Had this discussion the other day, with some Saints fans and neutrals. The neutral opinion was that it would be massively harsh to not have Davis as the no. 1 keeper for the Prem. The Saints fans (including me), while recognising his contribution were of the opinion that we need a really top keeper from the start of the season, and someone who is more accomplished than Davis at command of the area and distribution.

I equated it to when we signed Niemi. Jones was a decent keeper and gave us good service, but Niemi came in a took us onto a whole new level with some of his brilliance.

I believe that Hart is the best keeper in the PL, have you watched his distribution, and he doesnt go to take crosses either. To drop KD would be a travesty and should be given his chance. if he fails then i would agree he should step down, but a player who has been voted the BEST in his league 2 seasons running by the players he is up against is no bad thing. We dont watch the other keepers every week and notice their howlers. Where's Richard Wright now? there were many on here who wanted to get rid of KD and have him instead, thank heavens the professionals didnt take that option.

A travesty?

What I think would be a travesty would be to assume that Kelvin can comfortably make the step up, and not sign another keeper because of that. KD has done brilliantly in the last 2 years, but sentimentality can play no part in professional football. If there is a better option available we'd be utter mugs not to pursue it.

And claiming that Joe Hoart doesn't take crosses is daft, he commands his box brilliantly. Which is part of the reason why he is comfortably the nation's top keeper.

very well put.

All clubs are obliged to release their lists six weeks before the 30th June(when players contracts generally end) so that those players that are released can talk to other clubs.

Saints - always leave it until the last possible day.

I think this is a tactic that is much outdated, and watching football at the highest level, you rarely see keepers dashing out to collect centres all the time, when they have talented defenders around them who are meant to do THAT job.

The main reason being that in the Prem / and/ Internationals ...strikers are much sharper, and can take half chances. Even when they miss, we say it was a good chance..if the goalie misses a cross /centre- it's invariably a goal, hence few come outside the 6 yard box unless it's to take a 50/50 ball, or a back pass.

For my money, any goalie who has to come out to collect such balls all the time, either has 100% confidence that he can take it , or has little confidence in the defenders around him.

At least we'll be able to double guess what positions NA wants to fill if ..for example, if we release three or four defenders...or a goalie. Bart is OOC I think.

Won't be able to tell a lot apart from goalie. None of the defenders are out of contract.

Well I thought Harding was (?)...and it was said that Jaidi will retire, and Seaborne, Richardson, Butterfield and Dickson are all OOC in 2013.

with no guarantee of resigning any of them next season, I expect NA to sign ...at least one full back, and another CB and not just wait for them to play out their time.

Yes, but we're in 2012...

It's almost like some people think we can just put names on a list that we no longer want and just chuck them out, regardless of contracts. The only first teamers OOC are Bart, Jaidi, Connolly really and they only played about 7 games between them all year!

No surprises given the step up in class required for the Premier League.

Hadn't given it much thought until now, but I do feel a new first choice keeper should be a priority this summer. I've often thought that keepers offer the best value for money because a very good one is worth as many points as a top striker, but at a fraction of the cost. Michel Vorm for Swansea a good example. Davis will always be a club hero for his role in the promotions, but to be competitive in the PL I fear we'll need someone with more all-round quality.

so ...it'll be TWO new keepers to be signed then.

Certainly an older pro-keeper as back-up/competition for KD, and a younger talent .....(unless anyone is contemplating a place in the squad for TF.?)

another striker ...to take up Connolly's place

and another CB -as expected Jahdi will retire.

PLUS ..A.N.Other, experienced, tougher midfielder (in the Jimmy Case mould.)

None of the others ever looked to be serious contenders for a first team spot...but it still leaves us with a VERY big squad to have to choose 25 from.

EXPECT moves for the likes of Dickson, Forte amongst others.... maybe a few more " fringe names" who may go in part-ex for new signings ?

