Best game this year?

Thinking about how we will play in the prem got me thinking about which was our best played game this year. Perhaps not the best result, but the best played.

Living in the U.S. I only get to see the televised games, so saw around ten games this year. For me our 3-1 loss at home to Reading was our best played game this year. I thought the passing and control of the game was magnificent, only the end result due to three quick break goals and sh.ite defending was poor. We totally dominated that game with -from memory - over 60% possession and 19 shots on goal vs 6.

If we play like that every week in the prem and bolster our defence we will easily survive.

3-0 beating of middlesborough at home. at the time they had the best defensive record yet we dominated them comfortably.scored for me our best goal of the season, the 20+ passing moved finished off by connolly

This was probably our best most complete performance, west ham is up there too due to the significance of putting them in their place. Was made even sweeter after fat sams coments about needing to stop our midfield from passing theirs to death then not being able to stop us from doing just that.

Agree with OP, I thought our play against Reading was outstanding and few teams in the Premiership would be able to live with our open play. If only we hadn't gifted the opposition three goals!

After that, Middlesborough at home.

After that Ipswich away - although that was a bit open.

Pass of the season? Morgan's flick in the above game! Sensational!

This.

By far the best football played at SMS in the last three seasons.

Forest at home was a cracking game with a great atmosphere and good opposition who played an open, attacking game. Could have gone either way and neither team really deserved to lose. Great game of football.

Who can forget the injury time of about 6 minutes in which Forest didn't even touch the ball.

Agree with this - even though they hadn't had a great start I think this was seen as a good test of our progress. We came from behind as well with RL topping off with a hatrick.

Ipswich away must have made a few raise their eyebrows

As some have already said Ipswich away some of our play was outstanding the best I have seen a Saints play for many years the quick passing & interplay blew Ipswich away & we could have won by a bigger margin top quality at home we played well against Leeds Boro & wet spam but Ipswich was the game I thought we would be good enough to go up

I'll probably get mis-interpreted saying this, but I don't think there were that many "great" games this year. Lots of one-sided wins, with some frustrating defeats, not too much else. My choice is definitely Ipswich away though.

Not too many 'great' games, I'd agree with that. That was mainly down to us being ultra professional though and knowing when the job is done. Good team.

After Millwall I just sat there pondering 'how the >!,. we had just won' - it seemed like another MK Dons moment when the prospects for the season just seemed to turn around.

But Peterborough away was my favourite. Weather was awful but everything else was great; from Guly in the warm up taking pot shots at the crowd (presumably for making him play football in a hail storm), to an old-style packed STANDING stand, to a great atmosphere, to a devastating start from Saints when the game was won in the first ten minutes.

I enjoyed both west ham games -proper atmospheres and a sense of occasion. Reminds me why going back to the prem won't all be soulless doom and gloom.

Ipswich and Leeds away were also up there.

And finally the 2-2 against the Skates was probably the best south coast derby in years.

Actually, thinking about it, Leeds at home on the first day was pretty awesome wasn't it?

They didn't know what the hell had hit them and it totally set the tone for the season. You could sense the confident flow through the players after that performance as they all believed they were good enough for this level.

We totally took the **** out of Leeds that day.

Fantastic performance. Boro were a decent team and by the time we had finished they were chasing shadows and just didn't know what had hit them.

Ipswich away was jaw dropping at times, so that gets my vote, but my lad phoned me from Leciester away and said we would be promoted, if we played half as well as that again..... and we lost that match.

Leicester was my 1st game of the season due to being overseas and I walked out of the ground beaming with my nipper and we knew then we'd go up.

What I will say.

Best moment - for pure adrenaline and 'grrrrhhh get in factor' - Billy's flick on the corner to go 2-1... in the 89th minute

Worst - Norris' volley, two minutes later...

Like coming home to find the woman you love on the threshold in all the gear, with a wicked smile, bright red lipstick and her gorgoeus best friend...

Only for her to greet you by using those 4 inch stilletos to kick you in the balls!

3-0 Win of Middlesborough at home. Very good team goal that DC scored cannot remember how many passes. Middlesborough came to St Marys with the best defence at the time and we were all over them. Great game to watch. Pure football !!!

Best Game of this year Millwall away, which was this years MK Dons game 2-1 down with 5 mins to go and end up winning

Best Game of the Season Ipswich away as good a display as you could wish to see, total football and passing the ball around at ease, adn some great goals and as others have said the pass of the season from Morgan to Adam for our fourth goal.

I was really proud of Saints that night and for the first time thought that promotion might be on the cards this season

Torquay Utd in the league cup. The ground was nice and empty so there were no queues for food or the toilet. Parking the car was easy and getting away after the game was a breeze. The highlight of the 4-1 win was Forte's goal in the 93rd minute. If he hadn't have scored that we'd have only won 3-1.

What a season! Countless professional performances, and that's what many of them were, 'performances' rather than out-and-out thrilling games, though we still played plenty of good stuff as well.

I saw about 15 games and can't remember seeing a bad one, I saw lots of good ones, lots of perfromances, and when we didn't hit the heights we usually ground out something. I only saw us lose twice all season, Palace in the Lge Cup and Middlesborough away right at the end.

Best games? Ipswich away is head and shoulders above anything else, West Ham away was a 'big game', Pompey home was a great game and a great occaision (tho not a great result!), I also thought P'boro away was entertaining and a great come back by the team from the disappointment of Reading; I also enjoyed Forest away massively. Dellhurst 2 was also a very solid performance from the team, great numbers but not sure it quite hit the heights off the pitch in the way that we thought it might.

I saw routine home wins against Brum and Doncaster and Palace, a very determined effort against Hull who on the day were maybe the best 'team' I saw in the league(?), an interesting and tight duel with Cardiff at home, and a slightly below par effort against Ipswich at home (how we missed Lee as an option from the bench in the run-in).

Reading looked good at their place but we scrapped a tough point and I had them down for second (!) from there on in, Derby away was similar as we scrapped a decent point, Palace in the League Cup it was good to see the youngsters and the strength of our support, awesome effort; and with the bonus ball of Coventry at home to come I wasn't too deflated by the reult at the Riverside as the travelling away support again showed itself in fine numbers.

A terrific season to be a Saints fan; real value-for-money stuff and so good to see a bunch of players who really do look as though they are as proud to wear the shirt as we are!

I didn't go to Ipswich away which I'd expect people to say we were good in, but we were pretty good at home to Middlesbrough and Hull, and excellent at Barnsley until Chaplow got sent off.

As I said at the time, I thought we were marginally better than them over the 90 minutes but significantly better at finishing. We played much, MUCH better than that in pretty much every match until we played Burnley away and then Cardiff away and struggled for most of the game in both.

Best games for me Barnsley away, thought we were fantastic up until Chaplow got sent off then back to the walls.

Peterborough away was great, Guly taking shots at the crowd in warm up.

Middlesbrough away great atmosphere until the referee bottled it.

Forest away (well technically home for me), just to annoy my Forest mates and Morgan's great strike.
