Liquidshokk Posted 10 May, 2012 Posted 10 May, 2012 Just wondering if anyone on here owns a kayak and can advise on which one to choose and transporting it. I've hired Kayaks a few times before but now want to take the punt and own one. Know I need to get roof bars for my car but is there anything to watch out for when buying them or anything extra needed to hold the Kayaks down on them?! Also if anyone can suggest a cheap first option for the Kayak itself that would be a great help. Found a starter kit in Towsure for 300 quid inc life jacket, oars and splashback. Did consider the inflatable kayak but heard too many horror stories of people sinking!
Saint-scooby Posted 10 May, 2012 Posted 10 May, 2012 I have a Ocean kayak single seat, great fun, try BHG in Lymington These are not designed for long distance paddeling Ps avoid the blow up ones unless your friends and family like dressing in black.

hamster Posted 10 May, 2012 Posted 10 May, 2012 My mate and his son bought one each last year, don't think theyve been out in them yet. I'll enquire but don't hold yer breath as he's a right tight arse git.

Cheers. Looking to potter about in rivers around Hampshire initially. Only really been on Beaulieu river and rivers abroad so far Would love to one day go down the white water river lyn but some way off being able to handle that yet!

hamster Posted 10 May, 2012 Posted 10 May, 2012 I was treated to a white water experiencxe a few years ago. We went to Llangollen (sp) at the national centre, it was brilliant. They do rafts or kayaks and are a really nice bunch. .I'd recomend it to anyone.

I did white water rafting in New Zealand in March, was great fun. Grade 3 and whilst calm and tranquil in places, through the rapids was crazy. Proper adrenalin rush. I think I read that the river lyn is grade 5-6 so must be amazing Might have to look up Llangollen, cheers.
hamster Posted 18 May, 2012 Posted 18 May, 2012 Precepinon mirage. Red. Don't know age. £300 Ono. My mate not me.
Manuel Posted 18 May, 2012 Posted 18 May, 2012 Ocean Kayak Frenzy is a very good stable single seater all rounder which I'd recommend. I have one. This sort of strap is fine on your roof bars, looped round like this guy has. I wouldn't go for the ratchet types as you can over tighten and deform your kayak.

Very much doubt the River Lyn is 5-6 though as that is pretty much certain death rapids. Cant imagine there will be much in the UK above grade 3. When i first moved down here I joined the New Forest Canoe and Kayak club who were really helpful and have cheap kit to hire for about £10 per day all in. Sure someone there would be happy to give advice.
