the wedge Posted 5 May, 2012 Share Posted 5 May, 2012 Hi all, Don't normally start new threads but I'm in a bit of trouble with putting a new light up in my flat and my Year 9 electronics knowledge has failed me. Here's a picture of the current situation.. There are three wires, two black, one red. I've put a bit of LX tape over one of the black wires so I can tell them apart. The last light fixture worked with just these 3 wires. The earth wire you can see just bypasses this light completely, feeding its way into the next room. As it is in the picture, the light works. But the lights in the rooms to the left of this room do not. The lights on the right hand side of this room do work as normal. I've tried countless combinations, resulting in a few tripped switches when any wire is in the earth part of the terminal and sometimes the bathroom light switch controlling this one and sometimes the light working at about 20% brightness.. Any help would be much appreciated... *Braces self for abuse*
do i not like fizzy pop Posted 5 May, 2012 Share Posted 5 May, 2012 A big worry is why the Red cable is connected to the Neutral - it is the 'older' cable colour for the live phase feed! Are your other lights wired in the same way? http://electrical.theiet.org/wiring-regulations/cable-colours/index.cfm

Window Cleaner Posted 5 May, 2012 Share Posted 5 May, 2012 (edited) Hard to say with the complete schema but are you sure that this light doesn't have 2 different on/off switches, looks like a classical va et vient(don't know the english for that) wiring system. other than that it would appear that the lights are wired in series on black wire loop. Earth wire doesn't come into it, lights are rarely earthed. Edited 5 May, 2012 by Window Cleaner
scally Posted 5 May, 2012 Share Posted 5 May, 2012 That looks like the two blacks are neutrals and go together in one connector and the red is the switch wire and goes to the live of the fitting. If you've done this and some lights do not work then check to see if you have loose wires in the box that you have missed.

dune Posted 5 May, 2012 Share Posted 5 May, 2012 L is live, N is neutral, the other is therefore obviously Earth. Trip the trip switch, wire it up, trip it back and see what happens.

RonManager Posted 5 May, 2012 Share Posted 5 May, 2012 Wait until the clock counts down to 00.00.01, then cut the BLUE wire. This has always worked well for me.