Only interesting bit is Bart which means we may well bring in two keepers unless there is a decent youngster hanging around.

Jaidi set to stay in some capacity.

Thanks to Connolly...might not have played many games but scored some massive goals!

WTF???

So we go through another season without a "proper" "quality" RM??

why are people assuming TWO keepers will be signed.

another half baked idea on SWF

Because we all know Forecast doesn't count, we have released to Gs from the Academy and our no 2 has gone. If we want 3 keepers we need to bring two in unless its one plus Chris Johns.

no surprises really, shame for Bart as he did show such great promise before his big injury

a bit sad, for Old Lang Syne and all that, but football is a serious business and I'm afraid the writing was on the wall after that Blackpool game.

Deffo hope RJ stays as a coach.

Now means we need to sell forecast forte and personally i would sell Harding and either Butters or Richardson if we can bring in better replacements, unless Stephens and Shaw are the future LB and RBs and there going to be blooded in this season, personally both should go on loan to league one for 3/4 months and if they have done well play in the 2nd half of the season.

Gutted about Dean, Brentford fan i know reckons he is quality and hoping they resign him, but assumes he will end up signing for a team headed for promotion out of league one or maybe sign as for a Championship side, i think out of the list he has the brightest future, bart is the other gutting one, personally he needed a massive confidence boast poss a loan or a run of games in pre season and he may of shown his promise again, deffo need a young keeper, i would sign that brum keeper whos on standby for England he is ment to be a young decent keeper.

Exactly, we will sign one that is for sure. Despite not thinking he is good enough to stay who is actually going to buy Forecast off us? I bet he stays to see out his contract in the summer of 2013. We also have Chris Johns who has been signed as a Pro so with one new addition that will then have 4 keepers in the squad which is enough to start the season off with.

Delighted for the four lads making the step up. Especially excited about Luke Shaw. I think he will be the first to break through into the starting 11. What do others think? Prowse is a CM isn't he? Seems a bit light weight but very composed on th ball.

Chris Johns is the youngest(?) of the Academy keepers and played U17 for Northern Ireland last season.

Saw him on a televised game v. England U17. Is tall, looked calm and confident, but a long way from first team esp. Prem. level.

so too did Steve Williams aged 18, (1976) ..but you could see the quality from his first game.

I don't think Forecast is seriously considered but he management know they are stuck with him. He won't be named in the 25 man squad, nor play in the Cup and he hasnt played a game in four years at Saints so fair to say he doesn't really count as GK option IMO

Posted

Congratulations to those offered new contracts, my thanks and best wishes for their future to all those leaving - especially the youngsters.

The fact that Bart is among the latter group surely confirms that the signature of a new goal keeper must be a work in progress.

Posted

I predict Chambers will be the next big thing, great pace with skill, no doubt a youngster will be on the bench every week and thrown on if we are winning by 3 goals.

As for keepers, I believe we only have 2 keepers at the club until you hit the under 15's.

Heard Jaidi has two choices to make, stay as a coach at Saints or goes into TV/Radio.

Finally I'm surprised By Mowthorpe as I thought he was pretty good.

you really think this..?

we had 5 subs last time with no keeper.....so assuming we have a keeper this time...and a "youngster"...you really think we will restrict our options to 5 subs..?

Four players out of the Academy, not just into the first team squad, but judged by Adkins and his coaching team to be capable of playing in the Premier League. How much time any of them get on the pitch will be down to performance when opportunities are offered but they all have one advantage of youth which is speed and fitness. If two of them, or even just one, get extended runs in the team this season, that will still be a tremendous outcome for the Academy because we aren't talking about L1 football any more. Fingers crossed for them all, and for the fans.

I may be making this up, but didn't Adkins say at some point that we would always have a youth player on the bench next season? Even if he didn't, I still don't reckon it's as ridiculous as you say. Part of NCs plan for the club is to have youth players making the grade in the first team, and that has to start somewhere.
