It's fair enough if you don't like it, but it certainly can't be described as 'unoriginal' or 'unimaginative' can it.

I suspect he means it is unoriginal because it looks very similar to that old liverpool kit and unimaginative because from a distance it looks completely red so there isn't much imagination in comparison to say the sash kit or other kits we have had down the years.

Exactly. I can see reasons why people might not like it, but I think some of the criticism on here is made up as they go along.

Agree with this. Someone said it was inspirational earlier - it aint - but by the same token it isn't unispiring either.

Just a kit.

serious question here as I don't know

how many prem clubs...or even english clubs have this design....?

Without being pedantic and claiming that with the pinstripes its unique (it isn't, to all intents and purposes we have an all red kit).....

Just as a home kit; Liverpool obviously have it, and that's it in the PL. I'm pretty sure there are none in the Championship, all teams that wear red shirts have white or black shorts/socks. So 1 team in the top 2 divisions.

I don't normally do emoticons, but...

Again, I agree that some criticism has been OTT. You cannot compare us to what's going on at Cardiff. With them, it's 'have red shirts from now on or we pull the plug'.

This thread just sums up Saintsweb.

overeacting just because of a difference of opinion.

its a piece of clothing ffs.

if you like it,buy it,if you don't like it,don't buy it.

we have not worn stripes on occasions....so what.

lets hope we stay up eh! That is what is important, not being fashion gurus.

In actual fact it is a lot more than that:

It is a uniform.

It is a brand.

It is an identity.

You wear it as a statement.

You wear it to be supportive.

You wear it to be proud.

Sure it is a crappy little piece of polyester but within our society (and culture!) it has a meaning and represents a strong bond between a group of like minded people !

Agree. To be fair Saints Web has lived up to form on this one from both sides, more entertaining than everyone agreeing and being rational.

Do Liverpool fans think they plyed in 'red & white stripes' in the 80's?

This is a very good point.

I'll repeat what I said a while ago - you ask anyone what colours or design Southampton play in. The answer is 'red and white stripes'. For the pedants, they don't say 'red and white pinstripes'. We're known for the proper stripes.

Sounds a bit of a stretch but it is true that red is the best colour to have in a kit. Dunno if it's psychological or like you say cos the players see their team-mates that much quicker, but:

Man Utd > Man City

Liverpool > Everton

Arsenal > Tottenham

Southampton > Portsmouth

Bristol City > Bristol Rovers

Nottingham Forest > Notts County

Wouldn't surprise me at all if Cardiff Reds are more successful than Cardiff Blues!

Man city are better than Man United and Everton are better than Liverpool

What do you think of it?

I can see why some wouldn't like it -it is a fair divergence from what most would consider what a Saints home kit should look like and they are pushing it a bit with the lack of white on it. I'd be more concerned if it was part of a wider move to change our home colours permanently - guess none of us really know about that. Looking back its made me realise how few home shirts in the last 30 years have been the classic red&white stripes, especially compared to how little the likes of Stoke or Sunderland seem to deviate from their traditional kits.

Think both kits look smart for what its worth, but then I only occasionally buy football shirts and that's to play in, so I'm not really part of the market audience.

You think a plain red kit with pin stripes is original and imaginative! Blimey.

At least in the 80's when we ditched the traditional stripes the kits were a bit different, and they stayed in the Saints colours. Plonking a Saints badge on a Liverpool shirt is just lazy. Probably just the cheapest option available.

Umm Saints shirts/colours aren't recognisable ??? eh. everyone knows we're red and white stripes. Yes we had the Sash for 1 season, apart from that always red & white stripes, that's our colours.

That is why we should keep them, how will our new world wide audience know that?

The more I see it, the more I like it. I actually get a little kick from the fact it's annoying everyone too - but then I quite liked the Pony "rubgy" shirt from way back, although that's probably just nostalgia.

I'm more concerned about the team we're building than the shirt. If we can get some decent performances in then I'm sure this shirt will grow on us. The retro (wide-central-stripe) shirt from the 80s is only so popular because we've associated it with a period of Saints success. I'm sure a similar period of (relative) success will make us like this shirt... Maybe grudgingly :-)

Personally, I'm not keen. Nothing wrong with change, but I think this has gone too far from our traditions. If I had anything to do with it, I would make the pinstripe wider. Say about 2 inches. And I would have black shorts. Apart from that, it's fine.

so it's £12 to get two numbers and 3 letters, and £4.50 postage if u buy online

now that we are top tier, anyone know whether these will be on sale anywhere else, and if so where?

makes me sick going into jjb by west quay and seeing newcastle shirts and no saints shirts...

The fact that we've pretty much gone against all club tradition..?

So did winning consecutive promotions or wearing the sash for the first time in over a century. It's red and white, it's got a Saints badge...I love it all the more for the fact it creates such interesting conversation on a forum...........!

If we are doing this to reach an 'asian market' then we are well and truly selling our soul.

This Asian market theory is absolute tosh! It's a kit for one season only (the last season of the Umbro contract) and probably done because last season's sales were relatively poor because ALL of out fan base has at least one from previous seasons, very similar. Pound to a dollar, we will be back in read and white stripes next season.

It's barely red and white, which is kind of everyone else's point.

Pretty telling that they've put me Lee at the front of various shots, including his famous goal celebration -remind me how many games he's played for us?

Of course, that doesn't mean its dictated this season's choice of kits but we're certainly alive to the asian market angle, even if NC and the marketing dept are fooling themselves if they think its make any real difference to sales.

Exactly. If the internet had been live in the early 80s, people would have probably moaned about the Air Florida and Rank Xerox kits but instead, they are prized because we had a superb team. Likewise, why is a yellow and blue away kit popular? Because of the FA Cup win of course. Kits, unless they are really vile or notorious (Fiorentina's home kit from the 90s that appeared to have far insignia on it from memory, Arsenal's horrific yellow and green away kit and Chelsea's vile grey and orange number) are defined by the team that wears them and how they fare. The Pony chevron kit was horrible but MLT's heroics saved our pride. Likewise, we could have had an amazing kit in 2004/5 but Davenport, Jakobsson, Van Damme, Nilsson and Bernard would still have been wearing it and we'd still have been deservedly relegated for buying too many poor players.

None, but there are only 4 Umbro teams in England now, and it's identical to Sweden's home kit except colours and collar.

Relatively speaking, yes it is. There are only so many 'different' things you can do with a football kit. As I've said.before, I can see why some might not like it, but if you think the design process was a quick, lazy half hour meeting then you're wrong, they'd have put loads of thought and time into, particularly the 'concept'. Whether it's any good or not is another matter altogether.

Blame the club, they won't let anyone else sell them.

JJB and SportsDirect in West Quay, probably £10 for number and name.

Also, Prem sleeved patches are £5 there, and you've ALWAYS had to pay extra.
