We gonna stick with the old 4-4-2 next season homies? Lot of people say you get d!cked playing the big clubs with the old 4-4-2!

I've been thinking bout when we played Man Utd at home and adkins went with a kind of 4-3-3 type thing. Do you think he might bring it back? It seemed to work pretty well up until we got beat!

Here's my 4-3-3 for next year - I've had to sign Matt Phillips cos I don't really fancy Guly or DeRidder. Would he be good in this role? Maybe Zaha would be betters? I've also chucked Lallana back in the midfield cos I want to see him get as much of the ball as possible!

Bearsy's 4-3-3

     Lee Lambert Phillips

   Lallana Schneiderlin Cork

Fox Hooiveld Fonte Richardson

Not sure Sharp would be too happy with the OP's team, not sure he'd especially like playing as a wide forward. We could try Sharp/Lee leading the line with Lambert operating in the space and making up the numbers in midfield when required. Or we could stick with a 442 until Lambert leaves/retires and get molested by the good teams. That last one doesn't require much to change, but change needs to happen for us to evolve as a club. The change will take some pragmatism from Nigel Adkins, which is something I trust him too do and it makes me glad that we hired him in the first place and not some dinosaur like Fat Sam.

I'll be having a talk with Billy! I'll be saying look Billy u was signed under the previous manager and now you've got to prove yourself to me to get back in this team! I'm playing an innovative 4-3-3 now so what you want to do is grow 6 inches to be my point man or gain a yard of speed and I'll give you a go out wide. If you don't like it you can do one Billy, I'd be saying to Billy.

Your problem there pat garrett is you've left us wide open down our right flank!

4-4-2s is effective against teams what like to give it a good hoof. I'm playing a 4-3-3 next season cos i want my wide front men to harrass the opposition full backs so that teams what like to play it out from the back ain't gonna be comfortable doing so. I ain't going to play it against Stoke tho or West Ham if they go up cos they still be all hooooof!

Not thought it through fully yet but I think maybe 4-1-4-1 or 4-2-3-1. Both would utilise a new defensive mid and SRL up front. Second could also have Morgan sitting as deep lying playmaker. The exact formation's probably rather misleading as I tend to think of it as having a defensive unit and an attacking unit. Lallana and Guly like to shift positions and join the attack so they'd be more attacking than it looks on paper but with extra defensive cover. Adkins seems to favour a kind if total football in advanced postitions and this in my opinion would give the attacking players more license to do so. You could tweak it to something like 4-1-3-2 if you wanted more fire power up from.

For me a standard 4-4-2 is more predictable and easier to defend against. Our great strength is that when we're playing at our vest we're unpredictable with players swapping positions, Rickie occasionally dropping deep or running the channels. It makes it harder for the opposition to assign markers. When we play 4-4-2 it's not always a standard version which can be great in attack but can leave us exposed in defence.

from the tv games i saw last year our biggest problem was how efficient our oppenents were when they went forward with that in mind i would like some more numbers in defence. fox was too often drawn inside the penalty box giving too much space to opponents down the right.

to combat this i would play 3 centre backs, jos and a new siging as the srong cb's and fonte as the playmaking cb.

this would then keep fox wider and outnumber on opponents forwards. fox would bdo a good job as a wing back i think.

lallana could then a free role through the midfield with a couple of good central midfielders in behind him

..................................davis..............................

...........hooiveld............fonte.......New CB.............

richardson.....................................................fox

..................schneiderlin.........cork.......................

..................................lallana.............................

....................lambert..............sharp....................

areas to strenghten are then a 1st choice centre back, a reserve centreback, potentially a right wing back and another central midfielder

Somehow that kind of defensive formation looks great to me for taking on the top teams. So we play on the break, and as mulletsaint said, confuse them by flexibly making runs and swapping positions. Fox and Richardson would need to practice running back faster and shielding the back three more proactively though, right?

if we play the diamond formation we will get slaughtered, i would go with the 451 formation which is 433 when attacking just as the OP had said. Swansea play it very very well, Norwich have also played it a few times this season and done well with it and Wigan of late have done very well with it and of course we all know that Barca play with it. For it to work you need your forward wingers to help the midfield and to track back, you can't have a lazy midfielder there. Ince and Philips from Blackpool would be great there along with Lallana+ Lee we would have 2 players each side that could play there, all would help the midfield and get into the box to help the striker. I would then buy a box-box midfielder to play alongside Morgan.

......................................Davis/kasper......................................

...................Fonte/New CB...................Hooviveld.......................

Richardson...........................................................................Fox

...........................................Morgan.........................................

.....................Cork/NEW CM....................NEW CM/Lallana..............

.....Philips/Lallana...........................................................Lee/Ince..

...........................................Lambert........................................

Our 442 formation will get sussed very quickly we will need to pack the midfield, we could change to 442 as the game goes, switching lee upfront, lallana LM, Philips RM Morgan and NEW CM in the middle. It's not negative tactics, we can still pass the ball around, we just have that extra width which we lacked most of the season and have bodies in the midfield to help the defence.

Hey! I was reading just now some people saying we was playing 4-3-3 next season and i thought to myself wasn't i saying that like a while ago!

I've resurected dis thread so that you can all make tributes to me and about how i know alot about footballs and stuff! Also to add further credence to the rumours going round that Nigel Adkins is Bearsy and Bearsy is Nigel Adkins!
