Adkins still here at end of season?

I don't believe for a second that Alan Nixon (The People) or for that matter Nabil Hussein (BBC) are basing this on anything more than the throwaway comments made by Nigel in the emotional aftermath of the Coventry game. Comments that Nigel has since explained.

Do NC & NA have a strained relationship? Perhaps they do. Expectant boss? Not uncommon, especially at a football club, that doesn't mean though that NC is looking to replace him. Is NC friends with RDM? Perhaps. Doesn't mean he is looking to give him a job though.

AP was not sacked for footballing reasons. That much we know. So this isn't the same situation at all.

I think it is best to not take too much notice of a tiny piece in a football rumours section of a newspaper. NC has got us this far, playing his cards close to his chest, I think we should trust him to carry on doing so!

Do we? I dont recall any statement from SFC or Pardew as to why he was sacked. A lot of speculation but no FACTS.

Dont forget everyone dismissed rumours of a rift wtih Pardew and Cortese as idle chit chat and the people with an agenda and we all know what happened there.

To say that a manager should be kept on for 10 years regardless of how his teams perform over that time would be just as wrong as to say he should be sacked in his first season in the Premier League if the team are not at least mid-table. Two consecutive promotions are obviously to his credit. For Adkins to stay for 10 years would depend on performance over time and so is entirely unpredictable. To hope that he does is another thing though, because that would mean the team were performing well enough for his leaving never to have become an issue. Ironically, if they did extremely well, he might not stay for 10 years because he'd be head-hunted to work elsewhere!

As for the sacking issue - Adkins should survive if the team doesn't do well although it might depend on how badly things went. If we were points off the bottom by the end of November a change of manager would be an option for Cortese but even then the other option would be to give Adkins the money to bring in new players in January. He'd surely have to do very badly to be sacked in his first Prem season but in football you can't rule anything out.

We have a successful squad that is used to winning and we are told there will be one or two quality additions, so whilst it may not be possible to compete week-after-week with the strength in depth of the current top 6 or 7, there's no reason why we cannot be comfortable in mid table by November. There is one thing I would like to see from Adkins though, and that is for him to improve his interview style by avoiding the repetitive lines he has used over the last couple of years.

Playing devils advocate here, what would peoples view be of the chairman should the rumours be true and he sack Adkins?

there would be uproar...people we say they won't go again...the new manager will come in...win a few games and all will be forgotten

of course, adkins would be off like a shot if a bigger club came calling at the other end of the league....works both ways

I hope he stays...but lets not kid ourselves in the "he will be our fergie and here for x amount of years" talk...it won't happen IMO

It depends on what happens afterward, who the replacement is, and other stuff going on at the club.

Nige has been great for the team and seems to have built a solid team spirit in which players like Lambert have thrived. That's not for nothing, and if Cortese did decide to sack Adkins, questions would need to be asked if the contingency plans looked half-hearted.

Dont sometimes people at the top of a business have to make diffcult decisions though? Raneri at Chelsea for example, did a great job and was popular with the fans and players, but wasn't the man to take them onto the next level the owner wanted.

Fair point, but NC has said it himself. AP is someone who is "difficult" to get on with, totally different character to NA. I would be far more surprised to hear NA and NC had fallen out, than I would AP.

yep and they cried when he left.

like newcastle fans did with houghton.

if he did move adkins on..he better have a ready made replacement...simply moving him on and then "search for the right man" would be ridiculous

no matter what happens...Nigel will ALWAYS be adored by saints fans

Maybe NC sees Newcastle as a role model after all Houghton got them promoted as champions then got the boot a few months later...few could argue it work out well for Newcastle. I remember the toon fans being in uproar at the time bet they all love AP now. Sacking a successful/popular manager is a risk but the fans soon forget if it works out ..Sheffield wednesday being another example.

I dunno either.

I mean, those frothing at the mouth for him to be chelsea manager...well, obviously they have a point

but THAT job from now on is completely different to the job he has had to do for the last 3 months or so....

maybe NC is thinking big....Sven, Fabio, Arry, ;)

I dont see how Cortese can sack him. Everything he talks about and wants to do only works if their is loyalty to, and affection for, the club. You cant credibly aim to recruit the best 10 years olds, develop them over 8-10 years into first team players and get them to stay when they have better options if at the first opportunity you ditch the manager who got you back to back promotions. You have to show loyalty to get loyalty.

Exactly. Those players were just desperate to see AVB sacked, they were underperforming ridiculously. It was only in cup competitions he did well as well, their league form didn't get much better. Lets also not forget he hardly set WBA alight which is a better benchmark of how he might do with us.

This is what I was saying yesterday. if this happens, then he cannot blame players for wanting to leave.

