badgerx16 Posted 30 April, 2012 Share Posted 30 April, 2012 But what is the general inference in the mass media when a manager gets the 'backing of the Board' ? The biggest risk is that next season, when we have established our credentials in the top flight, another club starts eyeing NA.

Sheaf Saint Posted 30 April, 2012 Share Posted 30 April, 2012 "I love being Saints manager, I've got a long-term contract and I want to be Southampton for as long as possible. "I have no plans to leave. The objective is to be at Southampton for a long time, and I want a right good crack at the Premier League." He deserves a good crack at it as well. Since he took over he has surpassed the expectations of just about everyone and I know I am not alone in wishing that we can at last look forward to some stability at the club following the managerial merry-go-round of the last two decades. I want to see him given a good few years to really mould this club in the same way that Ferguson and Wenger were allowed to.

doddisalegend Posted 30 April, 2012 Share Posted 30 April, 2012 Changing managers never did us much good. I'd love Nigel to stay for years and be our Ferguson with a team that evolves slowly with him. Next year might be tough though the fans and players have got used to winning and I'm willing to bet the gripping will start if we lose a few on the trot. NC wouldn't be the first chairmen to make a change if he can see his PL jackpot cash slipping away either.

John Boy Saint Posted 30 April, 2012 Share Posted 30 April, 2012 (edited) Totally agree. NC made his backing public when he extended Nigels original contract. When he extended it inside 6 months of Nigel "being in the building", for man who is portrayed as a hard faced whatsit, that is a massive statement in my book. Sometimes people on here read far too much sensationalist newspaper reporting, and when there is nothing coming out read into it the worst. We need to learn we are a privately owned Swiss company, and the Swiss do not wash their laundry in public, so we, the public, are only going to be told what they deem we need to know, whilst running the club quietly and efficiently. ...................... Don't think many can complain about the running of Southampton Football Club over the past 3 years. John Boy Saint Posted 30 April, 2012 Share Posted 30 April, 2012 To be fair there hasn't been any sensationalist newspaper reporting about Adkins leaving. None. Apologies, didn't explain myself there....what I meant to say was too many people reading sensationalist story's in the paper, results in them putting a sensationalist spin on most situations read in everyday life : thus with our very private way of doing things at Southampton a few folks start seeing what isn't actually there, whipping themselves up into a lather over it. st.sj Posted 30 April, 2012 Share Posted 30 April, 2012 Listened carefully to interview and it is certainly very clear that Adkins wants to stay and that is great news. Probably me misreading so no need to jump on me as only expressing an opinion but there were things he didnt say that still leave me slightly uneasy. He said about great relationships with many people and the players but did not say the chairman. He mentioned sometimes you have to stand your ground as there are different views sometimes, but he was sure every one wanted the same thing, ie the success of saints football club. Who was he referring to, is he in disagreement with the chairman on some important issues? Why would he say if there was a parting of the ways he hopes it would be done in the right way [he wasnt referring to him leaving in the right way as he can control that and has already shown his good principles and loyalty in the way he left S****horpe]. I just cant help thinking all is not perfect between him and Cortese. I really hope I am wrong I really do................... but............. Thats exactly what I thought but didnt want to post because too many people look for divisions when there arent any. In this case there may be, a lot can be said by omission imo. Lets hope idf there anyy issues they are because of two valid opions about how to get the best for the club and are resolved amicably. One that crossed my mind was a difference over a Director of Football role - but it could be anything or nothing.

