benefit of doubt to this guy making allegations, there is only one victim. Adam Lallana.

Twitter & facebook is full of Morons, I really can`t see the point in either.

yeah down with the internet it will never catch on.

Twitter is superb for giving accessibility into what the players are like and out does all the press hacks putting their slant on stories. Really sensed the Saints lads aon Twitter are a decent bunch and good feeling a round the club. Would never get that from the Echo

Why would he close his account even if it was true, can only think he's getting a lot of abusive DM's or it's ruling his life.........just like mine sometimes aaaahhhhhhh!

You cant DM unless you follow the person so cant get private abuse

Don't blame him for closing it to be honest. If I were in a position that could open me up as a target for vile and nonsense crap I wouldn't want to read it either.

Don't know why so many famous or high profile people bother with Twitter anyway for some of the grief it seems to cause them. If they didn't use it in the first instance maybe they wouldn't be so bothered as they wouldn't receive so much such direct abuse.

Out of all social network applications. Twitter seems the worst for causing problems for the rich and famous.

Here's an idea... Don't use it.

Protected account created aug 2011 his closed account october 2011. Not him unless he started out with this protected account. Either way its a shame someone has spoilt it for everyone else

This sort of stuff seems to be happening more and more, Billy Sharp always seems to be getting loads of abuse over his child as well.

@Joe_Lea97 is another who has been mouthing off, and this kid at least claims to be a member of the Saints academy...

That shouldn't be the only option though. The camaraderie and banter between our lads on there has been fantastic this season and very entertaining. It's also a great way for the players to be able to interact with fans e.g. Jos' squarehead and Cork's boots competitions.

Very sad that a small number of people can ruin it for thousands of others.

I quite agree that it's good to see all the positive and fun side of social networking and is a shame a few can ruin for others, but as a high profile personality on Twitter and especially as a footballer it's obvious you will get abuse too from rival teams supporters.

We've seen many a tweet from the team that has brought a smile to the followers that have posted them here but there's also a darker side that often have an opposite reaction too.

Out of all the social networks Twitter does seem to headline the news when ever someone in the public eye makes a comment that anyone on Twitter can jump on. For that reason it's probably better that football players don't use it and concentrate on what happens with the team and on the pitch.

Glad to see Lallana has dropped his Twitter account if it's causing him a problem. Maybe sad for his followers but sure he can do without the issues it appears to have brought him.

Can't imagine there's a footballer on there that doesn't get a barrage of abuse. Sadly twitter has a huge number of w@nkers, and they tend to be attention seekers too. Tough to avoid and I wouldn't bother with it if I was a footballer.

I commented to my lad that the abuse Robbie Savage gets on Twitter is libellous and if he was so minded he should refer it to the Police. To be fair to Robbie, he just rises above it. Sadly some people have a few drinks inside them and think they can hurl abuse over the ethernet.

Oh please.

Adam Lallana has a zillion more followers than me, and I get death threats and abuse regularly.

Don't be so precious.

Or, in the alternative, ask the Saints Comms team how they advise you operate this. Jordan Sibley is - after all - widely considered to be a genius in PR sports management.

he presumably sees more cost than benefit - could be the sort of thing he reads, or the time it takes out of living in the real world?

I imagine (cos I dont tweet) that most tweet traffic is either an extreme of adulation or abuse?

I can't for the life of me understand why anyone has a twitter account, unless they are in the media and need the publicity. Why on earth expose yourself to all that crap, just so people you have never met can be told what you had for tea? Weird.

I would have thought Lallana would just ignore tweets from insignificant idiots. Let's face it - he has ignored all mine! :D

That aside (and sorry - I haven't read the entire thread) I would have thought it would take more than a few abusive tweets to make him close the account. Footballers (indeed, anyone using twitter) surely uses the service in the full knowledge that this sort of thing would happen all the time. Look at the sh!t Billy Sharp got.

Like most forms of social media it is what you make of it. Twitter's actually better than most though as it works on an opt-in basis. You follow the content that interests you and are only ever a couple of clicks away from unfollowing or blocking anybody that pees you off with inane drivel.

As for why Adam decided to close his account... Well we don't know the ins and outs of it, do we? I believe he's now engaged, wouldn't be all that surprising if it touched a nerve. Perhaps his partner's cheated in the past, perhaps the allegated events recently came to light between them and he's very raw about it etc. etc. All ifs and maybes, his business.

For me it comes down to that guy being an utter moron. If this truly was a selfless act (as he claims) you wouldn't pick a public medium to air it. Nasty attention-seeking little boy.

Oh, I understand why people follow others on twitter. What I don't get is why tweet, unless you need publicity? Lots of people seem to spend half their lives protecting themselves from identity theft, changing passwords , checking for viruses, fussing about data protection, etc --- and the other half telling complete strangers details of their personal life.

The annoying thing about Twitter is it only takes one **** to ruin it for you.

I have a business, and used to use Twitter to help promote it. Then my bitter ex girlfriend found my account, and kept on making false accusations about me and my business with @ replies to every Tweet I wrote. Now of course I was able to block her so that I couldn't see the tweets, but anyone doing a search on my company name would find those negative comments, they were even appearing in the Google search results.

At least in Facebook you can block the person and that's that, they have no audience. Twitter gives an audience to any ****ing idiot.

I don't really know anybody that uses it like that. Personally I mainly use it to converse and share news/thoughts (it's particularly easy to dip in and out of to keep abreast of current affairs). There's a lot of different informal roles that people play on Twitter - specialists/pundits, networkers/socialisers, thought leaders/influencers. Anybody that's using it to post "just had sum toast lolz" is using about 0.01% of the platform's potential.

In short it's perfectly possible to have a presence on there without giving your entire persona or life away, which is what footballers would ideally be able to do. You get petulant attention seekers in all walks of life - it's not as if Twitter is more prone to it than you'd encounter in your every-day life.

Former Saint, Bolton's Kevin Davies closed his account last year after his missus and kids were abused by some angry Bolton fans. However he's re-opened it. Anyone, can de-activate their account at any time for whatever reason. Maybe he's going to be away an closed it till he comes back

Being a verified account he has priority assistance from Twitter when he blocks or reports an abuser. He also can delete any abuse, block and report anyone, just as any use is able to do.

It is also possible his accounts been hacked into. This often happens with celebrities. Or maybe one of his mates or fellow players was messing about when he had people round at his place or left his phone/ipad lying about.

I'm certain he'll be back but personally as I posted awhile back I'm not over happy at our players spending so much time on Twitter when there are big matches.

Getting abuse is the risk everyone takes but there are ways to deal with it.

I once saw Shilts totally legless ushered into Taxis at 2am Saturday and then played ablinder the following afternoon so dont have too many concerns about some keyboard tapping. Woudl you rather they were on the Playstation?

Quite interesting how resistant and judgemental to technology changes so many fans appear to be. If you enjoy it use it but so many don't get it so say it is pointless or full of morons as their way of justifying. Why not admit you are to old or thick;-)

This. Honestly, this.

Either that or in order to use twitter, every post should be followed by the twits full legitimate address - so we can go round and fill the stupid fukker in.
