How much do we need to spend in the summer?

Nicola Cortese has talked the talk, and thus far he has also walked the walk, but now it gets serious. He has spoken about champions league football and this is now our target because we are a Premier League club. So what do we need to be spending in the summer for his words to retain credibility?

I've heard somewhere that Nigel Adkins wants 4 new players this summer, so I reckon somewhere around 20 mil on players and then of course we will need to pay stupid wages if we are to build towards the objective of finishing high up the league.

Impossible to put a figure on it. Our best signing of the last 3 years cost £1m and is likely to be able to a decent job in the top flight. Bargains are out there, Tadanari Lee for example was a free transfer.

Put a ****ing figure on it you tedious gimp.

I reckon we'll spend £15m tops.

£6m - £7m on the likes of Hooper plus £2m - £3m each on 3 other players to bolster the midfield, defence and goalkeeping departments.

We'll then "suck it and see" until the January transfer window.

IMHO of course

I don't think the focus on money is important, it's getting the right player that fits into the team and better than we have got. So what if it's a new record signing or a lower league player - if they have shown the right attributes they would be worth more than the sake of signing an expensive player because we have the money.

Need someone who has good Premiership expericence, dont care for a 1 season journey man, just need that expericence i reckon our first signing will be a "marquee" (for us anyway) player, then i think we will spend approx 12-15million

Depends on the player and the position. I reckon we'll get 5-6 players (including young players like we did with Stephens, Gallagher etc), spending circa £16m in the process. Can't see NC or NA wanting to pay massive amounts for players that we're not desperate for.

I would be amazed if we spent more than 15m on transfers, but it's going to be interesting to see the names we actually sign.

We know targets are already in place and work has begun, so I'm fairly confident quality will be coming in. NC & NA up till now have been good at springing the surprises and whilst not all signings have worked, those we have spent relatively big on, have all been a success.

I think we will see a fair bit of Jos & Chung type signings rather than Joey Barton and all hail that!

We won't actually know the real figures as Saints never release details of their transfers. I hope we don't spend £7m on Hooper though. That's a lot of money for a player who has only ever done it in Scotland. I'd be pretty cheesed off if we'd spent that much on McCann or Skacel.

He was the Championship's 3rd top scorer in his last season in England (aged only 22 years old), he outscored Andy Carroll and did it whilst at a team like S****horpe United who didn't exactly create a lot of opportunities. He also has a good scoring record in Europe for Celtic. I know the SPL is poor, but your statement is harsh I think.

Of course we probably won't know the exact figure because of our love of undisclosed fee's, so I propose taking the mean figure from the papers (excluding The Daily Mirror of course).

As this is now a competition I would live to revise my figure to something more accurate and bagsy 22 mil.

Billy Sharp did it in an equally poor Donny side and he only cost £1.8m. Not saying I don't rate Hooper and he wont come cheap, but £7m is an awful lot. Scoring a couple against Rennes and Udinese isn't that amazing.

No chance will we spend that. We spent £4.7 million last summer to come within a gnat's co ck of winning the Championship.

I reckon £10m well spent and well directed on promising young stars who people have scarce heard of and who turn out to be half-decent...

Think about it. Which positions are you filling?

CF - Lambert, Sharp, Chung, Guly (+1?) - assuming Barnard will be off, even?

MF - Morgan, Cork, Adam, Chaplow, Hammond, (Punch) (+1?)

DF - Richardson/Butterfield, Fonte/Martin, Jos/new, Fox/Harding (think it's apparent Jaihdi is too old)

GK - KD, BB (+1?)

Whether you think any of the players listed above can cut it in the Premiership is moot - the manager might!
