Sour Mash Posted 15 May, 2012 Share Posted 15 May, 2012 Coverage of this appears nothing but positive, despite him being a proud anti-scouse Manc and the player that led the threat to strike after the Rio Ferdinand drugs ban. Odd that everyone now loves him as he's been in a few decent appearances as a pundit.
Colinjb Posted 15 May, 2012 Share Posted 15 May, 2012 As a pundit though he has been insightful, articulate, knowledgable and now he is out of the Man Utd set up quite fair in his judgement of other teams. A great choice for coach by my reckoning and maybe even a future England manager.
Frank's cousin Posted 15 May, 2012 Share Posted 15 May, 2012 NOt really when you think about it... we all hate those players who are so partizan when they play, WUMs of teh highest order unless they play for your club. When tehy retire and if they are sensible and no longer toe that same 'party' line, but offer a more balanced and reasonable opinion (helps they are also usually older, more mature), we see a diffrent side to them... Use dto hate him, still dont like him, but mellowing... Same with others like Claridge or the ponce with the blond hair Savage... even that blinkin Welsh **** Bellamy, has shown hes not all bad through his work (mostly unpublicised) in Africa. But as he showed as a player, Man Utd are far higher up his priority list than England when leading the strike threat. Guess there won't be a huge scouse contingent in the squad anyway and the likes of him and Gerrard are old enough and professional enough to get on with the job anyway. Saw a suggestion from a journalist on Twitter this morning suggesting him as a future England manager, can't picture it myself.

True, and if those partizan elements hold back the national side, or get in the way of doing what's right for the England team, then he will have failed... but We all mature, get wiser and without the restrictions/strings to his old employer we maybe should be open minded... I know its not easy, as I used to hate the fecker, bordering on an unhelathy level!
OldNick Posted 15 May, 2012 Share Posted 15 May, 2012 Watching him on sky has lifted him in my estimation, big time. Even when summarizing Man U games he has been even handed. After Man city had won the league he was very fair and congratulated them. im not sure if i was a pundit and the Skates had won the league i would have been so fair. It could be a masterstroke by Hodgson, just think it could have been Kevin bond Lol

In all seriousness though, I agree, he is a good appointment, just an "interesting" more than anything, would always have had him down as going into the Man Utd coaching side rather than England. And definitely an improvement on Kevin Bond!

Gerrard and Neville are apparently good mates, Neville tried to persuade him to join Liverpool when they were away at Euro 2004.
S-Clarke Posted 15 May, 2012 Share Posted 15 May, 2012 Good job for him. I must say he's gone way up in my estimations in his short sky career (I guess that'll still continue...?). He's shown he knows what he's talking about for a start, and has a real tactical awareness of teams and players.....He's the sort of guy you want in and around the England squad if we're honest, not Italians who can't speak full English and just speak with Capello....you want coaches who can interact with the players at a similar level. We kind of have that with Andy Crosby and that link between the players and the manager is pretty crucial. I don't think we ever had that under Capello. The whole Cappelo set up was an absolute joke and shows what an unaccountable mess the FA hierachy are - how much do you think Capello and his staff cost us all told? £40/50m? And for what? And for what? I wouldn't want to know to be honest, but we wasted a fortune on foreigners. The whole setup as you said was wrong, there was no real team-ethic about it. from the outside it felt as if the players were in school for the summer, and Capello was their headmaster.....the performances looked so restricted and suffocated, the players never really relaxed under Capello. There's no doubt he's a good manager as he's won shed loads, but he tried to create a 'club' environment from what I could tell.

He's made Andy gray look like a fool! You kind of sit up and take notice of what he says and you think ''Oh, good point...''. He fair as well, I mean as a ManU guy...how hard must it have been to see Man City do what they did, but he was full of praise and gracious. A lot of quality's there and you can see why his popularity has shot through the roof. I also loved his commentary in the Chelsea Barca game...''goaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaal''...lol
