Defining moment of the season

I remember the fury it created on here before.

In the end it meant very little, and it was just a case of a chairman wanting a bit of the limelight..! I don't think he'll ever do it again though.

(the image on that page has the wrong programme displaying though...)

Personally I don't think he was seeking the limelight. He was badly advised. Did not see anything wrong in it myself (did not see too many Wednesday fans complain about Milan taking the limelight on Saturday). But it's not his natural style so it looked forced to me.

For me though, the defining moment of the season was the shrewd January transfer dealings. Hooiveld, Sharp and Lee all good acquisitions and made a real impact on the run in.

Was looking back through photos on my phone and was reminded of this...

What a bloody legend. I would be tempted to say that all of our success this season has been a direct result of this programme cover.

I bloody love Cortese, this pretty much typifies why.

Just in case anyone starts treating this seriously, I wanna get in early and say the second penalty at Millwall.

I absolutely agree. Felt at the time it was our 'MK Dons' moment for this season, if you know what I mean...

1) I like his lack of concern for anyone else's opinion. He does what he wants, and he wants the best for Saints.

2) I think it looks good.

Would you not agree that his head looks too big for his body (possibly the camera angle)?

We hear from him about twice a season of we are lucky

When he put himself in the front cover, that was one of the best ways to get his message out to a large audience

That programme was one of the best selling apparently, so people want to hear from him

All the other chairman upon promotion have had ther say live on telly or the radio. The Blackpool chairman was on talks sport earlier.... Nothing from ours and if he did, the usual lot would go mental

Agree -he's been utterly discrete in his dealings. Ironically people want to hear more from him not less.

When he marches out with the matchball and places it on the centre circle like Madjeski did at Reading then we should start to worry.

Oh if you want to join in a good Cortese slagging session start a thread on UI they have some right nut jobs on there.

Cant see what the fuss is about - I couldn't give a flying feck about any chairman self promoting, doing whatever they like publically, if what they are doing behind the scenes sees such rapid progress and development. FWIW, I dont think in this case is was abour 'self' promotion - more about a statemet of intent - 'I am in charge, this is what I have to say, we are doing it this way and we will succeed' - message seemed to get through.

1) It's very distasteful to self promote like that.

2) The actual photo makes him look like a poison dwarf.

Not disagreeing necessarily - although I'd think it was ill advised rather than ego-driven self-promotion but think back - have we ever had a chairman, board or executive who has achieved so much so quietly?

I love the way we do business these days, no bullsh itty Redcr*p style press mutterings, no Lowe 'look at me' statements - things just happen and we know about them when they are announced - that's professional - let the other clubs just wish that they worked like we do.

Couldnt give a shiny one about that programme cover, even if his intention was to self-promote.

He can self promote as much as he likes as far as I am concerned; he can even "self-promote" himself with a large tub of peanut butter in the centre circle before our first home game of next season if he wants, since he is delivering results and success.

This was one of the more annoying things about He Who Must Not Be Named - he self-promoted even while driving the club into the ground. But then he is a real "self-promoter" from a business full of "self-promoters"

Well I guess that might put off a few of the 'clown dressers' and families with kids;)

For Me Reading at Home... had we won that with all our pocession' date=' we would would have been Champions IMHO. Promotion never in doubt;)[/quote']

I was very disappointed to lose against Reading. I must admit thought after that we might even have blown promotion. So for me that Tuesday night at Peterborough, were the team picked themselves up and got that 3-1 win was a very big moment for me. Other big moments I think defined our season have been mentioned already. Leeds away, Super Kelvin Davis performance getting us 3 massive points. Its worth noting it was against a Leeds side buzzing with new manager syndrome and we were on TV, so there was alot to over come. Plus Millwall away. I still am not sure how we won that. Millwall always seem to raise their game against us and they did again that day. Why their player handballed the cross from the corner, I do not know but I'm so glad he did :)

Leeds away and Millwall away were the defining moments for me. We weren't particularly great and managed to get 6 points. Teams that can do that often do well.

I wonder what the defining moment of next season could be. A late Lambert bullet header at Old Trafford away perhaps?

I quite agree, but that doesn't mean he's a "god" and above criticism when criticism is deserved.

