essentially, what we have is yet another look at a red shirt with white stripes.....there is only so much you can do and this design pretty much wraps that up...is there any other way of having red and white stripes after this..?
Exactly. Just a different take on it, probably better than charging £40 for a new shirt that only has a couple of minor tweak from the one you paid £40 for a year ago? For what it's worth I think they're both pretty smart.

Change is always hard to take, me for one always felt a little confused singing (shouting) red army when it could have easily been white army. Confusion gone this season at least at home matches anyway. It's different but as the latest lead in to the atical alluded to there is thinking behind it. the poster of the team in lines with the stadium behind it looks really arty and imo very good (wife wont let me hang it in any of the rooms so the shed it will have to be). Bit like a liverpool kit, but if that helps NA and RL raise there game for the challange ahead then fine by me. I think once we're used to it and get the season under way it will be fine. COYR!!!!

Would have been interesting to see the reaction if we'd have had black shorts and white socks.

I don't mind the shirt too much. The logo is a bit naff but the shirt itself is quite smart. Its just tying it with red shorts and socks which seems a bit weird.

I wondered why the all one colour on this occassion. However always looking for the positive I thought perhaps there's footballing reason? Perhaps where players are told to get their heads up and look before passing, if all one colour then decision making before passing is less confused and reaction time quicker.

Can you imagine the uproar on here in 1896 when we went from quarters to stripes?

People would have been boycotting the club, throwing back st's and generally getting shifty on web forums left right and centre.

That is hard to imagine considering that never happened, we have never gone from quarters to stripes.

Sounds a bit of a stretch but it is true that red is the best colour to have in a kit. Dunno if it's psychological or like you say cos the players see their team-mates that much quicker, but:

Man Utd > Man City

Liverpool > Everton

Arsenal > Tottenham

Southampton > Portsmouth

Bristol City > Bristol Rovers

Nottingham Forest > Notts County

Wouldn't surprise me at all if Cardiff Reds are more successful than Cardiff Blues!

It seems to me that the players aren't overstruck on the kit - see Sharpedo's tweet etc - I therefore have revised my season predictions downward to relegation scrap and possible relegation. If the players where a kit they love (ala last season's home and away) then they feel more confident and play better. If they play a strip that they feel is awful, they will play worse. Which means our home form, which is crucial in the premier, is going to be at least slightly affected by this travesty of a kit. I think it will the worst kit in the premier, and why the hell is it all red. FFS.

The shirt itself is okay, but the colour makes in very hard to wear with anything other than white/black shorts and sock - which would be man utd. The away kit isn't bad. But in no way are either of these kits a touch on last years home or away. They were ****ing gorgeous and were the best kits we have had in a long long long time. We have gone from that to something which makes me turn my head in embarrassment. And please, fire the moron who thought that conceptually a red kit and a white kit was a clever idea - how much did he get paid for that dip**** brainstorm.

Never liked Saints in white shorts with the home kit. I remember the uproar when Hoddle previously suggested we might go for it.

Agree definitely not with a red and white shirt - but with a red shirt, it would keep the red and white motif with the traditional black captured in the socks (i hate white socks - black socks are what made one of the old hummel kits so great). But we would then be mancs rather than scousers

I"d agree with this too. We've gone for all red which I dont think we've ever been and really doesn't feel like us. I like black shorts and white socks.

I think people need to stop saying its red and white stripes. Like it or not, It's all red. Liverpool didn't where 'stripes' when they had that same kit in the eighties. Pinstripes are barely stripes and on the pitch and on TV we're going to be all red.

Oh well. We'll get used to it.

It's clearly not all red though is it? See the picture at the top of this page.

Ah, but in HD the pinstripes will be clearly visible!

Seriously, though, i can see the shorts being swapped around for some matches where the home side wears a single-colour strip, e.g. Chelsea away. (and red socks with Chelsea wearing white ones)

We shall see. All of the feedback I've seen so far is people saying they don't like the home kit but do like the away one - plus Saints have worn predominantly white for the last 3 years.

If we'd had the away shirt with black shorts & red/white socks as our home kit I'd have been happier. It's the all red look that doesn't look right as a Saints kit.

The new kit is awesome, I'm going to get Dalglish printed on the back of mine.

Sums it up for me - is Brookside still going?

Think we need to make a few signings to divert our attention away from the most uninspiring unoriginal and unimaginative design conceivable.

I quite like to look of the shirt as the traditional stripes can appear a little dated, but I won't be buying it because I don't think this style it will last. Looks to me like it will be a one-season wonder and its too far removed from the Saints shirt to be usuable in future years. You can wear stripes from past seasons and still fit into the crowd but this shirt will be for this year only and I'm not going to buy a shirt every year.

It's a nice shirt. I won't be buying it as I refuse to let my love of Saints be exploited in that way and anyway I can't afford it - not so easy for parents and it's a free world if you want to buy , buy it .It doesn't make a whole lot of difference to me what they wear but for what it's worth I think they should stick to stripes. Yes for sentimental and traditional reasons but also for more longer term commercial reasons. In the short term a lot of people will buy the shirt but if you want to market yourself as a national and international brand surely the shirt is a good way of being recognised. Everyone can recognise a Barcelona,Real Madrid, Juventus, Man U , Newcastle, Arsenal or Spurs shirt but Saints? It changes every season.

I don't normally buy latest saints shirts. Sometimes get one in a sale, but never bothered about the latest etc. But might actually get the away shirt as I quite like it and we're back in the premier league. So sales are up 1.

I really like that away kit, would be more than happy if that were the home kit. The red kit just looks too over powering, white shorts, red socks with the red shirt looks far better. But really this is just a storm in a tea cup, I never liked the single diagonal red stripe until most of the season had gone, now view it as one of the best ever.

I thought the way they were talking we were going to get a far more adventurous design, something akin to the Croatia kit with small red squares on a corner of a white back ground.

Can someone explain why they think the away kit is OK and the home kit is crap ? They are the same, but inverted.

I think they are both crap.

Well, at least you're moaning about this and not our lack of signings I guess.

Umm Saints shirts/colours aren't recognisable ??? eh. everyone knows we're red and white stripes. Yes we had the Sash for 1 season, apart from that always red & white stripes, that's our colours.

It's fair enough if you don't like it, but it certainly can't be described as 'unoriginal' or 'unimaginative' can it.

We didn't wear red and white stripes for pretty much the whole of the 1980s.
