we aint going to be getting vidic and the like..so I'm guessing nearly all the players we will sign will be "shyte"

I'm not expecting Vidic, but Zat Knight is closer to Jermaine Wright than Vidic in football ability

you may be right

give us 5 examples of CB that we would realistically get?

5 that are better.

Scott Dann

Curtis Davies

Roger Johnson

Danny Wilson

James Tomkins

I'd love to see one of Tomkins and Davies here (obviously depending on the playoffs).

I bet there are LOADS of CBs in Europe of that sort of age & ability, who would love a shot in the Premiership.

I expect most of our signings will be players we haven't heard of/least expect.

He would add experience to the squad straight away, but I don't think he'd necessarily improve it to the degree we all want.

I don't want us to get back into the habit of signing players for players sake, just because their experienced. We had a squad of dross last time in the premier league. I'd hope the signings we make are better than any of our current players, and I'm not sure Zat is to be honest.

To be honest if he is free and doesn't demand high wages why not as a squad player or to give Jose a run for his money. We would still need one better cb though.

Also known as 'The Lowe Approach', and the reason we ended up with a squad of 40 journeymen and backup players.

If a player wouldn't (at least potentially) directly improve the position they play in, there is no value in us acquiring them. We are a newly promoted team, not an established top half PL team.

We are going to be disappointed once we do sign players!

Knight has made 100's of appearences in the prem, played for England full and u21 and demanded transfer fees of £3.5 and more recently £4m!

We could now sign him on a free but the large majority on here are unmoved! Who are we expecting lol?

I agree with what you are saying but was just thinking of the depth of our squad that's all. I did say we need a decent cb to partner jos as well. If one gets injured and the other gets red carded we may struggle with jose and Martin.

Knight is prob worth a punt on a free as a squad player, ).

Dear Lord. Keep this up and someone will start a thread saying Titus Bramble is the best signing we could make .

He is AWFUL. He does NOT fit the template we have for hungry players who want to go on a Journey with the TEAM.

Look. I am all for bringing in experience but there are certain players in the PL who make you wonder what planet most of the scouts & managers live on.

Jeez, I'd rather let Jaidi have a run out "as a squad player" FFS

Using a nautical analogy for delldays, every time I've seen him he's had the anticipation, acceleration and turning circle of the Queen Mary - the first one.

That's Zat Knight, not delldays.

Not for me, thanks. Given Knight's 'skill' when in possession, though, BFS might be interested.

I don't care how many clubs have wasted how much money, from what I have seen he's average at best and how he ever got 2 caps I will never know. Be that as it may, the step up is big, so he could still be better than what we have. We'll have to wait and see on that. Also whether we can find better is another question.

One more thing, now is the time to take advantage of out of contract players, but only if they are top notch.

Very average player, yes he falls into the experienced bracket but just would not suit the way we play.

I think that's an important point, it'll be more about type of person, how they fit in and if they suit our style of play. It's signings like that that give us a good chance without spunking money on a group of Prem players

Exactly, its important to not follow QPRs style, basically sign anyone with any prem experience, but sign hungry players that fit our style, we are a technically gifted team, with a good engine, and thats the sort of players we need.

Tomkins

Wheater

Dann

Davies

Sol Bamba

All better quality then Knight

F*cking hell, please not Zat Knight. Much better players out there who would come to us.

If we could get hold of 2 CBs in this window that would be great, meaning Martin could go out on loan to get some more experience. A first-choice right-footed CB (e.g. Curtis Davies) and a squad player left-footed CB (Danny Wilson).

He is 32 as well.

the vast majority of our squad is well under 30, an old head at the back may well be a good move.

and besides, he's probably not " Saints fit " ** ...yet .. (nor I suspect is anyone likely to be signed this summer).

** We can see what it did for that lazy, overweight Liverpudlian burger king from Bristol, until he first "really " got fit.

Think people said the same when we signed Paul Williams...he done alright.

Then again we have signed some donkey centrebacks over the years as well - he may be another! :)

Guess we got to trust our management team on our signings.

I can recall quite a lot of people saying exactly the same when we signed a slow-moving, muscle-bound 30 year old reserve centre half ..from Newcastle.

His name was .. John McGrath. R.I.P. In retrospect, I've rarely seen anyone tougher...and hardly a red card in sight.
