Dog Posted 16 May, 2012 Share Posted 16 May, 2012 I've woken up with a deaf ear, my right ear is all muffled and feels like it is blocked. When people talk or I talk it sounds all tinny inside my ear, and I am struggling with hearing things, when i put my finger in my right ear, my left ear goes deaf. I know it's not a build up of wax because I scraped it all out with a biro lid, but my deafness has been with me now for 48 hours and I am worried I may be going mad. Guest Dark Sotonic Mills Posted 16 May, 2012 Share Posted 16 May, 2012 There's every chance that your Biro cap jammed more wax down towards the eardrum. It's a rule of thumb that you should never put anything in your ear smaller than your elbow. (Try Otex drops BTW)

Dog Posted 16 May, 2012 Author Share Posted 16 May, 2012 You may have perforated your ear-drum Yes, that is what I'm thinking, although i haven't biro'd my ear for a couple of weeks, so the deafness came out of the blue.
Ken Tone Posted 16 May, 2012 Share Posted 16 May, 2012 Yes, that is what I'm thinking, although i haven't biro'd my ear for a couple of weeks, so the deafness came out of the blue. Jesus! Neverstick a biro in your ear! You may well have caused some damage. If you are really sure it isn't wax, make a doctor's appointment and get it treated. In fact even if it is wax, do that, so they can syringe it out safely after it has been softened up with drops or olive oil.

In fact even if it is wax, do that, so they can syringe it out safely after it has been softened up with drops or olive oil. I managed to perforate my ear drum with a cotton bud. Basically I was trying to brush my teeth at the same time as cleaning my ear. Brain got confused as to which hand should be brushing teeth vigorously and which hand should be sensitively drying shower water from the edge of the ear. The doctor said that you should put nothing smaller than your elbow inside your ear. I think this is doctor-code for put nothing inside your ear - on the basis that the elbow is pretty big and it's not easy to get it near your ear anyway. Mine had the same symptoms as Dog and eventually it bled into the pillow while I was sleeping. I woke up to think I'd had my throat cut in the night. Anyway, after that it took about 3 months to get back to some form or normal hearing. Still hurt the last time I went on a plane though.

buctootim Posted 16 May, 2012 Share Posted 16 May, 2012 Thanks for your advice Ken Tone, i will book up with the doc if it hasn't gone away by the end of the month. The doc will tell you to put a couple of drops of olive oil into your ears at night. Least thats what mine told me and it worked a treat (after the over counter drops failed to do anything)

Least thats what mine told me and it worked a treat (after the over counter drops failed to do anything) IF it is wax, which is why he has to see the doc to confirm first, then yes this works better than most of the commercial drops, but my tip is to warm the oil a bit to around blood temperature, by eg holding in a teaspoon in the steam of a kettle. But don't overheat! And then put a cotton wool 'plug' in outer ear after the oil, to stop the wax drying out again. The whole point is to soften the wax so the medic can wash it out without perforating your ear drum by using too much pressure.

RonManager Posted 16 May, 2012 Share Posted 16 May, 2012 You come over as a creature of the physical senses, so my advice is get your ears syringed anyway - it's BRIILLLLIIAAANNTTT. It feels like your whole head's getting a warm flush-out. Afterwards you'll realise just how deaf you were. Why you'll be able to hear a pin drop on Mars! Dog Posted 16 May, 2012 Author Share Posted 16 May, 2012 OK, is it safe to squirt olive oil into my earhole, and will the wax fall out on its own?
buctootim Posted 16 May, 2012 Share Posted 16 May, 2012 OK, is it safe to squirt olive oil into my earhole, and will the wax fall out on its own? Yep. Couple of drops, then put some cotton wool in and leave overnight. Wax liquidises and flows down the little eustacian tubes into your throat (did for me anyway). sussexsaint Posted 16 May, 2012 Share Posted 16 May, 2012 Heat a teaspoon under the hot tap - put a few drops of oil onto the teaspoon after you have dried it to let it take up some of the heat then pour it into the ear and lie down on the other one. leave it still like that for 10 to 20 minutes then sit up and put a bit of cotton wool inthe ear to catch the drops - it will feel weird and you will go totally deaf with the oil in it will soften the wax and if you do that twice a day for a few days it may be enough to loosen enough for yu to hear again propewrly but you will probably still need them syringing please don't put water in the ear or try and rise it inthe shower - it makes it worse and don't put anything else in the ear at all
Ken Tone Posted 16 May, 2012 Share Posted 16 May, 2012 OK, is it safe to squirt olive oil into my earhole, and will the wax fall out on its own? Dog --I'm not sure if you are just taking the ****. But if you are serious, and you've never had waxed up ears before, you ought to go to a doctor first to check that that really is the problem. You should not be pouring olive oil into your ear if what you have is a perforated ear drum for example. If it is wax, it may fall out if you're lucky, but most people need to have a nurse or doctor syringe it out after it has been softened up... which is not as bad as it sounds. S/he just squirts warm water into your ear and washes out the wax.

Joe Kirkup Posted 16 May, 2012 Share Posted 16 May, 2012 Be careful, I had it back in Feb, it gradually got worse and then I started falling over. Turned out to be Labyrinthitis. It's really horrible and still haven't got rid of it completely. Fed up with people asking me if I'm drunk when I walk down the street

It's really horrible and still haven't got rid of it completely. Fed up with people asking me if I'm drunk when I walk down the street I used to get that. The only thing that helped was alcohol (to drink - not in my ear) - sort of redressed the balance.
