St Jim Posted 4 June, 2012 Share Posted 4 June, 2012 I think we all have to face facts that England are not as good as we like to think they are. RH has picked some unliekly candidates for his squad but tbf those 'tried & tested' players most people think should be in the squad but aren't, have on the whole failed to impress in an England shirt. (I can't remember the last time I saw England and thought Rio Ferdinand, Micah Richards, Adam Johnson or Michael Carrick were outstanding)

Richards is still only 23 and has only played for England 13 times, so I wouldn't really call that 'tried and tested'. Johnson like Richards is still young (24) and has only played for England 11 times. Downing is picked ahead of Johnson and he yet he is older has played 34 times and scored zero goals for England which I believe fits into the 'tried and tested' argument. Carrick I have to agree with you, however I think anyone with any footballing knowledge can see that he is easily better than Jordon bloody Henderson who has looked absolutely woeful at Liverpool. Basically Hodgson's reasons for his selections are laughable and to see the likes of Kelly, Henderson, Carroll and Downing ahead of Ferdinand, Richards, Johnson, Carrick, Crouch and even Holt is just ludicrous. SAF said that Rio was incapable of playing 3 games in quick succession, perhaps Rio should tweet Sir Alex asing him to keep his nose out of England selections. Carrick refused to go on the stand by list, so once there were drop outs Woy could hardly turn to him. As for Richards, I rate him, but Capello and Woy clearly dont and I think they know a bit more about it than us.
Wade Garrett Posted 5 June, 2012 Share Posted 5 June, 2012 Richards didn't want to go on the standby list either.
Thedelldays Posted 5 June, 2012 Share Posted 5 June, 2012 Adrian's Mancini rates him that highly that he never plays him in the big games
Itchen_block4 Posted 6 June, 2012 Share Posted 6 June, 2012 Assuming Ferdinand has talked himself out of contention, would Ryan Shawcross be the next centre half in line? Solid and underrated because Stoke are percieved as synonymous with alehouse football. Stoke would have gone down by now if they were ****e and as one of their key players, I think he deserves recognition.
saint lard Posted 7 June, 2012 Share Posted 7 June, 2012 Defoe has returned to England following the death of his father this morning.
S-Clarke Posted 7 June, 2012 Author Share Posted 7 June, 2012 That's sad for Defoe, puts it all into perspective. Can't imagine he'll rejoin the squad now.
Hatch Posted 7 June, 2012 Share Posted 7 June, 2012 Sad news. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/18352148 Was he ill, or is this completely out of the blue? Defoe is only 29 so his father can't be that old.
