Puncheon's reaction on Saturday

Notwithstanding his rather uninspiring performance when he came on as a sub on Saturday (I suggest we should give him the benefit of doubt that he was following the instructions he had been given by Nigel), it was interesting to see Punch doing a celebrateory dance in the corridor on the BBC highlights and this quote on the BBC website:

"I'm pleased we did this as a unit and team. I'm happy we are there now and we have done it. The chairman has done really well to turn things around and now that we are there we need to stay there." Winger Jason Puncheon

I'd love to be a fly on the wall when Nigel and Punch talk about his future.......do you think we are going to see him in Saints' Premier League line-up next season?

Maybe Punch's "new best friend" Mr Cortese will insist on it..!!??

He's not a bad player, but I don't think he's the sort of player that fits in with the system Nigel plays - hence his limited appearances.

I'll never forget his performance away at Leeds, one of the worst i've ever seen one of our players make. Truly inept and I'm not surprised he didn't feature again after that.

I'd expect him to be sold in the summer as I see no place for him here.

I think the most telling thing was the complete lack of effort he put into running for the ball immediately before the sliding tackle right at the end of the game.

Yet somehow I still think he's going to be starting in August next season unless we sign someone obviously better, he's got more Prem experience than most of our squad and it'll be handy early on.

lol at the OP analysing an eight minute contribution in a match that was already over. Puncheon could actually be the answer to our right midfield problem and, given he can play left or right, could work the swap over with Lallana quite effecitvely. Just needs to work at following instructions to the letter - and maybe develop his defensive game a bit. His first couple of games after his 'talk' to the Don were close to MOTM performances so we know he has it in him. Seems to fit in well with the other players too so the 'billy big boots' tags are probably way off the mark. Having said that, he is an interesting character. Followed him on twitter for a while but concluded his 'street' talk was indecipherable!

Of course there is also Guly who could equally make that slot his own.

Make-weight in a Matt Phillips deal would be lovely....

I thought the quote on the BBC site sounded like something Cortese would've written.

Certainly more of a PR job than most of the stuff he puts on Twitter, and even that has often looked ghostwritten since the apology farce.

Talented player and if totally taken back into the fold and on the new bus....great..

With pre season and a fully focussed Jason Puncheon ..would be a very good player for the squad in the big league...

IF.......NA AND NC have got his full attention and 100% commitment..with fitness will be like a new signing..

His sub appearance was as instructed and with others basically closed out the game....

The club may well have decided he is worth the chance....

Hope it works out for the mighty Saints and for Punch...

He did quite well when he returned from exile. I remember Nigel giving him the high five and hug treatment after his first game back. Didnt he manage him somewhere else before Saints, or did I dream that?

Nah, you dreamnt that!

He did ok on his return game, but didn't do anything special. He worked hard and put in a good shift, but at the end of the day he's gone back into old habits of actually not doing a hell of a lot!

He came on as an early sub against West Ham away and was very impressive. But that's the last time I've seen him do anything. I didn't want to post anything negative over a brilliant weekend but I couldn't believe the total lack of effort he demonstrated when he came on on Saturday, he didn't want the ball at all and hardly moved. Bizarre and a waste of talent.

I must have watched a different game as I don't think it was lack of effort at all on Saturday.

I think NA asked him to just sit in and play a holding midfield role to help us kill the game off - a role he has played before, e.g. Blackpool in the cup.

Thought he did a good job of essentially just keeping the ball. He played lots of short passes and simple triangles.

He did absolutely nothing wrong considering we were 4-0 and just closing the game (and season) out.

Read into this what you will, but he was the first player to leave after the game on Saturday - we were waiting down the chapel car park, and he came out of an exit still in his playing kit with a saints bench coat and trainers on, signed a few autographs, a couple of pics then jumped into passenger side of range rover which then proceded to speed off.

Richardson, Connolly, Reeves, Doble and Dickson followed about 10-15 mins after and as we were walking back round the stadium, Martin, Jaidi, Seaborne and then Morgan emerged too

JP was just posing, and never once looked to get forward, played with hi sback to the goal. would rather have seen DH get on instead. I am sure Adkins would love to sell him, problem is we have already tried and failed! He is tainted goods now.

It's such a strange one with Puncheon. He obviously has talent but there is clearly a big ego there as well. Many people said he did really well immediately following his return to the squad this season, but from what I saw of him (Leeds away and Hull away) he was utter dogsh**e and couldn't have been less interested.

If he can motivate himself and show the talent he has more frequently in the PL then great, but I certainly won't be disappointed if he leaves in the summer.

He's rubbish and Cortese would be clever to move him on in the summer. Dead wood, get him off the wages. However, peversely, he has Premier League experience and is a fairly versatile player, and is still at a good age. Me? I'd ship him off. However I wouldn't be surprised if he were still with us in August.

You either watched a different game OR (more likely) you don't know how to judge a performance.

He made not one forward pass and at times had space in front of him and he just turned and played the nearest possible pointless pass. Then, immediately after the game I see Adkins say "you can just pass for the sake of it, we don't want that. You have to do something with it." wether that was a dig at JP, I don't know.

Fact remains, he was woeful. I was really hopeful when he came back into the fold that he would be like a new signing, but he done exactly as he did when he first came to us. Sort of impress in first few games, then disappear. Quite how you can defend his performance (or lack of it) on Saturday, is beyond me. In a cruising performance, with confidence absolutely sky high, about to enter the Premier League, he still looked sh*t. That tells you something.
