Not really a stitich up, just simply that it was voted for by fans and Man U and Arsenal have more fans than us so it was always going to be won by players involved with the top clubs.

I dont know why the likes of Nike are still plying him with cash, he is such a god-awful ambassador for the game.

I would have put Mattys goals at 1 and 2.

How does his wife feel when he wants a bit action under the sheets?

IMHO one of Matty's should of made the top 3.

wasn't this done in an online poll?

half the ppl voting won't even remember le tiss, and the other half probably live in asia and support united

Rooney's goal just doesn't do it for me. He does shin it a bit, it's not a clean bicycle kick, not such a fast and straight cross, and there's something about a fat man getting stuck in the air that doesn't look right.

Rooney's volley against Newcastle was far better for sheer quality and cleanness of the strike.

come on..stop being bitter.

it was a brilliant over head kick..and voted as such

It's a daft competition. Recent goals get rated more highly in everything. It'll be loads of man utd fans, loads of kids who love Rooney and haven't heard of half the others, people young enough to barely recognise the grounds and lower camera quality of half the goals. I can remember dozens of better goals not even on the shortlist. There's people who'd put Cisse's goal on there already. New is better apparently.

Yes, this.

Its like polls that come up with OneDirection and PussyCat Dolls as the best bands ever, totally neglecting 60-odd years of fabulous music. Or how we get embarassing w*nk representing us at the Eurovision Song Contest.

This should have been decided by a panel of experts.

All overhead kicks are shinners to some degree, it's not possible to get your foot at the right angle to keep the ball down and get enough forward power whilst hanging upside-down otherwise, because you don't have the floor to push off to get the power to transfer to the ball that you do when you're shooting normally.

I knows it, cos I scored this (props to Minty for the assist), which is definitely a teeny bit of a shinner, but awesome nevertheless.

Amusingly this was last linked on the "Was Danny Wallace/Rory Delap's overhead better" thread on here last September.

Not as good as Rooney's, but I did scored one from 45 yards similar to Cisse's once which was miles better than his. ;)

It couldn't possibly be better, it wasn't scored for Man U !

Agree Rory's was better - would not have expected it to win given the way the voting in things work, but not to be even listed when Rooneys was is ludicrous and sums up wht these polls are really a waste of time...

Explain what makes it a better goal than all the other overhead strikes that you have ever seen. I saw Crouch score one equal to it playing for Saints reserves and he was on the eighteen yard line.

For me the very best goals involve more than one touch or simply a long shot. However brilliant the shot is, be is Crouch, Cisse or countless others over the years. Every season has some brilliant long shots, but it takes something a bit different to be amongst the best and most memorable goals over 20 years or so. Amazing skill, dribbling round a few players, amazing team move and so on.

Cisse's is a brilliant long shot, one of the best goals this season, but people are getting a bit carried away with it. I think the problem is, however good it is, and however unlikely it is a lesser player could do it, it is still possible. Some of Messi's goals I can't imagine another player on the planet being capable of. Scorers of classic great goals, be it Messi, Zidane, Bergkamp, Le Tissier, Maradona and so on, were rarely one touch goals. The genius is in the subtle touches, the skill, outwitting defenders completely and rounding it off with a decent finish.

Ah... but Adrian what you are missing is for such goals to be voted the best, those voting would need to know something about football...;)

Shock horror.

Did anyone really think he'd get it, when there are probably a few hundred million United fans across the globe?

This. And most of them will be about 12 so no recollection of the pre-Rooney era.

It's sufficient that we had our player with the two first goals, whereas no other player had more than one in the poll.

We know that if it wasn't for the glory teams' fans voting for their player that MLT would have won it, as either of those goals was arguably better technically than the others.

And having seen the Delap goal again, yes, even that was better than the Rooney bicycle kick, but he scored it for an unglamorous club, so it never stood a chance.

And why didn't the Chrissy Marsden football genius goal get included? See, the poll is a nonsense.

Its similar to people today voting for an Oasis album as being the best album ever made. Half the people voting weren't around to hear all the real classic stuff. In my view the same has happened here, classic vintage goals have been overlooked

This issue, like music, is entirely subjective. Don't get so excited because your opinion is not also held by the majority of people, enjoy it. You are special.

Get a grip man. It's a bit of PR fluff to boost the profile of the league's around the anniversary, not a ****ing general election.

Christ. With no Saints games for the usual bed-wetters to get all hysterical about and distracted by, its clearly going to be one hell of a long summer.

Roll on the "why haven't we signed anyone yet" thread.

What a f**king stitch-up. MLT not even in the top 3.

Watch that ugly Scouse w*nker play sh*t and get sent off in his only game at Euro 2012...

*pulls Alpine away....*

Sod this moaning for a game of cards.

How about SaintsWeb does it's own equivalent? (But of course, purely for Saints goals.)

Dissing Engelbert? You're dead to me.

the over head against city..?

brilliant goal

Crouch and Delap scored equally good overhead kick goals. Great goal, but nowhere near as good as either MLT goals.
