dune Posted 16 May, 2012 Posted 16 May, 2012 I've been charged with purchasing one for bloke who's retiring which me a few others will be chipping in for. There will be a collection as well, but we want to get him something just from us. I'm thinking gold plated rotary, but have seen this http://www.comtechlogic.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=387 , i like it and it's rrp is around 350, so a bargain, but is it too blingy? Any suggestions?
pap Posted 16 May, 2012 Posted 16 May, 2012 Sure, send me the £100 and I'll happily recommend a good watch. What's your price range?
Chez Posted 16 May, 2012 Posted 16 May, 2012 obviously its a matter of taste, but Mondaine watches are very simple and refined. Something like this perhaps http://www.johnlewis.com/89232/Product.aspx

Saint-scooby Posted 16 May, 2012 Posted 16 May, 2012 Does he want a watch, maybe you should ask him what he really wants ?
Trader Posted 16 May, 2012 Posted 16 May, 2012 Seiko make really good quality watches - plenty of bargains on ebay such as: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Seiko-Mens-Kinetic-Watch-SKA490-RRP-225-Our-Price-99-/261024035119?pt=UK_Jewelery_Watches_Watches_MensWatches_GL&hash=item3cc63eb12f

Classic look for a 65 year old.
LVSaint Posted 16 May, 2012 Posted 16 May, 2012 What about Skagen? Classy but maybe a little less traditional.
egg Posted 16 May, 2012 Posted 16 May, 2012 Was going to say skagen, great watches but not traditional. Tissot are fine watches, a poor mans omega. Watch hut have loads of bargains.

Watch hut is a great site, reckon i've found it.. http://www.thewatchhut.co.uk/Rotary-Gents-Bracelet-Watch-GB02509+46.html Not blingy, just classy.

Too distinctive. Might well be to your taste, but others might hate it. I think you really need to stick with a more classic round style no frills watch.
buctootim Posted 16 May, 2012 Posted 16 May, 2012 Go for something like this - new old stock from the 1960s. Good make from a period he will no doubt appreciate if he's 65. Classy period design too. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NOS-NEW-SPECIAL-RECORD-LONGINES-SWISS-MADE-WATCH-1960S-/110875043580?pt=Wris****ches&hash=item19d0aae6fc

buctootim Posted 16 May, 2012 Posted 16 May, 2012 I don't like it all tbh. Fair enough. Some other good watches on that site imo though.
dubai_phil Posted 16 May, 2012 Posted 16 May, 2012 Keep it simple & classic Dune. Taste is as diverse as opinions on here. One man's Rolex Oyster with Diamonds is vomit inducing for others. A retiree may not need a Dive watch stylee for example I got given a classic round gold plated Rotary with plated bracelet - simple face with a date window - when I left an employer many years ago, it is not an "everyday watch" but I still wear it out for "dressing up posh" evenings 5 or 6 times a year some 16 years on, reminds me still of the friends I made way back then

egg Posted 16 May, 2012 Posted 16 May, 2012 That's the sort of thing i'm after, although would prefer an oblong face. Why the oblong face? Round is the classic shape. Loads on watchhut in the 100 to 150 range under the classic section.
SO16_Saint Posted 16 May, 2012 Posted 16 May, 2012 You can have my watch for £100. Sod it, you can have it for fifty
dune Posted 16 May, 2012 Author Posted 16 May, 2012 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rotary-GB02402-03-Mens-Windsor-Gold-Plated-219-/220991968866?pt=UK_Jewelery_Watches_Watches_MensWatches_GL&hash=item337425d662 Just need to find it cheaper.
dubai_phil Posted 16 May, 2012 Posted 16 May, 2012 Of course, paypal me 100 quid I'll get down to the dodgy fake watch shop in Karama, for that you can take your pick of current Breitling, Rolex, Tag, Omega. He'd never know the difference. (Of course he'd die of Nickel poisoning within 5 years but then hey House lives in the East Coast - no brainer). Should be able to get it to Stansted around 6th June
buctootim Posted 16 May, 2012 Posted 16 May, 2012 Not suggesting it for your workmate, but this is really cool for £10! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Nice-Xmas-Gift-Blue-Binary-LED-Light-Dot-Matrix-Mens-Watch-/200656985288?_trksid=p4340.m1374&_trkparms=algo%3DPI.WATCH%26its%3DC%252BS%26itu%3DUCC%26otn%3D15%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D8464817420515000558

Chez Posted 17 May, 2012 Posted 17 May, 2012 Not really appropriate, was thinking more traditional/classy. my managing director, who is 65, has one, that's why I thought it might be a good match. I have to say that the gold numbers you suggest look cheap and nasty. You know your man I guess, but blimey get to a shop and look at them in the flesh before you buy off the web.
Pancake Posted 17 May, 2012 Posted 17 May, 2012 Gold? Classic style? Bosh! http://www.thewatchhut.co.uk/-Seiko-Gents-Bracelet-Watch-SGEE46P1.html "Offer6" for 6% off. BANG!
Dog Posted 18 May, 2012 Posted 18 May, 2012 Hey Dune, take a look at this site: http://www.watchwarehouse.co.uk/watches/gen:gents/ Big discounts until end of May
jawillwill Posted 18 May, 2012 Posted 18 May, 2012 This is a great watch. I highly reccommend it. http://www.play.com/DVD/DVD/4-/23925302/Buffy-The-Vampire-Slayer-Season-1-7-Box-Set/Product.html?_%24ja=tsid:11518%7Ccat:23925302%7Cprd:23925302
