Shufty Zubrik Posted 1 May, 2012 Share Posted 1 May, 2012 It was called "The Friends Provident St Marys Stadium" before, what's the difference? Everyone will still call it St Marys except commentators at the start of live matches/highlights. I've always held the same opinion that it is St Mary's. The Friends Provident bit never held any value because they had no real connection - they just bought the right to be coupled with St Mary's. That said IF it became the Liebherr Stadium I would switch in a moment. It would be right because of the man and what he means to us. And I think we'd all be very proud to call it The Liebherr rather than St Mary's. St Mary's is where it is, not what it represents and there could be no more meaningful representation of what Marcus Liebherr means to this club and city. Window Cleaner Posted 1 May, 2012 Share Posted 1 May, 2012 But would anyone object to "the liebherr stadium"? Wouldn't we then be publicising a multi-national enterprise for free? Can't see us doing that. Our owners are one small branch of that family, the mainline Liebherrs don't give us anything as far as I know.

Everyone will still call it St Marys except commentators at the start of live matches/highlights. There was a significant difference between it being called the "Friends Provident Stadium" and the "Friends Provident St Mary's Stadium" when the place first opened, and I'm glad Saints fans made enough noise to get it changed. Without it there was no guarantee Saints fans would have called it St Mary's at all, even though it was a preferred term by some. Newcastle United fans will also point to the significant difference between the three recent names of their ground : St James' Park, sportsdirect.com@St James' Park, and The Sportsdirect.com Arena. Frankly when the sponsorship is annoying to the fans, you have to wonder how wise it is to go ahead with it at all. FP had a sensible view of it, Mike Ashley doesn't. Rebel Posted 1 May, 2012 Share Posted 1 May, 2012 £1M for your company to be seen by 650M people for 40 weeks of the year isn't bad to be honest. Cheapest sponsorship in PL history id have thought. That's good if your a consumer brand with access to all those people in all those markets - and the ability to produce enough product to satisfy that demand But not if your a b2b recruitment company in the IT industry - sponsoring the industry awards for £50K would have a much greater ROI How many IT directors/managers or recruitment managers will watch Saints on TV - and then come away with an idea of who aaap3 are and what their product or service is? Sponsorship generally is a very ineffective marketing tool - it only works as part if an integrated marketing campaign when you have a full story to tell and use the other channels to do it FlyBe's sponsorship on the other hand made a lot of sense - a consumer brand with a local target market and a business link with Southampton as a place

The9 Posted 1 May, 2012 Share Posted 1 May, 2012 Yes but it may be a channel for pouring funds into the club (legitimately) when the FFP regulations hit home. When announcing the FFP regulations specific reference was made to ensuring that all sponsorships were legitimate and reflected the market rate. They basically stated outright that just chucking money at a club in that manner wouldn't be accepted, and wouldn't be within the rules.

sammysaint Posted 1 May, 2012 Share Posted 1 May, 2012 Its true they were going to pull out as they didn't want to pay 1 million as they feel that it would be a decent investment, but now they have decided to give it ago because of the overseas deal with the premier league there hoping will increase company profile, which as mentioned would help having close to a million people watching us outside the uk for the games vs the top 5/6. Standard Chartered - you got an account? So that's also for B-2-B reasons (to take clients) Aon - that's mainly a B-2-B brand Aurasma? And Investec sponsored Spurs Europa cup shirts... So pretty much most of those which are not gambling brands or brands for the far east/middle east market or brands owned by the owners I would say... Legod Third Coming Posted 1 May, 2012 Share Posted 1 May, 2012 So you're saying 4 out of 20 are B2B? (plus Spurs' european sponsors) Sponsorship's are done for all sorts of reasons aren't they... Venkys? Own the club. Etihad? Own the club. .. Then there's the betting companies who want to build far east audience: Sportingbet 188bet ... The point is they're not just B-2-C brands - and even those that are, you would be amazed why the deals have been done... or you might not, you might be in sponsorship. So fair play to aap3 if they can make Saints work with their marketing strategy... St Marys is more than where its at, its the original name of the club and reflects our nickname, and for those reasons I would want to retain St Marys in a any corporate renaming. Also it has legs whilst we are forever indebted to Markus and his family one day we will have other owners and then what, sticking with St Marys would in my opinion give the name more protection from the whims of egotistical owners who may only see the Liebherr title as relevant to the previous owners

I think it's unfair to say the majority of sports sponsors are just B-2-C brands if you don't factor in the motivation for the sponsorship. Vodafone sponsored the Derby for years simply because the Chairman enjoyed having lunch with HRH The Queen... The vast majority of sports sponsorships today are bookmakers or brewers - that has everything to do with them often being the preferred betting partner, having the pouring rights and so on. I work with a major company who sponsor a massive event and probably 1/100th of the audience (public) knows why - it doesn't matter, they sponsor it becuase it gives them a dinner at which all of their worldwide buyers will attend... Likewise, aap3 are probably not too fussed that half of the Northam know what they do, unless they're in the market for a new core infrastructure! I know the point you're making, and I agree to an extent it's unusual for a 'smallish' firm to find themselves on the front of a Premiership football team, you just happened to run into someone who sold sports sponsorship for a living* and has some time on his hands tonight... *not for long it was bloody hard work!