Managers do come and managers go, and as has been said, fans live with it, the verdict often depending on how well the replacement does. Losing Pardew was seen as a blow at the time, softened slightly because the start to the season hadn't been quite as good as expected, but then came the 4-0 win at Bristol Rovers just before AP left with no job to go to. There was no Plan B, because we know that other options were in the frame, including Eddie Howe but ultimately all worked well because Pardew's team played well under Adkins. This thread was about whether we expect NA to be here at the end of the season. There appear to be no reasons to believe he will not be so it must be very probable that he will be.

This.

Football fans are naturally a fickle breed.

FWIW, my gut feel is that Adkins will still be here at the start of the season and that we'll be top 10 at Christmas.

But....IF Cortese thinks that a different manager is what is needed to take the club forward then most fans will end up behind that decision, assuming it doesn't go pear shaped of course, with Nigel taking his rightful place in the Saints hall of fame....

Agreed with everything else you wrote but personally I can't believe this still bothers people. It is quite obviously a specific, measured tactic to maintain the positive message and not give too much away. Yes, for some it can be frustrating but ultimately it is all about the football on the pitch, and the results and we should all by now know that he acts that way and says those things for a reason, and that they are part of the overall 'positivity' package that he uses to get results.

I don't think this applies as much to youngsters. Bale et al moved on because more successful teams were after them. That's what players care about.

Well, possibly.

However, the journo hasn't shirked from follow-on questions and there is now more detail in the tweets than there is in the byline in the People.

I dont see what your problem is. Its a talking point and it seems to have some substance. The problem with this place is that if people want to talk about anything which doesn't suggest Cortese is the greatest man who ever lived then they are called negative.

Er no... rumours on whether NC may or may not be considering a new manager is a fair discussion but in theory is NOT a negative about NC - how can it be when it would only be a negative if the decision went pear shaped... and none of us can predict the future.

The OP question/discussion is sound, but posters ...predictably... using it to have a dig at NC, based on rumour and crystal ball gazing is what is negative...

Calm down the Voice of Reason. Who is having a pop at NC? I asked a very simple question. What would peoples view be of NC if he were to sack a popular and successful manager. I dont see anything wrong with that and i cant see anyone having a pop at NC.

It's actually a bit more basic than that.

If you discuss something that isn't in someone's imagined plans for Saints, there's a good chance someone will shoot you down for it.

Turkish claims to have been told similar back at the years start, by a 'source'! The thing with these statements, they only have a value if you name said source, but like this jurno, he fails to do so, therefore, it would be just as easy for me to claim that a 'source' has told me that NA's position is set in stone. Claiming itk status, then failing to back it up with FACT, stinks of mischief making.

See no one every says what this incident ever was. According to Pardew himself

"Obviously there was a breakdown," Pardew told Goals on Sunday. "You have to say the chairman (Nicola Cortese) lost faith in my management and that's all I can assume because there was no other reason.

"I can't give an example of why because he's not allowed to talk about it and nor am I. He's a new chairman and I always felt vulnerable.

"All you can do is do the job to the best of your ability and I was very proud of the team that we built there and the relationship I had with the players, which was very, very strong."

Yeah, because obviously im going to name the person who told me and risk their career just so can give a name to my source to keep you happy. I dont care if you dont believe it or not and i dont care about being ITK on an internet mongboard, if so why didn't i create a new post about this back in February when i was told and all appeared to be wonderful? Had a small conversation with Alan Nixon on Twitter this morning.

Chris ‏@cj_garrett

@reluctantnicko I don't get this Adkins sacked stuff. Why would we sack one of the best young english managers who has just won 2 promotions?

Alan Nixon ‏@reluctantnicko

@cj_garrett I don't get it either. But when u get it from three different areas over recent weeks then u can't ignore it.

Chris ‏@cj_garrett

@reluctantnicko His body language wasn't as Saints fans expected it to be when we won promotion, but he did say he wanted to be here for a long time. I wish we'd sort it out soon so we can build with a new manager if it is to happen though

Alan Nixon ‏@reluctantnicko

@cj_garrett U need to be signing players. That is an 'issue' that first brought this thing to my attention. Next week or two reveals more.

Chris ‏@cj_garrett

@reluctantnicko Could it be Adkins not having the stature to bring in players 'big' enough for Cortese's ambitions?

Alan Nixon ‏@reluctantnicko

@cj_garrett Central point to all this.

Chris ‏@cj_garrett

@reluctantnicko So what kind of players have you heard we are in for? I can't imagine us 'doing a chelsea/man city'.

Alan Nixon ‏@reluctantnicko

@cj_garrett One guy wants sexy. One guy wants sensible.

