Liverpool Approach Adkins

The club are going to have issue a rebuttal soon, the silence is very worrying imo.

Don't think there is any need to issue a rebuttal. So far, the only "evidence" I've seen are yours and CB Fry's accounts, plus a few Saints fans on Twitter saying "Hands off Nigel Adkins!" :)

Not saying that you were wrong to post what you heard, btw. Just saying that no-one out there seems to be taking it remotely seriously.

Please don't expose the holes of the OP's post pap

Can you explain how I do that and still post? :D

FWIW, I don't actually think this is as bonkers as some are making out. However, the only way I could see it happening is if Nige was flanked with a big-name supporting team for DoF, etc. They could sell it as "we're rebuilding the bootroom culture", etc.

I do just want to clear this one up. IF Liverpool offered Adkins the job, he would be gone like a shot!

They will not even interview him, so not that likely.....

...... We also will NOT sign Owen!

Someone posted an interview on here some months back. Wasn't Nigel's usual style of interview - they hit him with some left-field questions, and the subject of the Liverpool job came up ( admittedly in the context of wishful thinking ). Pretty clear from his responses that LFC is his dream job.

The one thing to remember in all of this is that FSG are now taking their cues from David Dein, erstwhile of Arsenal and employed at LFC as a consultant. To me, that screams "long term project".

You've heard this rumour too then...

Oh yes, and I have already visited a few Costa coffee's in the area to see if he is there. The rumour is he is going on holiday, but really the only flight he will be on is to Southampton!

Has Nige been spotted out and about in public this week?

In fact, where does he live? Does he still have a family home oop north?

Someone tweeted a picture of them with Adkins to that fake Nigel Adkins Twitter account yesterday. They were at an airport.

He could've been flying to America to enter discussions with Liverpool's owners?

It's the weight given to the rumour by its association with CB Fry that worries me. He's never wrong. And how very dare you suggest that anything he says is not taken seriously!

For my benefit, can you let me know whether you're being sarcastic about CB Fry's comment?

I have to say, I'm not quite as good at remembering people's track records.

All this to one side Liverppol fans will only settle for a big name. Adkins will never land the Liverpool job. He will be lucky to get any better than he has at the moment. IF he does well next season, and lands mid table with us, 'big clubs' will not come in for him as they aim for the 'big' names. Adkins falls into the same bracket bracket as Brendan Rogers, And Paul lambert. Liverpool will not come in for these either. Adkins is not even a proven premier league manager. So all this is a little premature, and let's throw it out there hypothetically, and say Liverpool took him on, the fans would be on his back right from the start, and it would be a massive gamble that the board just would not take.

It's good analysis, Kev. Based on recent information, I'd say that you're almost certainly right. Historically though, can you think of another big club that has given as many chances to people with no top-flight experience?

Maybe all clubs need to issue a rebuttal, as there seems to be silence from them all, very very worrying!

I've already phoned the Liverpool Echo and ruled myself out of contention. Probably too late for that news to hit the midday edition.

the uncertainty of the managers position would explain the complete lack of transfer activity though.

tbh, there is uncertainty at the club full stop.

A nice big press conference with a clear statement from the Liebherr family would scotch a ton of rumours in one fell swoop.

Everyone knows that Cortese identifies and signs the players that he wants.

aaah, now thinking outside the box, That Comolli fella left Liverpool as well, maybe we are missing the fact it could be a double swoop.

Both Mr Cortese and Mr Adkins both going to Liverpool.

Worrying indeed.

The scary thing is our Echo hasn't run a front page banner headline screaming "Ädkins to Liverpool?"

Looks like NC has put his foot down and stopped them from going into print.

What other reason could there possibly be for The Echo not to run with such a non story?

Maybe they are still trying to fathom out why Ricky Lambert is in the running for the Villa job!!

Bob Paisley??

Joe Fagan??

