Would you take 4th from bottom next season now?

Let's be honest. Staying up would be a good season

Would agree with that, although exceptions seem a bit skewed on this thread. With our current squad as it is with no additions we would struggle, just as we struggled at places like Blackpool, Cardiff and M'boro......times that by 1000.

We will add though, that's obvious, but still...if we stay up next year I'd take that. Then progress further the year after.

I think many on here are going get a huge reality check in the new season...all this talk of champions league stuff is mental

I would be very happy just to stay in the Premier league next season but I have this little feeling that our Nigel and probably some of the players will be dreaming and planning on winning it!!! I am going to say it, I think Adkins will surprise us again next season. I think he is something special.

no way, mid table would be a fair result.

got to get off to a good start ,win at home games & go for draws on the road.it can be done, dont need to spend loads of money norwich ,swansea has had good results on a small budget.

just need the 12th man to get behind the team. it will be good to see saints on 'Match of the day' again,

should be a good buzz around southampton come the the first game back in the premiership ,with packed matchday pubs cant wait

Before seeing what happens in the transfer wndow... as a caveat.. think we should be targeting 14th and higher... got to set a high standard and keep the momentum going

I think you are right to target 14th and I think we should too but given the chance of a guaranteed 17th I'd take that for sure. It's only 3 places lower and no risk of relegation.

I bet if this deal was offered to all the clubs in the prem, only clubs consistently finishing in the top 10 would refuse. I'm pretty sure fulham, Wigan etc would bite your arm off. QPR spent a fortune this year and look at villa, both could still go down mathematically. Promotion survival will not be a walk in the park even if we make some great signings.

4th from bottom would mean a dreadful season with relegation fears for most of the time. That is not the plan.

This thread is a magical one. Having a guaranteed 17th spot. It's not whether we would be happy with 17th as I'm sure a lot of us wouldn't.

I think that's the plan for 75% of the teams in the PL

Priority one is don't get relegated for most of the clubs in the PL realisticly the title and a champions league spot is an unatainable goal most important thing is not to fall off the PL gravy train even if that means finishing 4th from bottom.

Just thought I would show people what finishing 17th normally means

2010-11 - Wolves finish 17th, next year they were gone

2009-10 - West Ham finish 17th, next year they were gone

2008-08 - Hull finish 17th, next year they were gone

2007-09 - Fulham finish 17th, next season they finished 7th

2006-07 - Wigan finish 17th, following year they finish 14th.

2005-06 - Skates finish 17th, next year they finish 9th.

2004-05 - West Brom finish 17th, next year they were gone.

2003-04 - Everton finish 17th, next year they finish 4th.

2002-03 - Bolton finish 17th, next year they finish 8th.

2001-02 - Sunderland finish 17th, next year they were gone.

Of the past 10 teams to finish 17th 50% did not survive the following season. So while some teams have pushed on from there such as Everton and Fulham the others have struggled with Bolton possibly going down this year.

So that stat shows it is indeed possible to push on, but it is also possible to go the other way and not improve. A 50% relegation rate the following season is pretty bad. I imagine the other places are nowhere near that high.

If we look at our stadium average and put it into the pl table we would be around 12th. Next year it will be higher then that. We will have a similar attendance to Everton and only a few thousand less then Spurs. We should at the very least be aiming for mid-table around 10th to 14th in my opinion. But it all boils down to our squad, if we don't add to it then we will struggle. If we get some quality players in then who knows.

Of those, 2 out of ten are newly promoted sides. They both went the season after. Bradford did the same.

Wouldn't be a good omen, I grant you that but remember also the examples of Birmingham, Reading and Ipswich in recent times. More then safe in their first season then down. (Ipswich came 5th for pities sake!!!)

Dear other PL team fans who may now be browsing this forum.

Unfortunately as we have been away for some 7 years now you will not have any experience of how many in jokes we have developed in that time.

Quite a few of our new found friends we have made on our really enjoyable travels around the country have understood and joined in.

However, before you all go and rush off and assume we have already booked a Boat Cruise to celebrate our qualification for the Champions League next season you REALLY should go and read a few more threads first.

Thanks for popping by and don't worry, soon even you will understand The Nuns

You of course are 99.9999999% likely to be correct. What I said was knowing Adkins and how positive he is he will probably be planning for and dreaming of winning the league. He is a special manager and I do not think he will be planning on just surviving. It is not how he thinks.

Doesnt mean I wouldnt be more than happy to stay in the division, was just paying tribute to our manager.

Depends on what we do in the summer and also how the season goes. It may be that we don't get in that calibre of player that is needed and end up lower-mid table for most of the season, in which case I would take 17th.

However, I think it's pretty clear that this is a club with ambition, and i'm sure it won't be anyone's ambition to finish 17th next year. I can see us finishing 10th-15th.

Stupid question, unless you're an armchair fan IMO. If I thought we were just aiming at mere survival from day one I don't think I would bother going to watch football atall - what the hell is the point unless you're challenging to win every freaking game?!?! I don't believe for one minute anyone at the club is planning to put the club into a position of fourth bottom - so why should any supporter? Simple answer - NO!

I'm presently feeling we wil be around 12th-14th-ish.

So, I reckon we will avoid the bottom three with room to spare.

But the most important thing is staying up, not my random guess that we should stay up with a few places to spare.

So, yes, I'd take 17th right now, no question.

I think we are better than 17th. I would hope for 10-12th, possibly more, possibly less.

However, being 18-20 would be a disaster and I do not think i could stand it. Not again, not yet. Please god no. No no no no no.

So yes, i would take 17th now, give up on the more likely but less important benefits of being higher, but insuring against the less likely absolute disater of relegation. A bit like house insurance really - a little bit of money chucked away on the off-chance you need protection agaisnt a disaster.

But then nobody will offer us 17th, so i am happy to take our chances.

Looking at it objectively - can we finish higher than Reading? Yes. Wigan? Yes. I think both Swansea and Norwich will suffer second season syndrome - certainly with Sigurdsson probably moving on, so I say Yes to both of them. With one of Bolton/QPR, West Brom and one of West Ham/Blackpool in the league as well, I don't aiming our sights toward being above these teams is either over ambitious nor unrealistic. I'd like to think we can finish somewhere 12-16th as others have suggested. 17th would do if it all goes t!ts up and anything about 12th would be a bonus.

After two seasons of finishing second I think its time we kicked on and finished higher. Therefore anything less than first should be seen as a failure and lead to Cortese and Adkins resigning.

My first reaction was yes take it.

But after a few mins and the posts of St. Marco & Stattmeister, I'm now firmly in the no camp. Good work gents my position has been changed by the strength of your arguement!

Of course a lot does depend on what we do in term of signings over the summer, but had 3 hopefully 4 players who are better than we currently have and we should expect 12th - 16th.

No. Definitely not.

I would rather us fight for everything we can and lose, than accept a low position in advance. But in reality I expect us to finish at the higher end of the bottom half, somewhere 12th-16th perhaps.

Yep agree with this at the moment, don't expect relegation but there may be a scare along the way.
