forever a red and white Posted 30 April, 2012 Share Posted 30 April, 2012 Having read many of the threads on here about buying new players to ensure survival next season, I actually think that the players that got us here deserve the chance to prove themselves, and none more so than Kelvin after his loyalty three years ago when he was taking the youth goalkeepers for training without a contract and the fact he has tow fantastic seasons in goal, and this year he was named NPC goalkeeper of the year! alpine_saint Posted 30 April, 2012 Share Posted 30 April, 2012 The sentimental side of my agrees with you, but i am worried if we do this we could be irreversibly behind the pack in the relegation zone by the time the January transfer window opens. We need some sensible specific strenghening over the summer. Not a new squad, just a couple of new faces. RM, CM, CB imo necessary. GK is not an urgent issue for me. Matthew Le God Posted 30 April, 2012 Share Posted 30 April, 2012 I think a new keeper wouldn't hurt. Would keep Davis on his toes, after all Bialkowski and Davis have both been at the club for 6 years now and a new face to give them both some competition might drive them on. sotonist Posted 30 April, 2012 Share Posted 30 April, 2012 It's going to be difficult to justify replacing him. I think we just need to bolster the defence in front of him for now.
skintsaint Posted 30 April, 2012 Share Posted 30 April, 2012 I'm a bit worried by his last outing at this level but Sunderland were pretty **** all over the park that year. I'm sure if we had an option to bring in a better keeper we will but as stated above not an urgent issue.
stev2001 Posted 30 April, 2012 Share Posted 30 April, 2012 He's a class keeper and does need a chance to prove himself. Just one worry, has he got a long shot weakness? If he has then he has a real problem in the PL.

Glasgow_Saint Posted 30 April, 2012 Share Posted 30 April, 2012 Quality but how much? Great if we can get him for free if they go under. They will accept resonable bids imo - they have to! Plus he has a buy out clause rumoured to be £2m

Similar age to Kelvin so would make for great competition between the two.
Micky Posted 30 April, 2012 Share Posted 30 April, 2012 If anyone deserves - Kelvin does. Could've warmed his ass on West Hams bench for the last couple of seasons, picking up big money for doing naff all. Decided to stay and see it through (could have gone horribly wrong), so in my book has earned his chance. By all means - get a quality 2nd in, somebody who will push him hard for the position - but I would stick with him, either 1st choice or back up. Sheaf Saint Posted 30 April, 2012 Share Posted 30 April, 2012 I'm a bit worried by his last outing at this level but Sunderland were pretty **** all over the park that year. I have a vague memory (or maybe I dreamed it... not sure) of some Mackem fans coming on this board after we signed him to say that we had got a great keeper and that all bar one of the many goals they conceded that season were actually the fault of a very suspect back four. warsash saint Posted 30 April, 2012 Share Posted 30 April, 2012 GK is a must ... sadly we cant rely on Bartos as an understudy.
Wiggles31 Posted 30 April, 2012 Share Posted 30 April, 2012 Kelvin will be our no. 1 next season defintely but we need a younger goalkeeper to eventually replace him.

Nope. I vividly remember the Sunderland fans coming on here and telling us we were mad for signing him.
Cabrone Posted 30 April, 2012 Share Posted 30 April, 2012 Allan McGregor That would be my suggestion too, quality keeper who would fit straight in. KD has had a magnificent season and has been incredibly loyal but prem attacks won't spare him any mercy because he's a 'good guy'. If you want to know what we will be facing week in week out next season just cast your mind back to what the Reading strikers did to us, 3 decent attacks, 3 goals. My No 1 priority would be to get the very best keeper that we can between the posts, could be worth at least 10 points over the course of a prem season. Someone on another thread suggested Cammy Bell at Kilmarnock who might not be a bad shout too.
keegan Posted 30 April, 2012 Share Posted 30 April, 2012 I can see us signing someone like Kasper Schmeichel, young upcoming keeper who would love to be a premier league understudy, and definitely has the quality to fill Kelvins boots when called upon, unlike Bart. S-Clarke Posted 30 April, 2012 Share Posted 30 April, 2012 I would expect Davis to continue as our number 1 next year, but we'd sign someone younger behind him to really push him. To be fair to bart, he's been here 7 years now and has never established himself in the team - he's had his chances too, so I think it's safe to say he's never going to be a regular for us and will probably go in the summer. Such a good servant though, never moaned about being on the sidelines. Ultra pro.
bridge too far Posted 30 April, 2012 Share Posted 30 April, 2012 Slightly off tangent, but Kelvin was on South Today just now (with Morgan) and both gave a very good account of themselves.
BridgnorthSaint Posted 30 April, 2012 Share Posted 30 April, 2012 Nope. I vividly remember the Sunderland fans coming on here and telling us we were mad for signing him. Proves what they know - Kelvin is a quality keeper and a loyal servant to the club. He hasn't made too many mistakes this season and deserves a chance in the Premiership. A quality understudy maybe in case he is injured and to stop complacency.
JPTCount Posted 30 April, 2012 Share Posted 30 April, 2012 in January I said we would need to replace him but his performances since have been in another level. I say sign a promising young keeper who can compete for a place, learn from davis, and eventually replace gin un a couple of years if that doesnt work, spend £20mill on a keeper in 18 months

We need to replace Bart and have an up and coming keeper who can challenge for a place and eventually succeed him. If Kelvin got injured early next season then we would be in big trouble
