This is what you are not getting my beardy wierdy ol' chum. We are trying to understand them, we are trying to find out why this is so much fun. Maybe we are missing out on something? Maybe when we see the light we can convert to fancydressism too, as yet though no one has managed to explain why this is such a great laugh that we are told it is.

In that case can we assume it is a great laugh?

I think what we need here is a poll SWF or even for you guys to get into the streets and do a census type survey asking why its a great laugh dressing up at football. Maybe then, from the results a serious conclusion could be drawn whether it is a great laugh or not.

Each to their own I say. Not my thing but hey-ho it is a laugh (for me anyway) seeing costumed people out at the football.

Just maybe nobody on here actually dressed up.........if it bothers you and Dunce sooo much why not just ask the person who is dressed up whilst at the game.......doh, just realised my mistake, Dunce wasn't at the game was he, as he is such an f'ing uber fan he is probably too cool to go and be associated with such weird people.

Did you enjoy your promotion day w@nkin on the sofa Dunce, tab open on SWF and another for ladyboysRus.com? f'ing weirdo!

I was actually stood next to Turkish when he asked someone who was dressed as He-Man why he was wearing that ridiculous outfit. Once again, the person wasn't able to answer, nervously smiled and walked away.

Because She-Ra was already taken?? Now that would have been the best costume EVER.

So as we don't understand the logic of grown men wearing face paints and jester hats to football matches, we're comparable to a group of people that committed some of the worst atrocities mankind has ever witnessed. Riiiight...

You do understand that coming to an assumption like that makes you mentally unstable?

So no one understands the logic... so what? Why is it so important that you understand WHY someone does something? You know and everyone else knows that you dont really give a flying feck why these folk dress up or how they get any fun from it.... you just dont want them doing it because of your attitude and oopinion on what makes a 'fan' and tehy dont fall into it... why does it make you uncomfortable? And why is it so important to you?

Not understanding that everyone is different, not believing in their right to be different and do as they wish IS the fascist attitude I was talking about - no-one is comparing anyone one to mass murderers, but making a comparison between the principles that oppress the rights and freedoms of individuals.

It basically stems from an inferiority complex. Dress up in the right labels, hang around with other people who wear the same clobber and put down people who dont wear those labels and I'll be cool right? Er no, you'll be a sheep who betrays a lack of any independent thought. Last year Stone Island, this year Ma Strum, next year a lump of turd on toast if its photographed well and in the right magazines.

It's ok we wont be able to see what anyone is wearing at SMS soon with everyone bringing flares to the games next season. Won't see much footy either :)

Sorry couldn't help myself.

It's called pride in your appearance Timothy. If we were all sheep we'd all be fat, embarassing messes. 90% of English people dont have a clue how to dress, surely we'd be one of these, no?

I remember that, person scuttled off sharply with no answer as to why they were dressed in a ridiculous manner for a 40-something year old male.

Isnt because he wanted to good enough reason? I dont know why they do it either, I wouldn't, but a collection of people in rented outfits not taking themselves seriously is a lot less tedious than a set of 30 somethings wearing cloned clothes too young for them that they bought cheap from a guy off the net who got them as cut price seconds from the factory in Italy.

Is it wrong to be inquisitive? Is it wrong to try and understand how the human mind works at times? Is it wrong to take an interest in what makes people tick? I don't believe it is.

All we want is an answer, as of yet, we've had pages and pages of waffle from you lot (please see my earlier post if you're still unsure what this means) but no actual answer.

I'm sorry to keep drawing parallels with my own thread but they are the same in many ways. The difference being is you thought the flare looked good and gave some respect to the club where as the clown suits you thought brought the clubs respect down. It seems the club should be employing you as their PR director as you seem to know what's good for the clubs image.

To answer your question, do I think it's ok for grown men to dress as clowns, in moderation at games like Saturday why not as for them it made the celebrations better. I got repeated told by you and others the flare made the celebration better so please tell me what the difference is?

Is it wrong to be inquisitive? - No it isn't

Is it wrong to try and understand how the human mind works at times? - No it isn't but you have to accept the probability of multiple different answers that may differ from your deeply held conditioning and that they aren't necessarily all wrong...just different see above for why you are asking.

Is it wrong to take an interest in what makes people tick? Not at all - nor is it wrong if they tick to a different rhythm, timescale or note to the one that you accept as the only way - or even outside a wider band of parameters.

Happy to help with your curiosity...these, naturally, are just my opinions...they may differ from yours and many others but they work for me. Dressing up is not what amuses me, nor is that Hyacinth Bucket sitcom but if others laugh at or find enjoyment in either it doesn't embarrass me - why should it? I'm comfortable enough in my own skin, I'm inquisitive as to why you feel it so deeply, what happened in your youth to engender such disquiet?