I don't think for one second Adkins would be offered the job or seriously considered this time round, but he absolutely will be on their radar. Martinez is one of the favorites, but only ever worked with smaller clubs (Albeit in the Prem)

He fits the old anfield boot room culture perfectly, that was so incredibly successful. If this was in six months time and Saints were in the top ten, it might not sound as quite as silly.

Man u sir Alex not really a gamble at the time as football had changed so much

Man City - went for big names as soon as they knew they were big in money terms and now on the pitch.

Arsenal - Arsene Wenger well not a gamble all those years ago and a good choice after what they just had!

Chelsea - always gone for big names since they have been big, but Di Matteo could be seen as a gamble, but I do not think he will get it.

Liverpool - always had big names at the club to go with 'tradition'

Newcastle is really the one that stands out. A league 1 manager being taken on and doing excellent after we all know being at Southampton.

Everton moyles, but again this was a while back now.

You will find a trend at these clubs that they bring in the big names, or employ within, in the case of Roy Evans, shearer, Zola, with the latter being big names at their clubs. but Liverpool may look at how well pardew has done, but I doubt it.

I think all the top clubs could be getting it wrong with big names, but the need for instint success more by the fickle fans than anyone, this will be the route they take.

If they do gamble it will be the Martintez, Lamberts, Rogers, and even Brian McDermott that would get a look in first above our man.

I'm torn between the idea that Liverpool fans still have a clue about football (like they seemed to in the 1980s, I distinctly remember them applauding other teams' performances at Anfield for instance) and the idea that they're all JCL insta-results manager-firing stroppy teenage plastic Prem idiot-types. The people interviewed on SSN yesterday ALL, without fail, said that Dalglish should have had longer.

That doesn't help, as I now can't decide if they're deluded about their chances of success because it's King Kev... er, I mean Kenny, or they're realistic and genuinely glad because they actually won a trophy for the first time in 6 years and also got to the FA Cup Final.

Don't think NA would leave for Liverpool. He used to support them, and still has a soft spot for them but is a Saints fan now.

They have good history but havent done anything for ages now. Only Suarez would get into our team...maybe Gerrard but he is never fit.

So many good points!

Disagree. The thread ends when:-

a) Nige rules himself out of job in statement (not going to happen, as people will think he's a mentalist if he says that in public)

or

b) Liverpool picks a new manager.

Agree but it's unlikely he'll go there so I should have said its time to stop posting on this thread. I wonder if any liverpool fans have got wind of a saints thread titled 'Liverpool approach Adkins' with 350 odd posts since yesterday.

Completely agree.

And once we have our new stadium, we will undoubtedly have a much bigger crowds than at Anfield.

Either this is a wind up, or you're very stupid. Come to think of it, that's pretty stupid either way. Still, nothing else worth discussing until I get my kit thread up...

Enormous international fanbase (still, despite being only above average to decent for 20 years), significant financial investment, the chance to work with top international players (and some England ones) and a high profile job that could lead to worldwide opportunities. He could also get a significant payrise (though I don't doubt Cortese would match it if needed) AND he's a scouser.

It's only Liverpool maybe wanting a bigger name or someone with proven Prem experience that's stopping an offer coming in - but once he's got a couple of seasons Prem experience (like Martinez or Rodgers) this will come around again and we'll see if he's promising enough or a big enough name for them then.

Agree with this. Only way Adkins would be considered for Liverpool is after a year minimum managing in the prem - showing that he can have an impact at that level.

That is the main reason why this thread is stupid. Them appointing him would be like if we sacked Adkins and replaced him with Paul Tisdale.

After a year or 2 in the premiership we will obviously be playing in the Champions league the new stadium will be well progressed or completely Built (what is happening at Stoneham?) so why would Adkins want to go back up north to an antiquated stadium and a team that has more than likely just escaped relegation.

I'm not sure that FSG are operating off of "received wisdom" like this.

Indications are that they are keen on up and coming managers.