Chris ‏@cj_garrett

@reluctantnicko What do you mean by that? Adkins wants to build gradually with young talent and Cortese wants to spend big on big names ?

Alan Nixon ‏@reluctantnicko

@cj_garrett I understand Cortese wants to spend a bit and go big-time. Manager looking for smart deals and been round Europe scouting.

Nice to know that what I said when we appointed Adkins is now Cortese's biggest problem with him - basically that we've run out of "good enough" players who've already played for him to sign.

After everything has come to light, I am amazed that Cortese did not sack Pardew far earlier. His restraint in not sacking him was exemplary and in near on every other business he would have been out of the door.

When Cortese went out and spent £M's on players in the January transfer window he made it very clear to Pardew this was based upon moving forward in the league alone, the cups never came into it. To then be told by Pardew in the programme notes the the cups were deliberately targeted has to go down as one of the most stupid comments ever. I can't think of any other industry where that would be allowed to go without a sacking, especially when already spelt out clearly in black and white. After all of that Pardew still got the second chance but managed to screw up again equally badly, he deserved to go, no doubt.

There is more than enough here to say that Cortese bent over backwards to accommodate Pardew, but the bloke had a managerial death wish. The synergy between Adkins and everything Saints is so very clear to see, even to the extent Adkins had his contract extended to 5½ years after just a few months. This could only have been based up what was happening behind the scenes as results gave no indication of this. I still can't believe the depth of vision Cortese had with extending that contract to 5½ years, when it only became evident at the end of the season that Adkins football had surpassed Pardews. I can see the spectre of the DofF raising it's head in the Premier and will need to be handled sensitively for all concerned but I feel Cortese will be more generous towards Adkins than many imagine.

Still 99% sure it's all nonsense. The media have to come up with something and they want chairmen to be the stereotypical extremely harsh interferring generally fcking everything up type. Makes good headlines. Guarantee that even if Cortese is completely behind NA for the long-term, rumours will persist throughout the season and intensify with every defeat. And many of here will buy into it and discuss it for hours, continuing the whole cycle of bullsh1t. If you're in the 'no smoke without fire' camp, then you're a rapist and good luck defending yourself, after all....

Interesting how the media are banging on about Di Matteo too. Abramovich has made poor decisions and not done his image favours alright, but it's wrong to assume he has an easy decision on this one. It seemed to be suggested DM should get the job if they win the CL. So it's fine to get rid if they don't. If 1 penalty went the other way. So unless I'm crazy, they're suggesting the management of a multi-million pound business should come down to 1 kick of a football? Seriously? Any decision on that role should be based on what's best for the future. I'd be worried about ANY caretaker manager, whatever they'd done, it just never seems to work. Of course the players want him, they got their places back after being under threat, but they can't keep going forever. If he's appointed, what happens if he can't recreate the form? Will he get time? He's struggled in the top flight at WBA and wouldn't have been welcomed at Chelsea without being a great former player.

Just seems like most want him to get the job as a reward, which isn't the best way to run things.

Couldn't you say the same about Nigel? he deserves a chance becuase he has had back to back promotions. What if NC agrees with you though and has someone else lined up...

It isn't headlines though is it. It's a small article in a sunday paper, a couple of lines. Do you really think the papers just invented the story so they can sell millions more copies because of what is going on down on the South Coast at Southampton? Believe it or not the 95% of the country doesn't give a toss who is manager of Southampton.

Di Matteo's just won the European Cup and is on a hiding to nothing if he stays, inheriting the same over the hill side which only came 6th in the Prem.

Instead of being the figurehead who replaced the bloke trying to get rid of the senior pros and being a manager who had the loyalty of the senior pros because he gave them one last chance to prove themselves, he'll very quickly become the bloke who realises he is the one who now needs to get rid of the senior pros.

He'll be in the no-win situation of Villas-Boas, except 12 months down the road, and with the massive expectation of being holders of the European Cup, even though they fluked their way to it.

There's every possibility he won't even want the job, how's he going to top that (other than the World Club Championship) ?

Please dont think for one second I am stirring it up here (or looking for attention) as I am a massive Nigel Adkins fan, but I also have it on extremely good authority (I wont be sharing names on here for obvious reasons) that there is tension between Cortese and Adkins!

NC was extremely disappointed that we didn't have the stamina to go on and win The Championship after leading for so long and was furious after the Reading defeat at home, which led to no communication between NC and NA until after the Coventry game! I am not saying he is about to sack NA, but I dont think it would take too much (like a small blip at the start of the season) for changes to be made.

I am a huge fan of NC and love how he has transformed our club, but don't underestimate his ambition, as the above statement is fact.

You would have to be blind to not realise that something was up between NC and NA after we won promotion.

Let's just hope it is resolved.
