doggface Posted 10 May, 2012 Posted 10 May, 2012 As the title really... I know cortese would probably have much higher aspirations which will be interesting to manage, would you take it right now if offered or are we/will be better than that? Me.... Through gritted teeth, yes I would I guess years of prem struggle are bred into me by now!
Saint_clark Posted 10 May, 2012 Posted 10 May, 2012 No, as I believe we won't be in a relegation fight next year.
Alanh Posted 10 May, 2012 Posted 10 May, 2012 Based on seeing what Norwich and Swansea did this season and having seen how NA prepares the team through pre season I'd say no to your question. I think we should be able to be better than 7 or 8 other teams in the Prem next season.
Window Cleaner Posted 10 May, 2012 Posted 10 May, 2012 well I'd have to wait until Nicola tells me the full details of the new 5 year plan.I mean I might take 4th from bottom yes but he might get p*ssed off about it,sack the manager and sell all of the players.
sfcuk fan Posted 10 May, 2012 Posted 10 May, 2012 . Not a chance, don't be such a defeatist. Go sit in the corner and spank yourself. We can do better than that ! .
doggface Posted 10 May, 2012 Author Posted 10 May, 2012 Mixed opinions as expected! I realistically think we can achieve anywhere from 10th-20th. Yeah I know that's a real bold prediction ; ) I think there will be a lot of change this year, formations, tactics, players, ambition and of course superior opposition. We have been out of the league for a while now and things have changed. Easily our toughest task for years and will be interesting to see how it pans out.
Dark Munster Posted 10 May, 2012 Posted 10 May, 2012 You mean finish 17th? I think I know someone who would be content with that.
Dalek2003 Posted 10 May, 2012 Posted 10 May, 2012 Depends on who we sign over the summer. If we show modest ambition then 4th from bottom would be a success !
Sour Mash Posted 10 May, 2012 Posted 10 May, 2012 As the title really... Through gritted teeth, yes I would I guess years of prem struggle are bred into me by now! Considered I've been labelled on here "unambitious" etc, I'd definitely say "no", I think we are better than that and will strengthen over the seaon. Having said that, I think the Prem will be stronger in 2012/13 than it was this season just gone.
St Marco Posted 10 May, 2012 Posted 10 May, 2012 After watching teams like Norwich and Swansea do so well i'd say no. I don't see why we can't copy what they have done. We play a similar style of football. However.....on the flip side you have to be realistic. If we got into the top 10 and stayed there that would be just as good as our previous two seasons. We are never going to win the league but I think we need to be aiming for safe mid table next season. We have the squad and should add quality to it with our financial resources this summer, especially after the amount we will get for being in the league itself. It is going to be tough but I think we need to keep the whole progress thing going. Not sure a relegation fight would be considered too much progress?
Fitzhugh Fella Posted 10 May, 2012 Posted 10 May, 2012 Abso bloody lutely. That would be consolidation of the highest order plus another 40m in the coffers from the following season.
doggface Posted 10 May, 2012 Author Posted 10 May, 2012 Abso bloody lutely. That would be consolidation of the highest order plus another 40m in the coffers from the following season. Haha thought you might say that, but I would agree with you!
hypochondriac Posted 10 May, 2012 Posted 10 May, 2012 Too many unknowns at the moment to be certain about what is going to happen but at the moment I would be very happy with 17th. It would allow us to push on the next year and hopefully attract better players as a more established premiership side rather than a newly promoted one.
slickmick Posted 10 May, 2012 Posted 10 May, 2012 Depends on who we sign over the summer. If we show modest ambition then 4th from bottom would be a success ! You not going for 17th ?
DG Posted 10 May, 2012 Posted 10 May, 2012 (edited) Absolutely. (How about a poll?) Edited 10 May, 2012 by DG Added poll question
stev2001 Posted 10 May, 2012 Posted 10 May, 2012 There have been many teams with a much higher wage bills, bigger stadiums, higher attendances than ours who have been relegated from this league so while we are in a state of transistion I think 17th would be a great achievement. Once we have bought a few players and they have settled then we can start looking higher in the league as a goal. I'm not saying we can't do what Norwich has done this year or even better but I am also realistic that we could do what Newcastle did a few seasons back.
Lighthouse Posted 10 May, 2012 Posted 10 May, 2012 No, I think we're (or we will be after a few signings) a lot better than 17th. I'd be satisfied enough if that's where we finished, but I believe this team will be capable of a midtable finish. Finish 17th doesn't attract decent players for the following seasons and you end up like Hull or Wolves, being slowly dragged back down into the Championship with little real quality in your team. It would be a depressing season to watch too. Remember all the pain and misery of 04/05, it would basically just be all that again, but with 1 extra win.
Dalek2003 Posted 10 May, 2012 Posted 10 May, 2012 You not going for 17th ? I don't just pluck a figure out of the air you know ! I will make my prediction in early August based on how we go about strengthening the team. We were woeful last summer and we were lucky to get away with it !
