dubai_phil Posted 6 May, 2012 Share Posted 6 May, 2012 Got to get some for work. Apple are really sh1t down here, Apps market is very underdeveloped and their service is appalling. Galaxy S3 not coming here until you lot stop buying them en masse, but we need something to work from in the next 2 weeks. Suggestions? (Oh and we don't have rental contracts we just have to buy the things so ease of use for thick fingered tech dumbos who need email, the forum, fb, twitter skype and great pictures)

Colinjb Posted 7 May, 2012 Share Posted 7 May, 2012 The new HTC One S is very good, my housemate has one and he loves it. The HTC One X is one up from that and outstanding, startling quick. I personally like the Sony Xperia S, love the design, feels solid and utterly stunning screen. As quick as anything else on the market and over here quite reasonably priced. If you want the creme de la creme though wait for the Samsung Galaxy S3. I am a fan of the BlackBerry Bold 9900 too, but the lack of flash player in the browser was a deal breaker. dubai_phil Posted 7 May, 2012 Author Share Posted 7 May, 2012 HTC One X is in the shops here and cheaper than some of the older spec kit you guys have mentioned Thanks for the inputs will go check it out S3 won't be available here until at least July which is too far away and we have seen people having no end of problems even with Unlocked kit from Europe so that is a no go
Seaford Saint Posted 7 May, 2012 Share Posted 7 May, 2012 I am in the same category as you Phil....so my next phone is either a Samsung Galaxy note......but its a dual core processor or the S3 which has a quad core processor which should make it theoretically faster. Both phones have a screen that's bigger than my current HTC Desire. Then there is the issue of battery life..... Mind you the camera in a phone is becoming more important to me these days

SOTONS EAST SIDE Posted 8 May, 2012 Share Posted 8 May, 2012 Galaxy S3 spec is lower than the One X (1.4ghz compared to 1.5ghz), and while its a little thinner its design is a little bland. Screen is still oversaturated colour wise, and the camera is only a little better than the S2.
mdearlove Posted 8 May, 2012 Share Posted 8 May, 2012 One X or One S - depends on preference for size - the SGS3 is underwhelming anyway so you aren't missing out on much. Despite the hype, it is still playing catchup with the One X. They stuck a load of headline software features on there but opted to leave the screen as a pentile screen - cheap option. SOTONS EAST SIDE Posted 8 May, 2012 Share Posted 8 May, 2012 I'm allowed a phone upgrade any day now. I like the look of the Sony one but don't know much about smartphones. I'm pretty much reliant on iTunes, can't be bothered to switch, no problem with it, just want everything to work easily. Had an iPhone 4 for 2 years and there's nothing wrong with it, just seems silly not to accept a free phone upgrade. Might end the contract though, or even get a new phone and sell it. I don't especially care about having the latest phone. Mostly I just don't want to spend ages thinking about phones! I'm not especially pro or anti apple. Seems odd to me that people try to express their individuality by getting a phone only 50,000,000 people have rather than one 200,000,000 have. Most of the newest Smart phones can sync with itunes anyway!!
This Charming Man Posted 8 May, 2012 Share Posted 8 May, 2012 I'm also due for an upgrade. Can get one now but my contract expires in June. Was hoping the new iPhone5 would've been released then but the rumours suggest it's not coming out until October now. Nothing else really tickles my fancy at the moment so I'll probably wait for that. I do like HTC but their new phones are just too big, I have an iPad for when browsing the web at home so don't really need such a massive screen these days, plus they hammer your battery. dubai_phil Posted 9 May, 2012 Author Share Posted 9 May, 2012 No, why bother with a specific digital camera when most modern mobiles take more then sufficiently high quality images. Oooh now there is a whole thread in itself... Mobile Camera really useful for when something unexpected happens and good quality. But (for eg) an outdoor concert at night when you are 100+ yards from stage and need to have control over the auto functions of a camera - no way - that is "point & shoot time" and when it absolutely HAS to be perfect and planned Digital SLR Lost my trusty point & shoot in April and bought the new PowershotSX160IS - it is a superb machine, but the SLR s still going to my daughter's wedding! Anyway back on topic - having a fight here - we need these for work and one of the gang is INSISTING on the Experia - because it comes with loads of free movies and music... He really doesn't understand the concept of WORK! The HTC One X does seem the dogs bananas. Downside - it is a little BIG for the pocket/wallet/car keys/parking meter change scenario. Upside I have big clumsy fingers with two of them bent from too much cricket (almost as bad as Frank's Cousin at typing) So always found Iphone/IPad screens REALLY hard to use So the plus point on the one X is I CAN actually use the screen - so it's main fault seems it's main positive

dubai_phil Posted 16 May, 2012 Author Share Posted 16 May, 2012 (edited) Gang Thanks for the advice I REALLY appreciate it next home game I'm over I'll head for the Kingsland Tavern & owe you all a beer We went for the HTC One X Quad Core, got them today. Interestingly showed them to couple of lads down from UK office and they were gutted we'd got them with them having been issued with IPhone 4S's (cost of everything and ease of wifi on and off their main moans) Of course nobody told me I needed to go get a micro Sim but that's another 2 hour queue for tomorrow. So, again gang seriously - thanks Edited 16 May, 2012 by dubai_phil

Have gone for a simple techie solution - keeping the old Nokia E51 and will take that when out on the "boys nights out" with my point & shoot. It's not the phone that dictates the price of your voice/data usage, numbnuts. I do that when I travel, in fact am taking 3 old fones to Italy (wedding) so family can all be in touch. It doesn't work so well when expanded out as a Corporate Strategy though (the whole call forwarding is an issue, 80% of the calls to a Smartfone or any other type are work calls they are made to the home country number so you'd still have the call costs. In country PAYG Data costs are lower than roaming that's true but still high Think some of the new Dual Sim generations of fones will help that problem. DUNE Look at Google + Play Store I saw the various Sky Apps for Android there yesterday. I've got a TV for watching TV when at home and an iPad for watching TV when galavanting around the globe, so I have little need for a large screen. Something the size of a 4S would be ideal but having just spoken to Vodafone, they advised they can't do anything deal wise on the 4S but if I call back next week, they'll do me a deal on the Samsung S3. So I get a far superior phone and for less, just have to put up with a large screen.

As a result I have a - hang on, where's the box - a Nokia 1112!;-) Looked into getting a smart phone but don't actually NEED one, and with my well known propensity for losing and breaking things decided the CBA was against it. Phone calls and texts are vital (and cheap) however ["Platform Tavern or Junction?"]... It would no doubt be fun to have a smart phone, but nobody is paying for or subsidising it so it can wait (and Italian telecomms prices don't encourage).
