buctootim Posted 30 April, 2012 Share Posted 30 April, 2012 Cheers for that. Its been really heartening to see Norwich and Swansea do well this season - proving that good management and a motivated team can work better than throwing excessive amounts of cash around. I hope Saints continue do the same.

saintfully Posted 30 April, 2012 Share Posted 30 April, 2012 People talk a lot of rubbish about newly promoted teams. Always on about the massive gulf, but we're not trying to compete with Arsenal, Chelsea etc. There isn't a massive gulf whatsoever between the top NPC teams and the bottom 6 or 7 Premier League teams, especially if you improve your squad in the summer after promotion. You can't predict when a team will struggle really. Wolves weren't obviously awful at the start of the season. Likewise, Saints got relegated once they'd become a mid-table side and forgotten how to fight relegation. Our squad was plenty good enough, no-one predicted relegation at the start of the season, but we were rubbish. Just need to avoid doing a QPR. Heard some inept defences of their signings, but 'they were the best we could get for the money' was when I gave up. Huge wages and fees for players on the way down in their career, not there for the team, pure mercenaries and egos. Helguson isn't as good as Zamora or Cisse, but they looked a better team with him in the side. Same with many of their signings, but Warnock tends to be a short-term manager and just panicked with the money. Hughes should have known better. Ends up with Cisse celebrating his goal bonus when you're 6-1 down, nice. Great post. I think momentum is important in the prem and that we went down when we lost it after our FA Cup triumph against lowly Aresnal (we did win it didn't we?). I hope this time that we'll see the continued investment that maintains upward thrust - right up to Champs League??? Also, seems to me that buying the right personalities is almost as important as the right talent so am glad that so far we've not bought any massive egos. Crazy Diamond Posted 30 April, 2012 Share Posted 30 April, 2012 Lallana said that they knew they'd surprise people this year because they had got so used to winning in League One that they knew they'd do it in the Championship. I think a lot will depend on if that mentality transfers into the Prem.
jasoneuelllfanclub Posted 30 April, 2012 Share Posted 30 April, 2012 We should definitely emulate Swansea and Norwich as they both have a good up and coming British manager and kept core spine of the team. I truly believe with 3-4 quality additions to the squad we can have a successful season. The true test for newly promoted teams is the 2nd season as teams will have worked them out. This is why I fancy Swansea to go down next season but Norwich should have another variety about them to stay up plus there is almost certainly going to be 3 teams worse than them. There will be at least 10 teams in the premiership that Saints should not have any fear of playing next season home or away.

Cheers though I'll be happy with 4th from bottom next season to consolidate. Spent a year living in a bloody freezing house around 100m from Carrow Rd back in my student days, you could tell the score on a Sat afternoon just by listening to the cheers. Can also remember drinking in the pub that was under the main Wensum? stand with the likes of Robert Fleck and Ruel Fox. Is that bar still open? If I can get the readies together it's one I'd like to make a trip to, would be good to have a pint in the Ribs of Beef\Edith Cavell again. Ric Posted 30 April, 2012 Share Posted 30 April, 2012 Thanks, mate - I've always liked Norwich and I've been really glad to see you guys doing so well this year. I hope we can emulate your success in the top flight next season - though I'd be happy with just staying up (at the start of this season I had no expectation of "doing a Norwich", and would have been happy with a top-ten Championship finish!). Wes Tender Posted 30 April, 2012 Share Posted 30 April, 2012 Thanks for that PaulyH. When we were promoted last season, many on here took comfort that you were promoted in successive seasons, therefore there was no logical reason why we couldn't emulate your feat. OK, some counter-argued that it was easier for you, as the calibre of clubs in the division was higher this season, with the likes of WH, Birmingham and Blackpool joining the division, Leicester and the Skates spending big and other clubs like Leeds and Cardiff also looking good for a play-off spot. I'm encouraged that Holt has carried on scoring at the top level and forgive me if I believe that Lambert is the better player. You were a team with a good team spirit that was fomented by them staying together and knowing each others' game. You wisely kept the core of the team together and fine-tuned it with some good signings. I expect that we will do much the same. There is a lot to be said for the unity and spirit of an established squad with a confident upwards momentum and a good manager capable of getting the best from them. Some relegation zone teams like Wigan have proved this by taking the scalps of the league's giants recently. But your achievement and that of Swansea, are a good marker for us and our expectations that we can gain mid-table obscurity and then press on from there the following season. The9 Posted 30 April, 2012 Share Posted 30 April, 2012 Even if we're utter gash (which I don't think we will be), we'll still be better than that Derby side from 2007. S-Clarke Posted 30 April, 2012 Share Posted 30 April, 2012 It's a tricky one, it's hard not to get carried away and expect a decent season next year because we've been winning every week for 3 years now. Next year will be a tricky one because we'll lose more games and probably by some heavy score lines, so it's Important we all keep a level head when this happens. In general terms though, I don't think the premier league is that strong. There are alot of average teams up there (blackburn, bolton, wigan, WBA, ) that I'd fancy our chances of giving a game to now. So we will compete with the teams in the bottom half and our winning menality will give us the edge in the opening months, similar to what happend with Norwich and Swansea. QPR did it all wrong though. They didn't think about what they needed, they just went out and replaced everything (including the manager). That's why they have no continuity or team ethic and is probably why they'll go down. I don't even think Man Utd and Chelsea are as strong as when we were last in it, neither are Arsenal who are beatable if you pressure them in the right way. So in general terms, other than Man City, I'd say it's a weaker league than when we were last in it. I don't think it'll take too many changes to make us really competitive in the bottom half. Legod Third Coming Posted 30 April, 2012 Share Posted 30 April, 2012 Norwich has always been our parallel and nemesis. Who can forget those 4-3, 5-4 games - losing to them in the latter stages of the league cup, but beating them en route to Wembley for the JPT - thanks Holty, your rolling about bought us the injury time winner..? They/you were relegated with us and Manchester United when we became the first side ever to be relegated from the top flight as the third bottom team (before then it had always been the bottom two teams). And now we've emulated them/you straight back from League One to the big time. Great parallels but I'm hoping we don't emulate the Canaries next season. Personally, I'd be disappointed not to be challenging for a Champion's League place...
