Pancake Posted 11 November, 2008 Share Posted 11 November, 2008 Stupid stupid women. She should have said "My daughter is young, would it be possible for a female driver", a perfectly sensible request IMHO, and then she wouldnt have got hersefl in the sh*t. Serves her right for being a daft and racist.
Robsk II Posted 11 November, 2008 Share Posted 11 November, 2008 Agreed. Whatever you say Scummer, it is prejudiced, simple as that, and if her daughter will get freaked by someone with a turban - and would prefer 'someone English', then she's clearly been raised with absurd racist views, simple as that. ****ing idiot, this woman. I can see why she got fired, quite right.
Hatch Posted 11 November, 2008 Share Posted 11 November, 2008 Agreed , she was right to be sacked. Also in The Sun, it mentions she is a former glamour model, so she obviously has high morals.
St Landrew Posted 11 November, 2008 Share Posted 11 November, 2008 Agree with comments from Robsk and Pancake I like the bit about the female operator apparently being uneducated, yet she had a perfectly good grasp of a racist attitude, and the, no doubt, university educated BBC female's gob ran away with her. I would suggest to that BBC woman, that if Asian people frighten her daughter, then she needs to introduce her to some, via her BBC World Service colleagues, and get the kid over a silly personal problem before it begins to cloud her life. Special K Posted 11 November, 2008 Share Posted 11 November, 2008 http://www.bbc.co.uk/bristol/content/articles/2008/09/24/presenters_feature.shtml I would, although i wouldn't send her out for a saturday night takeaway.
Crouchie's Lawyer Posted 11 November, 2008 Share Posted 11 November, 2008 I do not agree with what she said. It was completely wrong, as mentioned above, she should have just asked for a female driver. On a side note though. Is it not a breach of the DPA to pass her details onto the sun? The phone operator for the taxi firm obviously saw £ in her eyes otherwise why go to the Sun? Why not just speak with the BBC direct?

Good point StL, but I have to ask where the child got the fear from? It's amazing what kids overhear and construe as 'the family line of thought'! equalizer Posted 11 November, 2008 Share Posted 11 November, 2008 The BBC is not having a good time of it at the moment. http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/uk_national_entertainment/3837235.Sitcom_rapped_over__overdose__scene/ Still I doubt any kids were watching it as its such a sh!te sitcom anyway! Robsk II Posted 11 November, 2008 Share Posted 11 November, 2008 Well, maybe that. Not that sure though, to be honest. Not looking up to much these days. And Mike, freedom of choice? About what? Race? Then it is, by definition, racism. People have every right to make choices if the choice is reasonable, ie, asking for a woman driver for a young woman passenger. It's not, perhaps, ideal, even then, because it could be argued there is a judgement made about males generally in that - but most people would agree it is much more valid for that young woman to be uncomfortable in the sole presence of an unknown man - than just someone who happens to wear a turban. There's no basis in anything other than prejudice for such a choice to be made. If I went about saying "I only want to employ black females", I'm pretty sure that wouldn't be 'freedom of choice'. it would be sodding dtupid, simple as that. (admittedly she is stupid and could have phrased it better) If you don't classify her comments as racist, then I would like to exercise my freedom of choice to choose these words: You are a retarded f*ckwit (I may have been able to phrase that better) That woman was right to be sacked. When she said her daughter would be freaked out I thought she was talking about a 2 year old or something. Her daughter is 2 years away from being allowed to marry with permission yet has such little life experience she has never seen an Asian person? So clearly the best way to teach her daughter about the different nationalities and colours and religions she may find in this country, she does her best to avoid them all. Clearly racist, clearly stupid and I am glad she has been sacked. Hopefully someone slapped her on the way out as well.

benjii Posted 11 November, 2008 Share Posted 11 November, 2008 I think a sacking is very harsh, although I suppose she was making a personal call when she was supposed to be doing her job, but no doubt the BBC were scared of another ridiculous, pompous, disingenuous, shrill witch-hunt. In a 'normal' job a sacking would be very harsh, but I expect BBC Presenters have some sort of code of conduct written into their contracts, and this is what she had fallen foul of. Robsk II Posted 12 November, 2008 Share Posted 12 November, 2008 This PC mad crap gets bandied about far too often by the ight wingers who feel annoyed that they can no longer express their prejudice without fear of critical comment. We do not, for the most part, live in a world that's gone too far. There are isolated cases, but I actually have never met someone who is totally stupid about it. I've seen some silly points of view (someone my parents knew said the terms 'black coffee' and 'black as night' were racist - my parents, rightly, told her she was stupid, basically) but I still have no idea who in these councils actually makes these rules, because it certainly isn't people like me, and, according to half of you, I'm about as crazy PC mad as you can get. bridge too far Posted 12 November, 2008 Share Posted 12 November, 2008 I'm not keen on sharing a underground carriage with a fully bearded Muslim with a rucksack. Does that make me racist or just cautious? It makes you naive IMO. I sat next to a fully bearded Muslim in the underground last week. I think he was reading the Koran. I also think he may have been a trainee priest. It didn't bother me in the slightest TBH.
Robsk II Posted 12 November, 2008 Share Posted 12 November, 2008 At the end of the day, statistically speaking, a young male muslim with beard and rucksack in an underground carriage is more lilely than other demographics to blow himself up. Possibly. Yet the probability is so extremely low that is simply isn't worth talking about at all. I think people would be lying if certain negative thoughts didn't cross their mind, but it's about what we do with them. Rationalising things generally helps. You'd never get in a car if you were worried about crazy drivers, yet there is more chance of you dying that way than by a terrorist attack in this country. TopGun Posted 12 November, 2008 Share Posted 12 November, 2008 (edited) I'm not keen on sharing a underground carriage with a fully bearded Muslim with a rucksack. Does that make me racist or just cautious? It makes you sound more stupid than the woman at BBC Bristol. Many bearded muslims live in London and use the tube everyday along with every other commuter. In fact how would you even know who was in your tube train space at rush hour? Edited 12 November, 2008 by TopGun
