Well, that was shocking.

I guess it was the emotional aftermath of that breathless last 4 minutes at Eastlands.

But NOBODY noticed a rather IMPORTANT fact.

That as the Citeh fans did their Pitch Invasion, the 2011/12 English PL Season officially ended and as a result SOUTHAMPTON finally became official members of the PREMIER LEAGUE.

Shame on us!

What the point of this??

It was important enough to have been Tweeted by Saintsfanzone last night and a whole bunch of other fans. Thought it was a minor Historical moment

Technically we were still an FL team with P against our name up until the official end of season, as of last night we are an official PL team.

We're not officially Premiership for me until I have to search for our club news in the "Premier League" section of the football section of the BBC sports web page. :)

This. When I update my BBC and Newsnow links to point to the Premiership, we will have arrived. Rather like that point in my old copy of Championship Manager 2003/4 when the PC chugs along as it updates all the leagues. Was it 30 June?

I just realised the year we were relegated was the year I finished school & the year we're promoted is the year I finish University

You can read alot of things into this:

I was born in 76 when saints won the FA cup, my son was born in 2010 when we won the JPT cup.

I was 2 when we last got promotion to the top flight and my son is two this year.

Good article, thanks for spotting and posting the link...

I guess it depends on the perspective though - should football have remained the 'property' of the loyal fans who go week in week out, or has the sky era made it more accessable to the masses in their armchairs? - the overpaid prima donnas is ultimately a sdirect result of the sky money, but that has only been available because of the demand of the TV fan. We can all balme Murdoch, but he in a way just gave the punters at home what they wanted.

For me the problem was/is not the extra cash that suddenly flooded the the game, but the distribution of it. The PL were more obsessed with their brand that they forgot to put in place appropriate sporting safeguards that would not only ensure a more competitive league, but safeguard the groundroots and the national game (which they said was their main reason for the break away... yeah right). They could have ensured that more cash was better distributed. If each of the relagated clubs was not promoted and just took the parachute payments that could total as much as £128 is spent in parachutes , why could that not be more equally divided amongst all NPC teams?

Wage caps, a max of 25mil per club per year in the prem from sky etc then the NPC clubs could get around 12-13mil + L1 say 5mil etc and so on... would have kept the gap beteen old top flight and the next tiers more equal - and prevented alot of the mad panic spending and financial ruin that many clubs try to save their prem position... and the ownership rules should have sorted long before the need for FFP - but a wage cap would have allowed rich owners to build infratructure, without 'buying' silverware.

The wage cap would also mean, more clubs could have held on to tehir own talen - at least for a little longer and sen seen some benefit on the pitch, not just in off setting teh excessive wage costs of teh palyers that remain....

Oh wel, lets see what happens, but whilst its excellent to be part of the top flight from a status and sporting perspective, I cant get over the fact that without 50-100mil extra revenue per year on top of the sky millions, we will not be able to have a go at winning that hideously ugly cheap looking trophy...

I'd be surprised if anything points to the PremierSHIP.

But yes, June 30th - July 1st, the day all player contracts flip over into a new year is the "start of the new season".

Did nobody watch West Ham outside the Championship last year? Unbelievable that the so many are tipping WHU to be the ones to stay up out of the 3 promoted teams. They were lucky to even go up!! If they play like they did this season then they'll finish bottom.

It's just occurred to me that we will be starting the season in 13th place due to alphabtical order. Uh-oh.

Although, having looked back through the last 10 seasons, the team starting 13th has never been relegated.

That is the best stit i have ever heard

We're now in the "official" close season (internationals don't count) so you can argue your official dates any time from now until July 1st when we are definitely, properly, officially in the Premier League again.

Nice to keep a track of what's switching over though. I saw Huddersfield appear in "Championship news" on SSN yesterday, so I assume we're in the Prem News there now, too.

If a 'stit' is a cross between a stat and a load of '****', you're right, because I completely made it up. Having done a bit of research though, in the 20 year history of the Premier League, only 3 teams starting in 13th have gone on to go down. Middlesboro' (in the first season), Man City and Newcastle. Still, that's probably better than most other starting positions, right? Ok, maybe not.... I dunno.

Speaking of being officially Premier League. Reading's OS ran this story yesterday:

http://www.readingfc.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10306~2794792,00.html

There's also another story about fan getting the Premier League logo tattooed on his arm. He's going to look like a right bellend a few years down the line. I'm glad our OS would never publish anything that cringeworthy.

I am amused that over the course of 20 years of the Premiership and Premier League, with 3 relegation places, in a League that for the vast majority of seasons has been 20 teams, a random selection of one position alphabetically has produced 3 relegation results.

20 years, 20 teams, 3 relegation places, 3 "13ths" relegated. Anyone would think it was a statistical likelihood.

And yes, I know there were 22 teams and 4 relegated sometime early on. Also that if you'd chosen team 1 they'd never have been relegated, but that's because it's always been Arsenal.
