Saints Retained List

Saint Charlie

Sing someone at least as good to challenge for his place. FACT.

If we can of course..If we can't we still need a second keeper. I'm not one for signing lots of average squad players but in this case we need a second keeper, if we can get someone as good as or better the KD great, if not we still need a backup.... unless Nigel feels up to:)

In terms of how the 25 man squad might shape up, before any addiitons or other leavers, the retained list currently leaves us with 24 players over 21:

Kelvin Davis

Tommy Forecast

Frazer Richardson

Danny Butterfield

Danny Fox

Dan Harding

Lee Dickson

Jose Fonte

Jos Hooiveld

Aaron Martin

Dan Seaborne

Jason Puncheon

Steve de Ridder

Morgan Schneiderlin

Jack Cork

Dean Hammond

Richard Chaplow

Adam Lallana

Rickie Lambert

Billy Sharp

Guly do Prado

Tadanari Lee

Lee Barnard

Jonathan Forte

Take those in red out of the equation as probable loan deals, pending sales or in the case of Forecast assignment to the training ground staff and that leaves 19. So I think that means we could buy-in up to six new senior players? That would be GK, CB, RB, CAM, RW, ST - which seems to be about right. My shopping list would be...

GK - Robinson

CB - Scott Dann

CAM - Pienaar

RW - Jarvis

ST - Rodrigues

Connolly was expected really with his age/injuries.

Jaidi was obviously retiring anyway, but he would be good to have around at the club still.

Lee Holmes would probably fit in well somewhere like Swindon.

Shame for Bart really after being so loyal and not really getting the break he needed. He's only 24 though and has a bright future ahead of him. Could maybe see him moving to the continent.

He wanted regular first team action...I'm guessing that wasn't on the cards moving will probably be his best bet.

Lee Dickson ?! ha Ryan Dickson you mean !!

Wouldn't be surprised to see Puncheon gone either. Would say that one of Butterfield and Frazer will also be got rid of with us bringing in another RB.

Butterfield has only recently signed a new contract, hasn't he?

I think 6/7 of those above will be sold/loaned/simply not included in the 25 man squad. Namely:

Forecast

Dickson

Seaborne

Puncheon

Forte

Barnard

Possibly -

Chaplow

Hammond

The 4 new additions are under 21 so do not need to be included, yet give us 3rd choice rb/lb and extra midfield cover.

I think you could add Harding & Butters to the possibly list too.

Over land and sea posted this list, my guess at those likely to be sold or loaned out are in Red!

Harsh on Chappers and Hammond, but we need to push on and establish ourselves in the PL

I don't think that's true. But you do need a certain minimum of "home grown" players, 8 I think.

Correct, and even home-grown players do not actually have to have been with Sainst for 3 years, only that they have been registered with English (or Welsh) clubs for at least 3 years. We have absolutely no problem meeting this criterium, indeed I think approx 17 of our players qualify as "home grown", even Spiderman is in this category. Only exceptions are Jos, Jose, Chung, Guly and Steve (I've probably missed someone).

Don't know why so many people have difficulty understanding the rules, they are relatively straightforward, and can be easily looked up.

Fonte must have played in England for more than 3 years? Joined Palace in 2007?

I don't think that's how the Homegrown rule works, I think you have to be registered with a club in England for at least 3 years before you turn 21. So that means if we signed a 17 year old from, say, Kazakhstan, 3 years from the date we signed him he would count as a homegrown player. I think that's how it works anyway, MLG will need to clarify that ;)

Yeah good point he's let me down! Over lands can you come back and say who is sold or sent out on season long loans?

Yes, I'll keep the list updated over the summer. AIn the meantime we are not short of views on here about who should be sold or sent out on loan!

And well spotted Saint Garrett - I've corrected the list re Ryan Dickson.

No, you're right Spiderman was nearly 19 when he signed so does not count as homegrown. 3 years prior to 21st birthday is the criterium which I was aware of. I thought Spiderman was younger than that when he signed. Seems like Lowe cocked that one up as well :-) I don't think there are any other players though who don't count as homegrown.

  • 2 weeks later...
Lee Holmes (and his unfeasibly large thighs) has gone to Preston.

http://www.pnefc.net/page/NewsDetail/0,,10362~2790724,00.html?

Best of luck to him, always rated him as a player here despite his injury problems. Even though he was ruled out with injury quite often, he did a hell of a lot of charity and community work in the area for which he won a few awards.

Good luck, Lee!

Schneiderlin signed for Saints in June 2008. Aged 18½. He has played 4 seasons to date for Saints, and was 21 in November 2010.

I think there are grounds for counting him as " home-grown".

I haven't read the small print, but as I recall there are various interpretations of how you calculate the 3 years / 3 seasons ?

He was already INTO his third season when he reached 21...maybe it counts in the season you are 21, as they do with the U21 international squads.? Something for the PL lawyers to decide on.

Just thought I would see how our favourite wannabe footballer is getting on...Now in the USA playing for Orlando City (with Wayne Rooney's brother!)

55 senior league appearances in 10 years with 12 different teams (most of which have been in lower league football)

Just like Forecast, makes me wonder how I slipped through the net! Based on Pulis' talent, I think I could command at least £2K a week - and the furthest I ever got in my footballing career was a trial with WBA's youth team when I was 14.

WTF ? Forecast is our #2 goalie ????????

People seem clueless on how a contract works.

Yes, but on the bright side we only have to field one goalkeeper, and we don't have a match for over 2 months.

My favourite thing about this is that they post MLS salaries in the public domain, the likes of Tim Ream (now Bolton) were on about $30,000 A SEASON last year, and Poolis isn't even at THAT level, he's playing in the league below. So whilst he's still making money for being a footballer, he's probably not even getting the equivalent of the UK's average wage a year any more.

As for "trial when 14", were you a very tall teenager ?

Trial may be a tad optomistic! ;)

Was invited up to WBA for weekend along with two other lads I played football with in local team. 1 of the lads was offered a YTS style contract, me and t'other were told thanks but no thanks. I was realistic about it at the time, I was and still am a decent player but nowhere near good enough to play anything above local football. One lad I played with as a youth was at Saints until he was released by Sturrock. Mike Green - Fullback if I remember.
