Why are left wingers so unfunny?

I'd say most of the decent comedy for years has been left wing. The only right wing "comedy" I can think of off-hand would be Jim Davidson and Jeremy Clarkson.

As for left wing comedy off the top of my head:

Stewart Lee

George Carlin

Bill Hicks

Bill Maher

Eddie Izzard

Richard Herring

Alexei Sayle

Jeremy Hardy

Chris Morris

Mark Thomas

Mark Steel

plus just about every bit of satirical comedy in the eighties.

I have no problem with liking a comedian who is left-wing. However I find 'left-wing humour' hard to take - people whose 'message' is more important than the actually comedy itself. I find Mark Steele, Bill Maher, Alexei Sayle, Chris Morris and Ben Elton to be especially irritating.

In addition the main targets of these 'comedians' to be people who hold the same views as myself, and politicians that I admire. I can take a joke, but it does get a bit tiresome.

George Carlin was different. He was of a different time, when conservative America really did call the shots, kids were being drafted into the Vietnam War and racial inequality was rife. He picked on the strong, the powerful and the rich. He was gentle and intelligent. And fun.

It's a much more liberal world now. Today's left-wing comedians strike me as mostly nasty, spiteful spoiled little brats.

I'm sorry to go off topic, but has anyone else noticed that Eric is getting just a little bit cocky these days?

I don't think he was cocky before now, so I am assuming he recently had a largish infusion of cock sometime recently! :)

Dune of course has not been cocky for a while on this thread, so maybe he has lost it. Maybe given his cock away?

Oh! Maybe he gave it to Eric! That would explain everything!

Dune gave Eric his cock, and now Eric is full of Dune's cock!

OK, Sorry guys, now I'm just being offensive...................Or just a little cocky?.......Hmmmm, is that you again, Dune?

You just don't agree with the politics, that's all. If the target were more to your liking you would think it funny.

How is this hard to understand? Comedy is subjective. Left wing comedy is funny to left wingers, and right wing comedy is funny to racist paedophiles.

See what I did there? It was comedy! ;)

Not so sure I would. I think mediocre comedy is mediocre no matter what. And I am not a racist paedophile. I treat all paedophiles equally regardless of race colour or creed.

I can see why you'd find some you list irritating, but that doesn't mean they're not funny. Elton's influence was all over the Blackadder series beyond the first, and that show was excellent for its time. He was also involved in the Young Ones, another massively influential show - so many sitcoms that followed riffed on the "anything can happen" angle.

I like most people on that list. Bill Hicks is my all-time fav, and I loved that he had something to say. I'm not really onboard with the idea of comedy as a politically inert thing. It can be, but a wry joke can have more impact on public opinion than an essay.

What do people remember about John Prescott? Two Jags, or two jabs :) Ok, the fact that he punched an assailant does come into it, but the joke stuck in the public mind better than any of the analyses produced at the time.

Take it any way you like, do people really think that humour not pandering to their political sway is less/more funny? If this is the way people think, then the problem lies not with the humour, but with oneself.

If you can ridicule yourself, then maybe you can find humour wherever it exists. If you cannot ridicule yourself, then you will most likely only find humour in the misfortune of others.

Oh c'mon Eric! You know it wasn't personal! I was using you as a tool! You know! To get at Dune!

I was just using you as a tool, a pliant bendy tool that I could manipulate to form a firm, long dagger to thrust into Dune, over and over, thrust, thrust thrust. sticking you into Dune over and over like a long firm meat dagger, thrust thrust thrust!!! Until we all fall into a heap on the floor, spent and flacid, like a well used dish rag.

Sometimes, Eric, I think you are just too sensitive. Which, of course can be a good thing.

I trust your opinion because you wear a top hat and use a manacle.

Quite right too, my man. Now doff that cap, there's a good fellow. I prefer my manacles in pairs, but I don't like to make a spectacle of myself.

I seem to remember, not so very many years ago, a number of comedians and others many of who would probably be left-of-centre, making a huge fuss about humour that wasn't "politically correct" - that is "humour not pandering to their political sway" (and their influence is still with us). These include some of the comedians already mentioned in this thread. So you're saying they have a problem?

Personally, I've never found "ridiculing" anyone to be very funny. It's easy and it's cheap, but it's seldom witty.

He's Dead... so you may need You tube... but you wont like him he's Left Wing and lets the Repubicans know it...

I think he'll like him. Hicks was left wing but was so much more than that. JJ has already stated his like of George Carlin. ("George Carlin was different. He was of a different time, when conservative America really did call the shots, kids were being drafted into the Vietnam War and racial inequality was rife. Ok, Hicks wasn't exactly gentle, but he was a shed load of fun.

Lefties are boring and spectacularly unfunny/non-humourous because they tend to be pompous, superior, arrogant, condescending and above all, utter, utter HYPOCRITES.

Have you never heard the saying 'people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones'?

Yes, but I dont consider myself to be any of those.

I would consider myself to be impatient and a little insecure, neither of which has any sort of correlation to the left-wing characteristics I listed above.

For examples of the personality trait I've listed in left-wingers, you need look no further than the likes of George Galloway and Polly Toynbee.

And from that, and the OP, it's safe to assume that you and Dune are masters of the sweeping generalisation.

I couldn't agree with you more about Galloway. The irony, of course, being that he calls his party Respect but if you've ever listened to his radio phone-in show he is actually the rudest and most disrespectful tvv@t you could ever imagine.

But how do you come to the conclusion that anybody who considers themselves 'on the left' (whatever that actual means in this day and age) shares the same characteristics? Honestly I would like to know how you can justify such a ridiculous sweeping generalisation. I try not to get involved in the left/right arguments on here and other forums but it is my observation that people on the right tend to be the ones most often applying irrational stereotypes and your post is one of the most spectacular examples of that I have ever read.

... A Tory, Liberal Democrat, Socilaist, Communist and humanist are all stranded on a deserted island. They also have 5 buckets. One bucket is full to the brim of the only fresh water they have.

The Socialist suggests they divide the water equally and and each get their own share, the communist agrees but suggests that as he is taller and heavier that the others his share should be slightly more, the Liberal democrat has no idea what to do, but says we he will decide when he knows what everyone else is doing....

The humanist suggests that its not divided but each person should be given what they need when their thirst requires it and what is necessary to keep them alive - he also without saying so would give up some of his share to someone else in greater need or pain.

...meanwhile the Tory has fecked off and drank the lot.

am watching the Iron Lady right now

we simply have no one that comes close to her (or many from that era)

The old witch certainly had the Tory Party Conference in stitches when she parodied the Monty Python "Dead Parrot" sketch.

Unfortunately she hadn't the faintest idea why it was amusing. Humour was not one of her strong points.

He's an utter c*nt. Anyone who might not speak 'well' he just sneers at instead of actually listening to what they're saying.

One thing you 'gotta give him though- he knows how to fire up a crowd of muslims.

That could also apply to Osborne and Cameron.

I do find this 'dominant/controlling woman' fetish that a lot of right-wingers have really rather odd.

Not really when you think about it... all that 'discipline' at school and at home, authority figures, 'fagging' for the six formers etc... oh and dont forget matron...

Some people don't like Chris Morris. He does push boundaries, and that means pushing buttons a lot of the time.

Personally, I think we're lucky to have someone with such balls working in film and telly.
