This Charming Man Posted 14 May, 2012 Share Posted 14 May, 2012 So who is this Mark Guidi who thinks we're trying to sign players to mount a 'survival bid' next season? A bit cheeky that old son! How is it? What else are you expecting us to achieve this season, other than survival? We're a newly promoted side and the vast majority will be expecting us to be involved in a relegation battle next season. Other than this season, the last time all 3 newly promoted sides stayed up was 11 years ago. History tends to suggest we'll be in the mix.

derry Posted 14 May, 2012 Share Posted 14 May, 2012 I don't remember Davis so I can't comment but we need a central midfielder that can get beyond the strikers and attack the penalty area adding some goals.
Turkish Posted 14 May, 2012 Share Posted 14 May, 2012 I don't remember Davis so I can't comment but we need a central midfielder that can get beyond the strikers and attack the penalty area adding some goals. Why? Our tactic of not having a cental midfield that can get beyond the strikers and attack the penalty area adding some goals worked perfectly well last season. Remind who scored the most goals in the division we were in.
Saint Charlie Posted 14 May, 2012 Share Posted 14 May, 2012 Correct. I also recall Strachan saying he had a deal lined up for Saha and Malbranque from Fulham for about £12m and Lowe wouldn't do it because he didn't want to make a rival financially stronger. Thomas Rosiky was another one that we could have got and didn't happen. Drogba could have got a work permit, that was Mido who didn't. We could have had Drogba for 2m but thought he was too similar to Beattie and only liked playing up front on his own. Source: Terry Cooper in a Sky Sports article I read about a week ago. Our formation was a deep lying midfield two supplying a front four...much like Man City. Nobody moaned that Barry, De Jong and Yaya Toure (when playing that role) rarely score... Could have signed him for 2m but it was when Beattie was flying and Drogba was seen as being only effective up front on his own and he went to Marseille...the rest is history. Not sure on Malouda to be honest. Adebayor was the one who Lowe didn't like his attitude. Can see why.
Window Cleaner Posted 14 May, 2012 Share Posted 14 May, 2012 Pretty sure Drogba is a dual national actually,he was in France when he was a little kid, sent by the parents to some team's academy or other, want to say Dijon but not at all sure. It was due to a work permit we couldn't sign Adebayor (as a 19 year old): http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11700_2272487,00.html

So are you suggesting we play with 3 attacking midfielders and one defensive one and that we change our entire game plan of using attacking full backs who can deliver all so we can have this central midfielder who can get beyond the strikers and score goals? Would you not take 45 goals and a mid table finish then?

I'm saying that if Schneiderlin/Cork or Hammond sit in the middle we will be picking the ball out of our net regularly and will struggle to get out of our half. Anyone who thinks Richardson and Fox are going to have the pace and freedom to do what they did in the Championship is living in cloud cuckoo land. MerceSaint28 Posted 15 May, 2012 Share Posted 15 May, 2012 Sorry back to the point in hand...Davis is not good enough for Saints. I live in London and used to have a Fulham season ticket about 3/4 years ago as it was only £300 and used to watch Davis or "snooker" as he was known... If you were in the Champ, he would be an option but no way the Prem....never never good enough We should be looking at players like N'zonzi or Palacios

I think his wife is from Glasgow and he (read she) wants to go back there. It would also be a nice place for him to finish up as he could probably play until he is 40 up there and they love a hard tackling nutter. I expect Joey Barton to end up playing for Rangers as soon as they sort out their finances and are free to over spend again.

I think the greyness of Glasgow will help his eyes hold out for another year or so. His love of the fans (the same love of the fans that kept Le Tissier and Kelvin here - the kind of fan love that wears tight jeans and shopping and I don't mean Turkish) will mean that anyone else but Glasgow Rangers will not be in with a shout of acquiring his services.
