TheSaintPhil Posted 19 May, 2012 Share Posted 19 May, 2012 I reckon a lot of people know this but I will share with you all. If you call SKY to cancel your contract and you will be forward to retentions Tell them to cancel and most of the time you can get the FULL sky package for 50% off for 6 to 12 months. A good saving
Lord Duckhunter Posted 19 May, 2012 Share Posted 19 May, 2012 I reckon a lot of people know this but I will share with you all. If you call SKY to cancel your contract and you will be forward to retentions Tell them to cancel and most of the time you can get the FULL sky package for 50% off for 6 to 12 months. A good saving There were tips on Martin Lewis' money saving site posted by a sky employee. It's certain times of the week and on certain days it is better to call. The retention team have a certain amount of discount to give away each month. the guy posted dont call at the start of their month, as they want to hold some back and dont call at the end, as it might have run out.Tell them how much you love Sky but just can not afford it. I followed his advise, and called saying my Mrs was up the duff and not working. they gave me half price for the period she was on "maternity" leave. I think it was a year, but cant quite remember. Sometimes doesn't work, told a mate and he did the same, they said "fine" and were going to cancel it. He had to call back and say he changed his mind.So it doesn't always work, look up Martin Lewis' advise on when to call.
pressingon Posted 19 May, 2012 Share Posted 19 May, 2012 I also read that they quite often "call your bluff" but if you do go through with the cancellation they often ring within a week or so asking why you cancelled and offering a deal to get you back. Ohio Saint Posted 19 May, 2012 Share Posted 19 May, 2012 I also heard that if you cancel, they cut the head off your prize race horse, sneak into your mansion and leave the horse's head in your bed. If you don't have a horse, they just **** your missus.
Chez Posted 19 May, 2012 Share Posted 19 May, 2012 if you don't have the option of fast broadband or cable they are more likely to call your bluff.
dune Posted 19 May, 2012 Share Posted 19 May, 2012 When mine runs out next summer i'll just say I support one of the relegated clubs and don't want it anymore. If they call my bluff i'll just say fine and wait for the inevitable phone call. it'll be the close season anyway.
mcjwills Posted 19 May, 2012 Share Posted 19 May, 2012 Today as I have sports and not films, I phoned up to say I was going to cancel the sport and have the films (it costs less) as I could not afford both, she then said if I keep the sports she would give me films free for a year. A bit of a result and a saving of £240.00. You get nothing if you do not try with Sky.
Colbury Posted 19 May, 2012 Share Posted 19 May, 2012 F*ck Sky. I have virgin media. Better deal, cheaper and MUCH better broadband.
scotty Posted 19 May, 2012 Share Posted 19 May, 2012 F*ck Sky. I have virgin media. Better deal, cheaper and MUCH better broadband. I dont bother with either, tbh. If theres anything I want to watch on sky sports theres usually a stream for it.
dune Posted 19 May, 2012 Share Posted 19 May, 2012 F*ck Sky. I have virgin media. Better deal, cheaper and MUCH better broadband. Agreed, but if you can't get cable there's no choice. Wouldn't change broadband from BT though anyway.
SNSUN Posted 19 May, 2012 Share Posted 19 May, 2012 F*ck Sky. I have virgin media. Better deal, cheaper and MUCH better broadband. I have the Sky broadband/tv/phone package and I can't fault the broadband so far. Lightning quick. The only time it didn't work (ironically) is when we very first got it and plugged it in - Sky broadband was down for a few hours - but a quick look online made me realise that. (We had mobile broadband at the time with 3 which was very unpredicatable.) We'd definitely consider trying to abuse Sky for a discount though! I'm always on the hunt for a discount - I never buy anything online without looking for a discount code first. They're easy enough to find and sometimes they give you a good discount too. Brizzie Saints Posted 19 May, 2012 Share Posted 19 May, 2012 Works in Oz too with Foxtel/Austar. I gave them the usual hard luck story and got 50% off entire package for 6 months with no contract, cancel anytime. Saved $
terrypward Posted 27 May, 2012 Share Posted 27 May, 2012 Just want to add to this thread. I called three weeks ago as my missus fell foul of the British Gas cull. Now have 12 months with entertainment, HD and Sports for £32 per month, with no minimum term contract. Will use that no minimum term contract to argue that they should let me have ESPN for free once the televised fixtures come out. Well worth chancing your arm. I didn't even need to threaten Virgin or BTvision for the offer. Wish I had done it earlier as paid full whack for 4 years...

