New Goalkeeper

Mate, you are clutching at straws. Firstly, the ball from Taylor is sublime - Gilks would have been in two minds as to wether Evatt was going to make it and nod it back towards him, or if it would be coming over the top. THEN, having watched it come over the top, he is in two minds again - If Cole takes a touch I need to close it down BUT if he then hits it first time I am committed and in nomansland.

He could have done nothing more than what he done - make himself as big as possible and hope for the best. It was a very good goal.

He stood on his goal-line and was easily beaten. Bad goalkeeping.

I've been saying we should go after Smithies for some time now. Really do rate him. However he has been injured this season according to my Udders supporting in-laws. He is rated up there. If Udders don't go up next week then I reckon he would worth a bid (And Rhodes as well while we're at it)

Chatted to a few Udders when we played up there about him, they reckon they turned down a rather substancial bid from Everton (around £3m mark IIRC).

I had heard that, but that was before he got injured. He's not currently first choice as his replacement came in and had a blinder. Reckon we could get him for less than that especially if they don't go up.

Lol. You really are not worth entering a discussion with on the subject - clearly.

Long and short of it is he didn't save it and was stood on his line, which pretty much goes against every bit of goalkeeping coaching I've ever heard.

Of course it's only one incident, but it's not me saying he's amazing.

As someone that's never played semi professional football; other than charging out and clattering into his own defender I can't see there was much else he could have done, it was a great cross, great bit of movement and a decent finish. Surely going by what you say Rob Green was fault for the second as in very similar circumstances he too stayed on his line and gave Ince the whole goal to aim at.

If he had come for it, Cole would have had an even easier goal than he scored anyway, and you would be saying Gilks is even sh*tter because he came for a ball and got caught nowhere.

Stuart, that really would have been the rod that finally broke Portsmouths back, having to rely on us to keep going till the end of the season.

As an aside I sent you a pm in 2010 about Gregg Schoool ,I went there in 1967 only, any way you replied and believe it or not I only by luck found your reply to that today.

I saw a guy who was there from 1967 -1972 at twenty twenty finals day last August [ I

Agreed. Was explaining that to my mate in the pub while we were watching the game, but he said that Gilks had no chance and all he could do was try and stop the shot by maintaining his position. Gilks had plenty of time to watch Cole take that touch which took it slightly wider than he would have liked, imo that was the perfect opportunity to take 2 or 3 steps off his line to close down the player thus making the target much, much smaller as the shot was taken from an angle anyway.

Watch the replay again. Then try and take take 2 or 3 steps in under one second whilst trying to process or your rational risk assessments I stated above. The ball from Taylor caused all sorts of problems for the defender as much as Gilks. I'm not saying Gilks was well positioned, because he wasn't. But in that instance there is nothing more he could have done.

And if he proves he's better than KD then he can have it.

Yeah sure. But I was replying to peacey saying we could sign him as back up. I'm not sure he would sign for us with the understanding he would be our back up keeper and that he would have to wait for his chance. I would of thought a keeper of his ability would now be looking for regular first team football.

IF KELVIN IS DEPRIVED OF HIS TOP FLIGHT CHANCE?!?!

IF!??!

This shouldn't even be on our minds. That man had the chance of the top flight when we were going under but turned it down because he wanted to have a crack at it with us. He's been our most consistent player for 5 years. I don't care who we get in, we could get in the best goalkeeper in the world for all I care (and because I don't particularly follow the foreign game, I don't really know who that is) Kelvin would STILL be our number one. He deserves this more than any other player from any of the three sides promoted and we don't even know who one side is yet.

My thoughts exactly - I think there is some loyalty to be repaid here.

We need a long-term replacement for Kelvin either this season or next - players like Gordon and Carson are not it.

Someone with potential, good distribution and who is a decent shot stopper. Shouldn't be too hard to find...

Jason f'ING STEELE!!!! Young, English, and a beast to boot! Dominates with control of the area and is a great shot stopper. Why ahve we not been linked to him? Because I'm damn sure we will be looking at him this summer!

He will be young, probably early 20s, with plenty of potential, ready to start pushing KD from day one, but bought with the plan to be a natural replacement one, probably before KD has stopped playing. Anything else will not meet the clubs ambition. I wouldn't be surprised if he is dutch or at least is playing in Holland. We can forget tried and tested keepers who never quite made it.

Jason Steele?

Got a few mates who support Boro and they all say the same thing. Excellent shot stopper but has no presence in the area. Flaps at corners/crosses and causes more chaos than calm. Some would be happy to see him move on and have someone more consistent in goal.

The one that has just left Villa looks decent, Guzan. Available for nothing as well. Tall, at 27 just coming into his prime. Ideal to compete with KD This season with a view to long term successor. Although worryingly he started his career at South Carolina Game cocks.
