Donald 'Duck’ Dunn

Died at the weekend.

Was in the greatest house band of them all, Booker T & the MG's. Played on most of Stax's fantastic recordings backing people like Otis, Sam & Dave, Wilson Pickett. I always prefered Stax to the pop of Motown and along with Steve Cropper were the white members of a racially integrated soul group — one of the first of its kind (it was the USA in the 1960's)

RIP

Wow, didn't know that. Why is this not more well publicised? RIP fella, thanks for the basslines.

It must be a time thing, being 40 odd years ago. I'm surprised there wasn't a bit more about it.

He was a major part of the Stax story. And what a story that was, it was at the heart of American music and the story of the '60's

Fantastic....RIP

Soul Limbo by Booker T.

Synonymous with the BBC coverage of Test Matches.

A lot of people dont know that was Booker T & The Mg's.

They were seriously underrated, particulary Steve Cropper. He wrote or part wrote Green Onions, Sitting on the dock of the bay, midnight hour,Knock on wood.

Not forgetting backing the worlds greatest ever soul singer.

Saw Booker T and the MG's (Memphis Gentlemen?) at Leeds Uni back in the early 70's

Very tight band

Duck Dunn was a great bass player but some say not quite as good as James Jamerson of the Funk Bros

Also saw Sam and Dave live.

What a performance but apparently they hated one another!!!

!

The story Stax put out was Memphis Group, but I read an article saying it was because a friend owned an MG.

According to that article, Stax put out the story Memphis Group in case of any trademark infringement claims by the car Company.

It is really a matter of opinion. I'm more Motown than Stax/Atlantic so I prefer the Hook to the Duck.

As an aside, Steve Cropper actually gets a shout from Sam & Dave on their Soul Man recording!

Did anyone see Steve Cropper on the Ronnie Wood show the other night (great show most weeks). He also told the story of "hold on I'm coming". Issack Hayes and David Porter had the rift but no words. Porter went for a **** and Hayes thought he was taking too long, when he shouted "hurry up", the reply was "hold on, I'm coming", and the song had the words..........

Sad news of impending bad news.

From Mike D. Bryant - Motown Treasures

Courtesy of Patricia A. Washington from Motown Classics :

Funk Brothers bassist Bob Babbitt in a Detroit hospital - suffering from inoperable brain tumour. :( More details to come, but if you can, go to M.C. for further news & pray for him & his family, as I know you shall....

Aidrian Fischer (again Motown Treasures) reports:

From Ralph Terrana on the Soulful Detroit Forum "I just spoke with George McGregor who told me he just talked with Eddy Willis, one of Babbitt's fellow Funks, who gave him an update on Babbitt. It isn't good news. He was told Babbitt has about thirty days to live. Please say a prayer for this remarkable guy. I hope he proves the doctors wrong."
