I think that if we are a Premier club in the long term the next step for the younger players will be loans at appropriate levels. Arsenal and Man Utd do this successfully. Only prodigies will go into the team directly.

One good thing about the Premier League is that we're allowed 7 subs on the bench. Will hopefully allow us to give a few youngsters a bit of a match experience if we ever happen to be crusiing a game. In the Championship, where it felt like everygame was important, with 5 subs unfortunately there just wasn't space for someone unproven.

No doubt a few youngsters will go on loan hopefull to the Championship/League 1 too.

from all accounts, Luke Shaw is a prodigy. I suspect we've deliberately not played him yet to ensure he signs this 3-year deal in July before any of the "big boys" come calling after seeing him play.

From what I've seen of Shaw he looks very, very good. Excellent control, good passer, fairly quick, good dribbler, decent tackler. He definitely has that something which sets him apart at the age group he's been playing in.

As for how far he's off the first team, well it's hard to say as many prospects at that age fail to make a decent career out of a promising start but he appears to have all the footballing attributes he needs. Mentally, who knows.

You don't think they send scounts to youth team games then?

Cllearly they do. However, you can't properly see a player's potential, and how good they are, until they play against higher level opposition to see how they fare.

Looked like a boy amongst men against Milwall. I expect he's miles off the first team.

Judging him on a 15 minute (if that) cameo away at Millwall is slightly bizarre.
