sydneysaint Posted 19 May, 2012 Share Posted 19 May, 2012 I have forgotten the opponents, but from there going back to the early 60s there was a chant which even players would try to get going if the going was tough. The chant was simple but brought unison between those on and off the field and I wonder if it is still in use it was SO..UTH....AMPT..ON (... denote pauses for those that may be puzzled). Pugwash Posted 19 May, 2012 Share Posted 19 May, 2012 There were two I think. One was SOU-THAMP-TON (quick monotone, emphasis on the middle syllable), followed by three quick claps, then repeated. Second was more drawn out, on three descending notes (no particular emphasis), followed by five quick claps, then repeated. And now you're gonna try these out, aren't you? Not quite sure whether you are denoting spelling out the name. If so wan't it preceded by "2-4-6-8 Who do we appreciate"? Was a very common chant in the 60s and effective, but does seem a little dated now, and also fails to mention Pompey so is not considered appropriate any more :-)

It went something like "2-4-6-8, who do we appreciate? Essoh yew-tee-aitch, ayempeetee, owen!"

I do however remember that chant, but belongs in an era of the bobble hat and wooden rattle (now in the roofspace).
dronskisaint Posted 19 May, 2012 Share Posted 19 May, 2012 Wasn't it the 'England' handclap that happily fitted the number of letters in SO UTH AMPT ON? That's my recollection of it. 1 2 3 4 - Listen to the Milton roar Give it to Me e lia (Troggs song tune) So many more remembered from my Dell youth.
