Master Bates Posted 11 November, 2008 Share Posted 11 November, 2008 Welcome to the future. Here is Dubai over the years. Dubai in 1990 prior to the craziness The same street in 2003 Last year The madness. Dubai is said to currently have 15-25% of all the world’s cranes. The Dubai Waterfront. When completed it will become the largest waterfront development in the world. All of this was built in the last 5 years, including that island that looks like a palm tree. The Palm Islands in Dubai. New Dutch dredging technology was used to create these massive man made islands. They are the largest artificial islands in the world and can be seen from space. Three of these Palms will be made with the last one being the largest of them all. Upon completion, the resort will have 2,000 villas, 40 luxury hotels, shopping centers, movie theaters, and many other facilities. It is expected to support a population of approximately 500,000 people. It is advertised as being visible from the moon. The World Islands. 300 artificially created islands in the shape of the world. Each island will have an estimated cost of $25-30 million. The Burj al-Arab hotel in Dubai. The worlds tallest hotel. Considered the only ‘7 star’ hotel and the most luxurious hotel in the world. It stands on an artificial island in the sea.
Master Bates Posted 11 November, 2008 Author Share Posted 11 November, 2008 The Dubai Marina is an entirely man made development that will contain over 200 highrise buildings when finished. It will be home to some of the tallest residential structures in the world. The completed first phase of the project is shown. Most of the other high rise buildings will be finished by 2009-2010. The Dubai Mall will be the largest shopping mall in the world with over 9 million square feet of shopping and around 1000 stores. It will be completed in 2008. Ski Dubai, which is already open, is the largest indoor skiing facility in the world. This is a rendered image of another future indoor skiing facility that is being planned. Some of the tallest buildings in the world, such as Ocean Heights and The Princess Tower, which will be the largest residential building in the world at over a 100 stories, will line the Dubai Marina. The UAE Spaceport would be the first spaceport in the world if construction ever gets under way. I’m not joking… Some other other crazy sh*t… * The Dubai Metro system, once completed, will become the largest fully automated rail system in the world. * The Dubai World Central International Airport will become the largest airport in size when it is completed. It will also eventually become the busiest airport in the world, based on passenger volume. * There are more construction workers in Dubai than there are actual citizens. Bath Saint Posted 11 November, 2008 Share Posted 11 November, 2008 And the people who are building it... Business may be booming for Dubai, but Avdesh tells me he has not been paid since August and that many of his colleagues are working without proper papers. It is alleged that some companies take passports and "lose" them so workers cannot return home. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/4249223.stm

Those towers are all in a remarkable straight line, one well directed 747 launched at maximum speed ,would probably take out 3/4 of them. Just thinking aloud. ericofarabia Posted 12 November, 2008 Share Posted 12 November, 2008 What a soulless place that seems to be They failed to show my place ... which is of course partyville arizona 24/7 ... except when saints lose ... ) Dubai IS a great place to live, but day by day being riuned by chavvy Brits arriving here and acting like they are still in Skatesmuff or Chavsville where ever. LOL to add to the Biggest, fastest, longest etc Guiness Book of Records for Dubai look out for worst trading losses, car crashes, road deaths, and beers drunk per expat from a Uk city

dubai_phil Posted 12 November, 2008 Share Posted 12 November, 2008 I think Bates posts these when he gets p*ssed off that his BOSS comes down here instead of delegating the job to him. Get some up to date photos man, the villas in the Palm are sinking, you haven't even mentioned Meydan or Dubailand... Following from EoA's thread, the one thing about Dubai is that it shows the Brits at their best and worst. The new chav cr8p that is being imported to work in real estate or marketing, we think the new entry regs are that instead of a degree you need to have achieved 10 ASBO's. The best thing is how we Brits change when we are able to plan a BBQ three months in advance..... Then there's the women......... And EoA none of this ATC straight line rubbish - I'm flying on Sunday for some R&R in happy ending land (well golf & Xmas shopping really but hey!) oops btw the chick thinks it business in Hong Kong of course

Sad to say Eric, but isn't that the worst element of the British the world over..? Christ knows why they have to shout and mouth off as they do, but they will do it. I've always put it down to the everlasting class system, which still has a few generations to go before it dies out [and the Monarchy must disappear too, of course] and restrictive drinking hours, where everyone who can't control themselves normally, certainly can't control themselves, once they've been allowed endless beer time. Of course, the Europeans, who've never had this 10.30-11.30pm problem have always just popped out for a drink whenever the fancy took them. While Brits get it down like there's no tomorrow, and the familiar Brits abroad nature results.

The interesting bit will be how many of the "great plans" will actually now get built. They used international funds to do everything and - oops no money! Roman Posted 13 November, 2008 Share Posted 13 November, 2008 How quickly that part of the world has changed. In the 1960s, just as the petrodollars started rolling in, the emir of Abu Dhabi (just along the street from Dubai) did what all bedouin would do with their money: he stacked it in huge piles in a back room in his palace. He only stopped doing this when the rats started eating the 100 dollar bills. Then he 'invested' it with a number of fly-by-night characters posing world bankers, who were arguably even more ravenous than the rats. Somehow, in the end, something got built... dubai_phil Posted 15 November, 2008 Share Posted 15 November, 2008 (edited) I just got a blue question mark. Don't tease. Is it you? lol, just as I thought I had technology on here sorted, I can see the photo. Oh well, the jokes not quite as funny but it's the bloke driving the crane at 700m up http://www.flickriver.com/photos/86025776@N00/332918359 shame as the one I had almost inspires vertigo. Here's another on the right http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burj_Dubai It's +700 meters tall already and build entirely upon sand. Fortunately my place is 3.4kms away from it so even the bouncing bits shouldn't reach here when it gets too windy And no, I saw it being built, and have mates who have worked on it. I don't EVER want to go up there without a parachute Edited 15 November, 2008 by dubai_phil
Rory Posted 16 November, 2008 Share Posted 16 November, 2008 And the people who are building it... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/4249223.stm The Daily Mail did a fantastic article on the conditions construction workers are living in in Dubai a year or two ago. It really is shocking. Some of them have no way of escaping the country and have gone years without seeing their families.
