SaintSteve Posted 4 May, 2012 Posted 4 May, 2012 Personally I dont think he will be up to The Premiership. I hope I'm wrong cos I dont think he will be replaced. I can't believe we are already writing off our own players, based on a rumour. Fox's positives far outweigh the negatives; excellent ball control, fantastic delivery, great in the air (did not look out of place at sweeper in one game this season) v does not get close enough to the winger to prevent crosses. Depends what you want and how much you want to pay to resolve the negative while keeping the positives. I don't know any full back with his delivery from set pieces; end of argument.
Bailey Posted 4 May, 2012 Posted 4 May, 2012 Fox is alot better than people on here are giving him credit for. His form since joining Saints shows he's easily capable of playing in the Premier League and I'm not at all surprised to see this rumour resurface. He's twice the player Harding is too and that's no criticism of DH. I'd even go as far as saying that he's the best left-back we've had since the likes of Bale and Bridge. By no means am I suggesting he's as good as them however. Worth clarifying before anyone jumps on that comment!
beatlesaint Posted 4 May, 2012 Posted 4 May, 2012 end of argument. oh well thats that then. Why do people have to say this when all they mean is they have made their point and have nothing to add ? Its all about opinions, its not an argument for one and unless you are a mod who can close the thread its not necessarily the end !

syd_barrett_saint Posted 4 May, 2012 Posted 4 May, 2012 IMHO the FIRST DEFENSIVE priority is to find a CB BETTER than Jose AND Jos. Good as they are we still need better there. The FIRST signing priority though HAS to be a proper RM who could also play LM if Adam is out for any time The SECOND priority is to fnd a CM who is BETTER than Morgan ad Cork the THIRD priority has to be finding that CB The FOURTH priority has to be finding a 4th striker (or do we expect DC LB & Guly to be the answer in the PL?) THEN we probably need a new RB Which, IMHO, puts the LB slot pretty far down the list, and I am happy to have Fox starting there next season Our SQUAD in the PL will be better than the last time we were there (hell I'd far rather have Butterfield at RB than Telfer!), BUT we need to bring the right quality with the right Mind Set and of course PACE Yep, whilst in an ideal world I would like to see us get a better (more reliable defensively) left back in than Fox, I agree more or less with this priority list... left back is quite far down it:-)
channonball Posted 4 May, 2012 Posted 4 May, 2012 Left back is fairly high on my replacement list. Fox got found out regularly defensively in the Championship, it's only going to get harder in the Prem. I think we need another striker & a playmaking CM, right winger and centre back.

david in sweden Posted 4 May, 2012 Posted 4 May, 2012 Discuss. they can look as much as they like, but Danny seems content to stay put for the rest of his career with SFC - if you read interview with him.

saintbob40 Posted 4 May, 2012 Posted 4 May, 2012 Spurs are well aware of Foxs Coulrophobia and are seeking to take advantage of his predicament.

Saint Matty 76 Posted 4 May, 2012 Posted 4 May, 2012 Fox is going to get d*cked by every right midfielder in this league. The thought of him coming up against a player like Valencia is actually frightening.
Bearsy Posted 4 May, 2012 Posted 4 May, 2012 They won't be anywhere near each other! Valencia hogs the touchline and Fox can keep a close eye on him from his position in the penalty area. No problem. No problem at all.
Badger Posted 4 May, 2012 Posted 4 May, 2012 Back in the 90s Andy Hinchliffe got an England call up due to his curling corner ability. Well that's the only thing I can think it was for. No - it was the hairstyle that goy him an England call up.
Badger Posted 4 May, 2012 Posted 4 May, 2012 On the subject of left backs, and given the list of names, may I just add: Mark Dennis. Best Saints left back ever.* *although David Peach came close, just a shame his best years were played before we reached the old First Division.