I quite liked the cover too. Cortese fortunately is not just about front, he has a lot of competence to back it up with too.

Anyway I always felt it was done to give the impression of how negotiations were made on the OXC deal. I think the details were announced either just before or just after.

"15m Arsene, no more no less". I don't think any of us expected Cortese would get that much for him.

I still hate that programme cover with a passion. I also vaguely recall that I may have said on the original thread (which also has me at my most furious for the first 2 pages) that we'd need to win the Champions League before I'd be ok with him doing stuff like that. His fan policies are still rubbish, FWIW, and there's little or no "business" reason for quite a few of them. We're certainly not "self-sufficient" as a result, but whilst the team is doing well, no-one's going to dare criticise that.

On the pitch, great stuff. Off the pitch, still needs work.

As for "defining moment" ? We came second, which was mostly due to Reading's inexplicable win at St Mary's. So that.

I knew we were good by the time we'd played Barnsley away, I knew we could go up when we beat West Ham and dominated Middlesbrough. I was confident we'd go up when I remembered Coventry were complete pants, about 10 minutes after West Ham beat Leicester.

Though I suspect a lot of people are only going to remember David bloody Norris and his chip-p15sing flukiness.

The Cortese/Adkins axis is doing very well indeed, thank you.

The defining game of season was, I think, Leeds away.

Blood and thunder, 11 back at times, players chucking themselves into challenges to keep Leeds out all roared on by our magnificent away fans.

Super Kelvin Davis!

Cardiff game at home - had we lost, they would have leapfrogged us and we would have dropped out of the top 2 for the first time this season. Our first real 6 pointer and bang in the middle of our blip. 1 down at half time, could have been more had Kenny Miller been less wasteful. We got an equaliser and saw the game out. Only a point but it did stopped the rot and helped kickstart a run in form.

That was such an heroic moment, that picture is just immense. Watch it in full flow too....we must block that ball 6 or 7 times. Awesome will to win.

There were many moments in individual games (Leeds away, Millwall away etc) which were really important.

I however think the key period was pre-season. The players started the season fit (Lambert in particular) and with a style of playing they had worked on in pre-season that served us so well for the first 3-4 months of the season, and the lead we established in the League in those months gave us the scope to lose a few games later in the season.

It was just fantastic to start the season as we did, when we are usually utterly hopeless at the start of the season. If we can get a few wins at the start of next season, it will be such a boost for the whole season and will keep the feelgood factor going.

I'd completely forgotten about that match - and it looks incredibly significant in hindsight! At the time I've got to admit I'd more or less let go of the autos given our run!

I agree with Shurlock, the second half of the Cardiff game at home,to me was pivotal. The second half we came out all guns blazing and with a decent referee would have had another two [ stonewall ] penalties. That 45 minutes, was the first time for a couple of months that we had played the way we had before Chaploiw's injury at Bristol City.

Back to the original question:

There were lots of defining moments because no single point actually counts more than another but here are 3 from me.

1) Dean Hammond scoring the 1st goal in the Championship. Leeds were regarded as favourites and that moment helped us all believe we were good enough.

2) Dean Hammond again in the derby against Portsmouth. He was intelligent enough to show the linesman that the ball had come off a Pompey player so the goal could be allowed despite Sharp being "offside". He was not abusive but made the point. Goal allowed and cue rapture. It was shortly followed by despair but point gained.

3) The 15-20 minutes in the 2nd half when Kelvin Davis held off Leeds almost single handedly. That's the best goalkeeping "performance" I have ever seen and contributed to a rare smash and grab. Every team needs them.

Just 3 moments from an absolutely fantastic season.

This is a very fair point. A lot of people were saying Adkins hadn't been tested in the transfer market, did he have what it takes to find those to push us on. Apart from that brown paper bag he must have received from Iago Falque's Dad, he got it spot on with the three mentioned above. They can all play a role next season too.

Think the defining point of the season was Dec, Jan & Feb when we were not playing to our earlier exceptional standards of the season, but managed to grind out enough points to keep us in the top 2.

Defining game as others have said any one from 3, Leeds, Millwall or Peterborough away.

Toss up between this and Millwall away. Seeing as I wasn't at Millwall, I'm going to say Leeds. 2nd half support was ****ing brilliant - goes down as one of my top 5 aways.