But mostly I'm just taking the p iss as the subject is not one of the more serious ones within my life and agendas :)

agree and anyway if they had any real money or class they would not wear those cheap branded products. just some silly guys egos eyeing up other guys to see if they wear the latest badge in their own little world like the sheep they are and yet no one else notices them. makes you wonder who are the real clowns,i suppose it makes up for their lack of personality.

Not sure why you are trying to argue the point about them dressing up in designer gear. Looking smart is not a bad thing either?

Who gives a stuff what labels you wear. Just be a normal bloke going down to the pub and football, not a middle aged man dressed as a clown with face paint and balloons, on a par with Skate bloody Westwood.

Here are a few rules for those in doubt. please try and stick to them. What is and isn't acceptable to wear to football

Ok

Smart casual. Dress to impress dark denim jeans which are not faded and have multi pockets. Jeans must fit well. Smart trainers or shoes. For shoes Camper, Clarks originals are acceptable brands. A smart polo shirt or t-shirt and a jacket or well fitting top.

Replica shirts - okay IMO but not my thing. Dont not wear them over a jumper or hooded top. Wear them under a coat or you look like a *****.

Retro shirts - the best bet for a shirter and better than a normal shirt. Again not my thing but better than a relica shirt if its yours.

Scarves - Okay IMO, quite like seeing the old fashion bar style scarves. These are fine when worn with a winter coat in that season not worn with a t-shirt in the august and april FFS.

Not okay

Jester hats - you look like a c*nt. Middle aged blokes wearing them look like a single, loser virgin who lives with his mum.

Wigs - see above

Foam hands and face paints - you deserve to be ironed out

fancy dress - See Jester hats FFS.

this list is not exhaustive. Please try and adhere to it and not embarass the club next season.

KR

Turkish.

Are silk scarves, all the rage in the 70's so very retro, acceptable?

Also you make no mention of:

Flat Caps

Clogs

Pipes

Thermos Flasks (for Bovril)

Duffle Bags

Bicycle Clips

Wooden Rattles

Are these traditional football supporters garb and accoutrements now on the banned list, we must be told!

My club, in fairness, is represented by largely youthful footballers dressed in the team kit.

It's supported by various tens of thousands of both genders of all ages dressed in all manner of fashion, fancy dress, part team strips of varying vintages...a very small percentage of whom occasionally dress in a manner that sends the uber-fashionistas apopletic...which isn't a bad reason for doing it on reflection?!

To be fair most people are getting lost in the fancy dress thing but as that video about the stretford end (cracking video btw) showed football in the this country really has lost something in recent years.

I guess the thing with fancy dress is that it's an easy target as it shows the creeping "Americanisation" of the game that's been happening for a while now. Of course people are nominally right in saying that folk should be able to dress however they want but let's look at this honestly, when you watch on tv and see away support like United, Leeds, Spurs, Bristol City, Celtic or Rangers - lads, dads and even families but not normally in colours and nearly all standing - then look at the foam hand fancy dress brigade which would most of you prefer to see?

Hell even my mum (in her 60's) commented on the Football league show by wondering why the hell they always interview the most embarrassing of our fans.

Still on the flip side it's great to see clubs like FCUM coming through the leagues and maybe with time that'll be the difference, the franchises and brands will have their own "entertainment" league and those of us that want something a bit more meaningful, passionate and ours will pick up smaller teams with some soul.

Oh and sadly it's only going to get worse next season, ticket prices will see to that. I just hope our first game isn't on TV as that'll have them out in force, instead it'd be nice to show people that going down to league one has made southampton football club a proper club, with real heart and soul. Rather than one of these corporate jokes that exists in the prem. I'm not however going to hold my breath on that one.

Still not getting it Frankie boy. Maybe you could explain, ideally in bullet points and in less than 500 words, why asking what is fun about dressing up like freak is in anyway insecure or down to a fragile ego.

My thoughts exactly. The whole tacky Americanisation of the game is very sad. A decade ago our club wasn't like this. I mean 40 year old blokes in clown costumes. It's utterly embarrassing and makes us a laughing stock.

Obviously this thread has more than a touch of the wind up about it but there are some good points made. We as fans have given up a lot down the years and we're starting to resemble american football crowds these days in this country. Now call me a snob if you want but i'd much rather see us go down the German football route with the game being more about fans.

Mind you there are many on here whetting their teeth at the idea of us becoming a global brand so maybe it's me that's out of touch and a little depressed about the state of fan culture in this country.