dune Posted 27 May, 2012 Share Posted 27 May, 2012 They are coming to fit my sky tomorrow (still not received the viewing card though ). I've gone for the sports pack without HD. Wish i'd gone for HD now. Do you think they'll let me have the HD at a discount if I ask?
COMEONYOUREDS Posted 27 May, 2012 Share Posted 27 May, 2012 If your outside your contract, jack in sky, buy a Linux based sat receiver such as openbox or dreambox, and then find either a free or paid server to access the encrypted channels.. much better than getting ripped off by sky. Currenlty enjoying the full sky package for 12.99 a month

COMEONYOUREDS Posted 27 May, 2012 Share Posted 27 May, 2012 (edited) How do you do that? Google openbox s10, buy one Plug it in to your modem with an ethernet cable Get a 'c-line' from a website such as http://www.c-linie.com Accessing the encrypted channels relies on the internet connection being good at both ends, but I have used the above server for a couple of months and it has been very good. There are free servers around but usually over subscribed The EPG doesn't work properly so buy a radio times Enjoy :-D Edited 27 May, 2012 by COMEONYOUREDS

terrypward Posted 27 May, 2012 Share Posted 27 May, 2012 It's well worth a go. Saw it as a game of chicken. Worst case was I would call and ask to stay, but with BT Visison offering sky sports 1+2 plus ESPN for £30ish... as a new premiership fan, thought it a powerful bargaining tool. Hatch Posted 27 May, 2012 Share Posted 27 May, 2012 did this a couple of years ago, got sky sports for 1p for 9 months. Currently on 50% of movie package when i rang up to 'cancel' a few months ago.
Professor Posted 28 May, 2012 Share Posted 28 May, 2012 Why bother with Sky at all? There's plenty of free TV and other things to do if you don't want to watch TV. If people refused to pay the exorbitant prices to watch sport on Sky, they'd have to close down and sport would go back to BBC and ITV.
Turkish Posted 28 May, 2012 Share Posted 28 May, 2012 I will be cancelling my sky shortly. Had an ongoing problem with sky plus, it should be able to record two Channels at the same time or one and be able to watch other channels. As it is, for some reason it will only record one channel at a time and your have to watch that channel for it to work which defeats the object of having it. I've rang several times to have this fixed and nothing has worked. I called up again last week to try to get it sorted for about the 5th time and they said the box was now out of warranty by 3 days and I'd have to pay a £65 call out charge or take out a support contract. hoozonside10 Posted 28 May, 2012 Share Posted 28 May, 2012 I rang to cancel sky sports and they gave me sky movies for 12 months free (I didn't have movies at the time) if I kept sports. Fine by me as I would only have been without sports for about 6 weeks before starting it again, Saints on football first each week, can't wait! Got 20% off my full HD package for the next 9 months, no contracts... Recon I could of done better so will be calling them again in a few weeks to advise their generosity hasn't resolved my financial predicament, hopefully they'll give a little more.. All in all this didn't work out so well.. Few days later I received a letter from Sky welcoming to their new 12 month contract, fuming.. Least I had all the ammunition required then to callback and vent my frustration as advisor told me on the phone no contracts advised. After a little rant and suggestion they go back through their recorded calls to confirm I threatened to cancel the lot because I was even more disappointed by their cust service and being lied to as I was by their original price. They put me through to cancellations who told me what a valued customer iwas, apologised and then proceeded to cancel the lot.... Bye bye Sky on 01/07 for me then....
