Rise of the South

By that reckoning Norwich are a nothern team ! And how do you refer to Plymouth, which is further away from Soton than Birmingham is.

What a parochial view you take of the world.

Considering I live up north I think my view is quite accurate.

Neither the carrot crunchers or wurzels to the west or east are relevant to this conversation. This is purely a North/South thread.

My post wasn't directed at yours, but those further up the thread, however, from my perspective, the 'northern' teams in the Prem are Newcastle and Sunderland, and you are in the midlands !

Anything North of the Watford gap is the North. The Midlands is purely a term used to describe a region of the North.

When asking for directions, you don't hear anyone say "take a left then head Midlands'. It's not North, South, East, West, Midlands. Therefore the Midlands cannot be anything else other than Northern.

It's the North. FACT.

Rise of the Football League too... the gap is no longer so wide.

All 3 teams that went up last year have stayed up... should give us some belief for next year.

Or the nervousness of being the only promoted club in two seasons to have been relegated...

The only Southern team I care about is Southampton. West Ham can do one. Come on Blackpool.

Correct. I am horrified my daughter has a Derbyshire accent. It's north up here. North. These people are Northerners.

If you take a line running approximately due north from Southampton, running through Oxford and terminating at Berwick, the northernmost point in England, the line is 60 miles between Soton and Oxford, ( which is just about as far north as Watford ), and there is approx 270 miles between Oxford and Berwick. The halfway point, which presumably divides the nothern half of the country from the southern half, lies around Sheffield.

It doesn't work like that. Everything north or Winchester and south of Sheffield = The Midlands. Everything north of Sheffield is called Scotland.

Personally, I view next season with trepidation. All the really **** teams in the Premier League (bar Villa) have now gone down - that's the only reason the promoted sides have done so well - now it's just the quality teams left :-(

Anything further than chilworth is northern,Southampton ends on the town side of the itchen bridge and then Pompey starts IMO......there's some strange people over that bridge.

I don't necessarily agree with all you say, lordswood - but I admire your no-nonsense approach to assigning geographical labels.

Not sure my Weston-raised Dad would be entirely happy with the notion that he is a skate, or that Southampton City Council would be happy with this land you've just ceded to Pompey.

That said, my fervent belief is that the best bit of Southampton is between the rivers - so you've got a bit of support here :)

That is rich, from somebody residing in Lordswood!

The most effective way to divide the nation geographically, socially and economically is to simply draw a line from The Wash to the Severn Estuary.

Anything or person from under the line is 'southern' and southern in culture and social mores.
