Sunny Beach, Bulgaria

I've been a couple of times, never stayed right in the middle of Sunny Beach but on the edge in (very nice) privately owned apartments between St Vlas (good bar on the beach near the marina - up the hill to the village centre) and Elinite.

Last time was 3 years ago but was 'cheap-as-chips'. Paid an extortinate :p 70p for a pint of the decent local beer around the beach but go back a road or 2 (across the main drag through the centre - and still very touristy) and you could pay as little as 30p for the same pint!

The Magaluf of the Black Sea but Brits more the minority - more Dutch, Germans, Eastern Europeans. If you're a bunch of lads you'll get the usual fare, just half the price of the Balearics (as long as things haven't changed too much in the 3 years). If you're a family it's good to get away from the middle at the end of the night.

Buses were often crowded and very cheap but word of warning, they stopped running at 10pm and then the taxi rates went through the roof. The cabbies hang around the bus stops at 5-to-10 rubbing their hands!

We were one end of the bay, the other side of Sunny Beach is the Old Town of Nessebar which is a quieter escape from the centre.

He's right about the Russian mafia though.

Went last summer for 5 nights en-route to Sofia for the Bulgaria v England game.

Stayed in a luxury private villa 5 mins from Sunny Beach and it was the best choice we ever made. The town itself is your usual tourist trap khazi that most major resorts have become, so by day it doesn't look too great - hence why we're glad we stayed outside. Though the nightlife is class and it's dirt cheap - 50p pints and buy 1 get 1 free on Long Island Ice Tea's - the amount of booze they put in them is horrific and 99% of the time leads to memory loss. Behave yourself as the bouncers are gorillas and carry little bags, which contain a cosh and a knife normally - as a mate found out.

Be warned, the food is vile. Stick to the Eastern European dishes, their attempts at 'western' food is barely edible.

Looking forward to this actually, ought to be cheap as anything and cracking nightlife too. Any recommendations for clubs and bars to go to?

Oh and believe me when I say i'll be well behaved, i've heard a fair few stories about eastern european gangsters...

Bulgaria is a great place for hols, been going to Bulgaria for the last 6 years and going again this year to Pomorie which is just down the road from Sunny Beach. Food and booze is very good and cheap. Weather very hot. For a good night out try Khans tent up on the hill over looking looking Sunny Beech or the Windmill for a meal. Also Nessebar is a fantastic place to look around. Make sure if using a Taxi you agree a price. Night clubs very safe as long as you behave yourself.

The sea water is very clean and very warm

Don't buy food from venders selling fruit on the beach as they will try to rip you off

Never seen any trouble from local Mafia, tourist are Bulgarians livelyhood, any locals caught stealing etc from a tourist will get a right going over

Driving standards very poor

Police take bribes for speeding....no receipt then cash in back pocket

Get your Lev over there as you will get a better rate

Don't let the fact you are going to Eastern Europe put you off as they have a lot of thing we could look up to

Once you come back keep quiet about Bulgaria as eveyone will want to go there and up the prices

Below is where we have stayed, lux villa with own pool £800 for 2 weeks on a great complex. Main pool has a bar in the water with footy on all day. Use Owners direct web site for bookings

Also saw the Prodgidy at the Bourgas Music feastival 2 years ago. Tickets were £18 each for the day. Great festival on the beach, beer was £1.50 a go and there was no hassle at all. Make our festival prices look stupid.

Also try the fantastic and very clean water park at Nessebar....very funny adult show on twice a day...approx £20 to get into the park. They give you a black wrist strap that you put money on and then use this to buy food and beet etc....works very well

  • 1 month later...

Just got back this morning, had an amazing time. Prices apparently not as cheap as in previous years (mostly around 10lv if you're going for a cocktail somewhere, although BG beer was still pretty cheap) but still low enough to warrant 11 days of debauchery...

Stayed at Hotel Marvel, right up at the top of the strip. It was about a 20 minute walk to get into town itself, but that didn't really bother us and the hotel was stunning. Great pool, spacious rooms and balconies overlooking the sea (well, parts of it anyway).

Ended up in Central Bar most of the time, which was a pretty decent place. Drinks were generally sh!te in there, but getting plastered on the cheap at a nearby bar was never a problem with promoters offering us free this, free that as we walked past. Great atmosphere in most places, only saw 1 or 2 fights the whole time and one of them was when a ****ed up One Direction-a-like tried to start sh!t on a bouncer after getting kicked out. Turns out, he could've avoided the fight if he'd just slipped him 10lv, which is what his mate did when he was kicked out a few minutes later!

All in all, great holiday although i'm not convinced that I would go back. For one, the prices will be much higher next year, as everything seems to have been raised by about 20% from last year. Secondly, the new bars and clubs which were opening up were huge, soul-less monstrosities (avoid Disco Orange at all costs!) and they're going to take all the business away from the smaller places which are far better.
