Colinjb Posted 11 May, 2012 Share Posted 11 May, 2012 Yes he will be opposing us next year but the man who sowed some not insignificant seeds here had just been named as Premier League manager of the season. Bravo Alan.

eling-saint Posted 11 May, 2012 Share Posted 11 May, 2012 When appointed here, was no fan, however he was good for us and was disappointed when he left. Time showed a good move for him and Saints. So well done to him, will give him a warm welcome next season!!

saints_is_the_south Posted 11 May, 2012 Share Posted 11 May, 2012 When you consider that he was only appointed manager here what, 2 or 3 weeks before the start of the season and with the team he had to start that season against Millwall on the opening day, he did a very good job here IMO. He rebuilt our side and he takes a fair bit of credit for where we are now for me. Can't really grumble at many of his signings for us, and of course he signed the goal machine. Very good manager, and congratulations to him for what he's achieved at Newcastle - breaking into the top 4/5 in the Premier League is no mean feat. Monkou Posted 11 May, 2012 Share Posted 11 May, 2012 Great acheivement at newcastle and as other have said, did a lot of important rebuilding work for us. Best manager ever though! Has to be Lawrie or Ted? Probably Lawrie as football is about winning trophies.... and he did.

S-Clarke Posted 11 May, 2012 Share Posted 11 May, 2012 He's done a good job at Newcastle, and he doesn't deserve any criticism from us regarding his time here. He built the base here and allowed us to push on from that, and for that I'll always be grateful. Adkins has taken us on, but Pardew started the journey. saints_is_the_south Posted 11 May, 2012 Share Posted 11 May, 2012 Just taking a look at the starting line up and subs bench for the 1st game of the season against Millwall in 09/10, and it really does hit home how far we have come since then. Davis; Murty, Thomas, Perry, Harding; Lallana, Wotton, Schneiderlin, James; Saganowski, Paterson. Subs: Gillett, Bialkowski, Holmes, Pulis, Thomson, Gobern & Lancashire. SNSUN Posted 11 May, 2012 Share Posted 11 May, 2012 I was actually chuffed when we he joined, because he was a high profile name for a League One side. (Especially one that had a challenge as we did of the -10 points.) He had money at his disposal, and he signed the players he thought could do the job of promotion. They did, and he will always be the manager that signed Lambert. He also guided us to Wembley, and won us a trophy. However I do think that any manager worth his salt could've done just as good a job as him, given the finances Markus had afforded the club, and ultimately after things started going stale, Cortese made the correct decision to appoint Adkins. Pardew would've gotten us promoted IMO, but not as quickly as Adkins did. What Adkins has done is nothing short of miraculous.
dubai_phil Posted 11 May, 2012 Share Posted 11 May, 2012 Pardew put the building blocks in place for our further successes. Of that there can be no doubt and we were extremely lucky to have got him at that time. Every Saints fan should bless him for that. However he had also reached the end of his time with us, the mumblings about Plan B's and inconsistent results were spreading out from match day thread stereotypical over reactions. He had also possibly due to his greater experience, failed to see just what the whole "Positive Attitude for Dummies" book would really mean around the club and his relationship with NC appeared to become a problem. I think the JPT final while tinpot was something he saw as really important in creating a winning mentality in the team and MORE importantly us fans after so many years of hanging on and then failure. I think we let him go at the right time, I think Newcastle have been the beneficiaries of that and of course we have then gone on to become better and better (to date) under one of the best young managers in the game. Well done AP and thank God you went when you did and Newcastle have been the beneficiaries of that. The big man upstairs smiled on both us in that particular journey, so I congratulate him on his success (and luck in finding Demba Ba of course) Would still be funny if they come 4th & Chelsea beat Bayern though

Pedro Posted 11 May, 2012 Share Posted 11 May, 2012 He was a great appointment at the time, made some excellent signings and I can remember him saying that he never had a scouting team, he knew nothing about the forthcoming opposition but he would make sure that whatever happened in the future with him he would make sure the club had a good infrastracture. I had a personal run in with him but I still respect him and will applaud him on his return.

corsacar saint Posted 11 May, 2012 Share Posted 11 May, 2012 Well done to Alan Pardew, however whether he would have got us into the premiership as quickly as NA is a moot point. SuperMikey Posted 12 May, 2012 Share Posted 12 May, 2012 I don't think we'd be in the position we're in now if we still had Pardew in charge. doddisalegend Posted 12 May, 2012 Share Posted 12 May, 2012 He was a good manager for us at a very difficult time of re-building the club ... I was pretty ****ed when he left. It's worked out well for everyone in the end and Nigel turned out to be a great replacement. At the end of the day Alan Pardew managed to give me something I'd never experinced (I couldn't even walk in 1976) ...a saints team winning, and easily to, a cup (tinpot or not) final...... For that alone I will always like the guy and glad to see him doing so well.

farawaysaint Posted 12 May, 2012 Share Posted 12 May, 2012 Is he the best buyer of a player in the UK? Newcastle fans convinced his recent success is down to their head scout as opposed to Pards. Lambert, fonte and a few others were however stellar buys for us but hardly unknowns.

Professor Posted 12 May, 2012 Share Posted 12 May, 2012 No way. Nige knocks spots off him. Hard to see the basis for this other than blind loyalty. If its results on the field, Pardew's team has got 67 pts from 37 games. Nige got 72 points from 37 games but Pardew's team did that in a more difficult league. I can only think that it must be Nigel's media interview style that puts him ahead of Pardew.

Blind loyalty maybe but also look at the win stats which shows Adkins to have done better than Pardew. Throw in the facts that Adkins won 2 promotions on the spin. The first was after taking over a team in mid September in 20th position whilst the second came in a season where we were never out of the top 2. I don't want to decry Pardew who did a lot of good for us but Nigel 's achievements are immense. Nigel's successes have been accompanied with a great style of football. If nothing else, Plan B does exist for Nigel when it was often non existent for Pardew. We are very lucky to have Nigel as our manager.Pardew was good for us but I much prefer Adkins. Faz Posted 12 May, 2012 Share Posted 12 May, 2012 I see him as an old fashioned manager. He buys well, gives the team a shape, and then lets them play. If it goes wrong its because the players weren't good enough, or they didn't play to orders. Our Nige is more of a modern coach imo. Nige will tinker with the shape, and can affect the game in progress by tactical nouse. He will make good players better. Nige is the Wenger to Pardews Redknap. beatlesaint Posted 12 May, 2012 Share Posted 12 May, 2012 Congrats to him, done a hell of a job up there. He certainly started us on this journey, always remember him saying the players had forgotten how to win, looking at that first line up he had to pick I doubt if some of them had ever won to be honest. He gave them a winning mentality, bought in some great players to get us going and gave us a great day out, and win, at Wembley for which I will always applaud him on his return to Southampton. Just hope he goes away with nil point !

terry hurlock Posted 14 May, 2012 Share Posted 14 May, 2012 Pardew built the bus and Adkins is the driver. If pardew joined us a few weeks earlier then I think we would've had a better start to the 09-10 season and actually made the play offs and got out of league one at our first attempt. Remember we were a better team than Norwich who actually won the league. Paul lambert said we were the best opposition that year by far. The -10 points was the killer. Pardew would have taken us to the premiership. No doubt.

Frank's cousin Posted 15 May, 2012 Share Posted 15 May, 2012 Good manager, bit of an ego, and did well for us... but always thought he might be off the moment someone bigger came calling - so not sure he would still have been here anyway had he got us promoted - whatever the issue with NC, It was right to terminate, if it was irreconcilable as it would have just festered.
