I wouldn't get too excited...i see and do these kind of masterplan exercises all the time...they rarely come to fruition...and if they do..it's years and years and years down the line and invariably ends up looking nothing like what is proposed early on.

The document doesn't make sense.

On the one hand it talks about aggregates companies using the waterside and not being available for development, and then shows precisely that??

It says its safeguarded until 2030, but if an aternative site can be found then they can be relocated sooner

Indeed, just look at the skates plans a few years ago for their waterside mega stadium, transport interchange & hotel complex! How's that coming along

I used to work on Town Depot for Southampton City Council. Most of the site is now going to be demolished as most of the departments have been moved elswhere. However, part of the site will be used by Southampton City Council for 2 more years i gather, so nothing will happen untill after then. The rumour was a couple of years back that a Ski dome was going to be built on the site encompassing the area leased by Travis Perkins and the businesses in Ryde terrace. A couple of things also to mention about Town depot. The land is contaminated so it has to remain disused for a period of time also there are some old brickworks under the site that date back to the 17th century so whether this has the potential to hold things up i do not know. There is also rumours of tunnels under the site that lead up to St Michaels church, this may or may not be true, i can't find them documented anywhere. The land also needs to be raised as it has flooded in the past whilst there has been high tides. Take all of these things into account and you will see that nothing will happen anytime soon (years).

I reckon the reason the secret tunnels are not documented is because they're, you know, secret.

:suspicious:

Gotcha - where else would they go though? Presumably they need water or they wouldn't be there??

Well, as it's sea dredged aggregates, i can't see them wanting to relocate in land, and where else can they get what they have here? Hansons and Tarmac are even considering EXPANDING on the site of the old TV station.

Tarmac will merge with Lafarge in the next 6 months and have been told that they must sell off parts of their business by the monopolies commision, just a though that the Tarmac area here could be involved?

Cemex office area and buildings ( which take up a large area ) are almost empty as many staff there have been made redundant over the last couple of years.

However, can't see Hanson or Cemex wanting to give up there water front aggregates areas.