gazzzza Posted 4 May, 2012 Posted 4 May, 2012 OK my view is that Fox has improved as the season has gone on. Certainly he can be caught out of position (agree with the comments about the Lallana cover in front of him). Certainly he can stand off too much and that has cost us gaols. But on the positive side his delivery from corners has been a game changer, I have no idea on the stats but it seems to me we have scored far more goals from corners this year than our previous stay in the Championship. The variation with his fizzed balls and Lallana's corners cause defences all sorts of problems. I seriously doubt he will be off to Spuds, yep it was on Twitter after all, BUT like Guly, I think he is better than many believe and LB is certainly a position where we will not have to strengthen during the summer until AFTER we have filled the priority areas (especially with Luke Shaw possibly stepping up to the bench next season) And anyway we still have Dickson in reserve to come back in from loan.... a level headed opinion, he just needs to work on his defensive skills a bit more, i'm sure NA will realise that with the likes of valencia to come.
Saint Matty 76 Posted 4 May, 2012 Posted 4 May, 2012 The right midfielders in this league are going to completely annihilate Fox. The thought of someone like Valencia going up against him is frightening.
Turkish Posted 4 May, 2012 Posted 4 May, 2012 The right midfielders in this league are going to completely annihilate Fox. The thought of someone like Valencia going up against him is frightening. Dnt be so ridiculous. Stephen Crainey if half the player Danny Fox is and he held his own last season.
Special K Posted 4 May, 2012 Posted 4 May, 2012 (edited) Fox is a good lad and a decent player. Strange to see the comments about him being crap and discounting him from the PL before we've even kicked a ball. He's still young(ish) and his best years are ahead of him. He's strong, quick and has an excellent left peg. (Believe it or not teams need left footed players). Good stamina, reading of the game and whilst he (seldomly but) occassionally gets caught too far from his man, his overall play more than makes up for these rare errors. He'll give oppo players plenty to think about next season and i'm look0ing forward to seeing him giving it in the PL. Edited 4 May, 2012 by Special K
Legod Third Coming Posted 4 May, 2012 Posted 4 May, 2012 Farrrkin hell. Anyone reading this would think the Premier League is rammed full of Roberto Carloses and Arjen Robbens... I have never been so concerned about these pacy wingers who will rip Fox to pieces... YES. Guess what, we will have to play Gareth Bale - he ripped Milan apart, wth a world class defence. YES. We will have to play Chamberlain and Walcott - they gave the Champion's League finalists' defence a torrid time. YES. We will have to play Wayne Rooney... But guess what?? We'll also have to play Nathan Dyer, who wasn't good enough for us, according to the very same people who claim Fox isn't either. And we'll have to play teams like Norwich, Bolton, QPR, Villa, Liverpool, Reading, West Ham. And guess what? They're not all Champion's League contenders full of world class players. They're clubs like us. Just like us. With fans wondering whether a left back you have never heard of either can cope with Walcott. And some days, you can't. But then, we are allowed to attack too - maybe you didn't know that?

GAS Posted 4 May, 2012 Posted 4 May, 2012 In my view, yes easily. Dennis could cross and got forward well. But he could also tackle and defend with a vengeance when needed.Mark Dennis was a thug. Bridge for us was better.
Badger Posted 4 May, 2012 Posted 4 May, 2012 Mark Dennis certainly had 'disciplinary problems' and some 'issues' off the pitch, but from my view of over 40 years of following Saints,he remains my first choice LB. As previously stated David Peach is a close second. Bridge was a great player up to 2003 for us, but for me lacked the tackling or drive of Dennis.

As previously stated David Peach is a close second. Bridge was a great player up to 2003 for us, but for me lacked the tackling or drive of Dennis. Agreed - MD 100%. Apart from his defensive duties he was an excellent crosser of a moving ball - if you get time just look at the build up to the Danny Wallace over head kick against Liverpool all those years ago. I think Worthington picks the ball up in midfield plays a blond ball to MD out wide - MD drives forward crosses on the run to Mark Wright at the back post headers back across and DW over head kick - back of the net. Yes MD was sometimes overly aggressive but you have to bare in mind that football was a little different back then with the likes of Jimmy Case, Joe Jordan, Vinny Jones etc giving just as good (if not better) as they received.
saint_bert Posted 5 May, 2012 Posted 5 May, 2012 If Spurs were looking at any of our LB's I would have thought it would have been Luke Shaw.
belgrave Posted 5 May, 2012 Posted 5 May, 2012 Dennis was the best English left back at the time by a mile. Quick, aggressive, could tackle, and play. His reputation did for him.

Stuart Pearce would not have got a sniff at an England shirt for years had Dennis' career not been blighted by his 'off the field' issues.

LOL well seeing as the likes of Kebe, Adomah and Ince had no trouble giving fox the run around I'm pretty sure the likes of Gabriel Agbonlahor and Nathan Dyer will have no trouble. IMO if we play the same system we've played most of this season our fullbacks aren't going to cope with a lot of good PL players we struggled against decent championship wingers this season. Now if Nigel is planning to play a system that gives more protection to our fullbacks then we might be alright.

dubai_phil Posted 5 May, 2012 Author Posted 5 May, 2012 Interesting. Have to admit I didn't realise Fox is an International Footballer - he's played for Scotland and Has already played in the PL. http://www.saintsfc.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10280~2759014,00.html

If that's your benchmark then so is Michael Ricketts!
Saint Matty 76 Posted 5 May, 2012 Posted 5 May, 2012 Dnt be so ridiculous. Stephen Crainey if half the player Danny Fox is and he held his own last season. Playing as part of the defence who conceded the most goals in the league and then got relegated? Yeah good point.

Saint Garrett Posted 25 February, 2013 Posted 25 February, 2013 Some peoples opinions have changed !!
Barry Sanchez Posted 25 February, 2013 Posted 25 February, 2013 He is the worst left back I can remember for saints, his positional play and sense is awful, this has to be bull****.

Saint Garrett Posted 25 February, 2013 Posted 25 February, 2013 Still better than Harding. Well thats not hard though is it, Harding was dreadful.