SNSUN Posted 10 May, 2012 Posted 10 May, 2012 With the team as it is? Yes, I'd bite your hand off. After a summer of transfer activity? Probably not. But if it meant we could continue to rebuild the team to make us a force in the Premiership, then yes. Look at Newcastle, while they had more of a Premiership core of players than we do, less than two seasons after promotion they have a team fighting for third place with some quality players in their team.
Dr Who? Posted 10 May, 2012 Posted 10 May, 2012 I don't just pluck a figure out of the air you know ! I will make my prediction in early August based on how we go about strengthening the team. We were woeful last summer and we were lucky to get away with it ! Of course we were! I see you are preparing yourself for the worse again? I was settling for mid table last season and we went up. I am going for 13th as it stands.
supergoose Posted 10 May, 2012 Posted 10 May, 2012 I'll go with whatever Dalek says. He was spot on last season.
It's There Posted 10 May, 2012 Posted 10 May, 2012 NO. We are there to compete- we aim high- the team will learn and progress. We will not settle for mediocre (ie 17th!) I full expect us to be pushing for a top 10 finish and will be disappointed if we're lower than 15th...and I don't care if the Prem is considered stronger- we must be better then and prove we deserve to be at the top table.
RobM Posted 10 May, 2012 Posted 10 May, 2012 No. Definitely not. I would rather us fight for everything we can and lose, than accept a low position in advance. But in reality I expect us to finish at the higher end of the bottom half, somewhere 12th-16th perhaps.
CB Fry Posted 10 May, 2012 Posted 10 May, 2012 Would be a reasonable start. Not sure it would excite our gigantic catchment area though.
BallBoy Posted 10 May, 2012 Posted 10 May, 2012 No. What we have to preserve more than anything is our momentum. 17th place would leave us struggling to attract players and to compete for seasons to come. I am a realist but I believe Cortese, Liebherr and Adkins have a higher vision. 17th place would define us as strugglers.
Cabrone Posted 10 May, 2012 Posted 10 May, 2012 Yes absolutely. We need to remember that we were playing in league 1 only 12 short months ago so to be able to consolidate in the prem just 2 years later would be a great achievement. I'm starting off with the aspiration of survival and anything more is a bonus. Signings should give us a better idea of how we may do.
doddisalegend Posted 10 May, 2012 Posted 10 May, 2012 I don't care if we're relegated to be honest......the football league isn't the terrible place I thought it was last time we fell out of the PL. I'd be quite happy to win a cup and be relegated but to be honest I can see us doing something similair to Norwich or Swansea.
stev2001 Posted 10 May, 2012 Posted 10 May, 2012 No. What we have to preserve more than anything is our momentum. 17th place would leave us struggling to attract players and to compete for seasons to come. I am a realist but I believe Cortese, Liebherr and Adkins have a higher vision. 17th place would define us as strugglers. We are going to have some major changes this season as most of our current squad haven't played in the prem, all our new signings need to fit in and start playing as a team. We will be up against well established prem teams or teams that have a season or two head start on us. I'm not sure why finishing 17th wouldn't be a great starting point for us to push on from and I don't think in our first season would show we are struggling?
Colinjb Posted 10 May, 2012 Posted 10 May, 2012 Not a chance, don't be such a defeatist. Go sit in the corner and spank yourself. Coo, what an offer!!
ericofarabia Posted 10 May, 2012 Posted 10 May, 2012 No. Definitely not. I would rather us fight for everything we can and lose, than accept a low position in advance. But in reality I expect us to finish at the higher end of the bottom half, somewhere 12th-16th perhaps. This is a better target for me. I dread to think what the wrist slitting and name calling would be like on here if we lose as many games as you need to to finish in 17th or lower!!
Frank's cousin Posted 10 May, 2012 Posted 10 May, 2012 NO Kind of defeats the object of taking part really. I think the side we have now could have scraped 4th from bottom with luck in the prem.. so it would not be progress IMHO

I think the side we have now could have scraped 4th from bottom with luck in the prem.. so it would not be progress IMHO But this thread is about taking guaranteed survival if it meant finishing 17th or is everyone voting no really that confident we will definitely finish 16th or above?
stev2001 Posted 10 May, 2012 Posted 10 May, 2012 No but Id take it this season! We are not in the prem this season?
Frank's cousin Posted 10 May, 2012 Posted 10 May, 2012 But this thread is about taking guaranteed survival if it meant finishing 17th or is everyone voting no really that confident we will definitely finish 16th or above? Before seeing what happens in the transfer wndow... as a caveat.. think we should be targeting 14th and higher... got to set a high standard and keep the momentum going
Thedelldays Posted 10 May, 2012 Posted 10 May, 2012 Let's be honest. Staying up would be a good season
Ziggy Posted 10 May, 2012 Posted 10 May, 2012 I have got used to finishing second so that's what I would like. Seriously between eighth and twelfth would be a fantastic achievement.
