Shane Meadows is the man, and he has worked with, and introduced some great British actors.

If you like sugary, feel-good, rom-com chick flicks with no plot - avoid his work, it will be beyond you. :)

Well worth revisitng the whole This is England collection.

Shane Meadows also responsible for Dead Mans Shoes.

He's currently working on another series of This Is England, set around the Italia 90 world cup and birth of rave culture, a documentary about the Stone Roses and a film about the life of Bartley Gorman, a bare knuckle boxing champion. If its anything like the rest it'll be top drawer.

I seen dat! I was put off a bit at first cos it was set in olden days and i don't really like historical dramas, but then this one kid goes "How many people can you fit in a mini? Three in the back, two in the front and your dad in the ****ing ashtray!" which made me looools!

Also there was this bit where the horrible racists was having a black kid in their gang, and they was all tolerating him for some reason till the black kid tries to get them to come round his nan's house for rice and pea, so they kick the **** out of him! It was pretty terrible! Is dat the sort of thing dat really happened in olden days?

Like I say unrealistic rubbish, but bound to become a cult film among students in the same way crap like the clockwork orange is.

It's just my opinion. Before the film came out I expected it'd be good and be a realistic docu-film, but in reality it was just left wing propaganda. But each to his own, I just prefer historical films to be more accurate, not influenced by political correctness and less corny.

To fair in the '88 series Lol has a kid by Milky after having an affair with him. A single mother with a mixed race child and loose morals suggest he got his portrayal of council estate women spot on.

Very enjoyable film, and even liked Gary Stretch in his role as the leader of the gang.

As someone who was growing up at the time the film is set i have to say it was spot on regarding politics/culture/unemployement and racism at the time. Then again i'm not a racist like you Stanley.

But you make up for that by being an accomplished bore.

Filmed in Nottingham, meant to be Sheffield. As I understand it anyway.

It's by the sea though so it can't be Sheffield, or Nottingham as I've seen suggested elsewhere.

I always assumed that it was never meant to be set in one particular real place. As the title says, 'This Is England', and so the town in the film is representative of all the parts of country that had a particularly hard time economically in the early Eighties, i.e. everywhere except the South. The fact that it was filmed in several different places, and that the characters have a range of Midlands and Northern accents seems to support this.

But that's only my theory. I'm happy to be proven wrong but I don't think Shane Meadows has ever definitively said where it's set.

Dead Mans Shoes - Great film indeed Turkish, there was some brilliant acting in that, combined with a brilliant storyline and script.

I thought it was sh/te. Stupid unrealistic storyline. No doubt it'll gain cult status in a few years among the super mikeys of this world.

And why does a kid who looks 9 or 10 have a girlfriend of like...16 or something? Very strange.

Why don't people do their own research??

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0480025/locations

It's not difficult to find: http://lmgtfy.com/?q=this+is+england+filming+locations+imdb

Thanks Mr.Bateman , great answer. BUT the question was where is the film meant to be set , NOT where was it filmed!

Seams to be "any ****ty town" on the Yorkshire coast , which is not Sheffield.

Combos appearance on the scene was very typical of the time. Thatchers England was effing bleak!