I just cant help thinking all is not perfect between him and Cortese. I really hope I am wrong I really do................... but............. As bewildered as I was when Adkins blurted out the original statement, it's all starting to make sense now. Go back to Adkins state of mind at the end of the game, the emotions and the over riding need to be with the players. Well bearing in mind he stated that he will be sitting down with each one of them before they go on holiday. It's not difficult to understand why he got so emotional and why he considered his own future as well. Cortese is very ambitious and driven that it is not surprising the pressure that can be created from even such a positive atmosphere. If Adkins has to spell out to most of those players they don't have a guarantee of a place next season, that's going to come very hard to someone who feels he owes them everything for where they are now. Added to that his own vulnerability must have surfaced with a chairman looking at plans for a 45k capacity and CL football. It's amazing how success can generate such emotions but you only have to look at Pep Guardiola to get the idea. I know from his wife that Cortese is a nightmare on matchdays because of his nerves. Well it must have really been up to maximum after this run in to the season. You only had to look at the way it got to all the players from their comments, but Adkins managed to install the necessary professionalism until it all got too much after the event. It would not surprise me if the DofF raised it's head again when you consider the sort of money we will be shelling out. I wouldn't say there is nothing to worry about but it mostly comes from a positive angle and the possible price of success.
Saint Fan CaM Posted 30 April, 2012 Share Posted 30 April, 2012 What a bunch of bed wetters some people are! Nigel was only stating the bleedin' obvious - I love this club and I want to be here for the foreseeable - but I'm as vulnerable as any other Prem Manager if I don't get results. The realisation of getting to the Prem also brings with it the added pressure and for a split second he probably reflected on what he'd got himself into! He would be completely daft to jump ship at this stage of his career. And Cortese would be completely daft to not back the Manager that had orchestrated back-to-back promotions, unless the wheels were seriously coming off the tracks big time. I truly believe that with the right circumstances Nigel will become our 'Fergie'.
st.sj Posted 30 April, 2012 Share Posted 30 April, 2012 your post epitomises the problem with this site. Would it possible for you to try and comment on an opinion with out being personal about a poster or posters. I have posted an opinion that I was perturbed slightly about what Adkins did not say in his interview. I am not personally wetting my bed about this, purely posting an opinion, [which could very well be incorrect] on the forum, which I guess is the point of the forum. Come on we are in the premier league now, lets try and raise the standard of the forum by not making comments that you after all probably would not say face to face with people. saints-til-i-die Posted 30 April, 2012 Share Posted 30 April, 2012 I hope there is no problem and that Adkins is here for the long term. I really hope so. However, I do find it odd he hasn't mentioned how great the Chairman is (which he did during the January transfer window and numerous other times). Also his interview the other day seemed to suggest that he wanted to stay (eg defending his win record) and obviously today he mentioned about having to sometimes stand up for what you believe or something similar. Could this be linked to Cortese? Perhaps Adkins wants to stay but maybe Cortese wants something Adkins is against? A mate of mine (no idea how reliable, probably not much) but he said he's heard of problems behind the scenes. I hope this is a load of rubbish! In Adkins we trust! He did say something about Cortese in one of the interviews - may have been on Sky sports, can't remember though. Anyway why is everyone getting so uptight about all this? Adkins made it clear today he is very happy here - he did not have to speak to Sent again this morning he could of just stayed silent. And then that would of been wrong as well. Can't we all just enjoy being back in the Premier League instead of over analysing everything that is said (or not said)

david in sweden Posted 4 May, 2012 Share Posted 4 May, 2012 (edited) I think this will be a calmer few months for NA. That's a managers life for you . Tears when you lose, and sometimes ..even tears when you win ! of course there's new players in ?..planning and training, tactics etc, but when he came ..he had to pick us up from the bottom of L1...and then get promoted to Npc..and then again ..for the Prem. and now were there. The Prem.(as it is now) is unknown territory for almost everyone at the club. Yes I know we have a few players who've been there, but none were in good teams and playing well at that time, so it'll be a bit special for everyone. I hope that NA can wake up a few mornings next week and relax.. knowing that he doesn't need to prepare a team for Saturday. I'm sure he'll spend the summer watching even more videos of the current Prem. sides ..and trying to plan their downfall..and then a long hard look at the fixture list comes out. Then the pre-season.. hoping that no-one gets injured and that those who are will heal properly. The pre-season games..still hoping for no injuries...then " the Marcus Cup "..and.....THE BIG KICK OFF. WOW !..where did the summer go?
