Maggie May Posted 1 May, 2012 Share Posted 1 May, 2012 I feel sorry for him. I can't blame him taking the job as it is the pinnacle of an English manager's career. He seems a genuine, traditional chap who is clearly proud to be given the chance. But the subdued media reaction to his appointment is worrying. No fanfare, no saviour, it's like they are setting him up for the fall.
St Marco Posted 1 May, 2012 Share Posted 1 May, 2012 Maybe it is just me but couldn't care less who is the manager. Have little to no interest in international football anymore as honestly it isn't anywhere near the highest level of football. We will have a whole summer of advertising, adverts designed to make you feel proud while at the same time wanting you to buy their beer. Pundits saying it is our year then act shocked when the players looklike they can't be arsed and go out. Then they say how the leagues are to blame because not enough English players playing even though we have some of the best players in the world who seem to do well in the champions league for their clubs etc While I hope we do well, I won't feel sad nor angry when we get beat. Times have changed and the only team I really care about is Saints. I'd much rather see us play then watch the national team play. However it is funny dodgy Harry was over-looked! No fanfare, no saviour, it's like they are setting him up for the fall. Surely its the complete oppostie. Bigging him up and saying he'll be the saviour would be setting him up for a fall. I think this is the perfect appointment for England, compared to the likes of Sven, McLaren or Capello. For years I've been wanting England to go into a major tournment without masses of media hype about winning it. Being underdogs with a passionate english manager has every chance of being a success. For the record, I think with Hodson as manager we'll get to the semis of Euro 2012.

pap Posted 1 May, 2012 Share Posted 1 May, 2012 I'm happy with this. During his punditry at the last World Cup I think came across as someone who had a good understanding of the game, or at the very least, an articulate communicator. I'm not sure that you can take too much from his time at Liverpool - to paraphrase one report I've read today, Roy Hodgson's job became a lot harder after Dalglish was passed over for the position. Elsewhere, he seems to have carved out a reputation for getting the most out of teams. Granted, Harry is a good motivator too - but I get the feeling he'd have his favourites. Hodgson may be inclined to take a more form-based approach.

Badger Posted 1 May, 2012 Share Posted 1 May, 2012 FA can't afford Redknapp. That simple. or the risk associated with him, the FA are probably concerned by his media relationships, and that the tabloids might have a field day once 'arry were appointed. Saint-Armstrong Posted 1 May, 2012 Share Posted 1 May, 2012 Check out The Sun's Front Page tomorrow (nothing like supporting whoever gets the call): Hilarious. Yet again The Sun at the forefront of classy humour and wit. For what it's worth I hope Roy does well just to **** them all off. Boring from The Sun and not really necessary. Then they say "affectionately known as Woy due to his speech impedement" as if to justify it and make it look harmless. Whether it is or not, it's just boring, lame, and unprofessional. Gutter rag. SuperMikey Posted 1 May, 2012 Share Posted 1 May, 2012 Personally I think he'll be a very good England manager. He's got nous and the experience at International level to know what to expect in a major tournament - something Ol' Twitchy doesn't have. People will be pleasantly surprised with him. His career (in England at least - and with Switzerland and Finland), has all been about overachieving with limited resources. He goes in, stabilises, organises and overachieves. We're not anywhere near the best so this is what is needed. Go Roy.

The good thing is also that he might clear out some of the players who haven't been performing in the last few years and get some younger, hungrier players in. I think we won't see the likes of Lampard/Ferdinand/Terry in the squad again after this tournament (probably sensible to keep them around now considering it's only 36 days until the tournament starts and you don't want unrest in the squad). JackanorySFC Posted 2 May, 2012 Share Posted 2 May, 2012 Really pleased with that appointment, wanted him from the start. Great CV, articulate bloke that speaks 5 languages and is well read. 2 things annoy me though: 1- The assumptioon that everyone wanted Harry to be manager. No they didn't, seriously anyone I know that actually takes a serious interest in football (not a bandwagon jumper that will hang a St George's cross from their 8th floor balcony and screams "In ger land" at the top of their voice down the pub with their bird p***ed up on Carling) really wanted HR. In fact, most could see that Capello was treated shabilly and tried his best (pefect qualifying, beat Spain etc) with a limited squad. 2- Today's Sun. I used to work for them and today I'm embarrassed by that. Taking the p*** out of a speach impediment is bang ut of orer. As stated above he's a seriously intelligent bloke that reads books I've never heard of and watches foreign films I'll never see. The night before Liverpool vs Napoli RH decided he would take a walk round the back streets of Naples to take in their culture and try to pick up the local lingo (Neapolitans slightly differently to northern Italians, a language RH is well versed in), the squad basically thought he was slightly weird to do something like this (without an entourage/ guide etc). Sas more about them than Roy in my book. Good luck to the bloke, really want us to do well in the Euros now, hand on heart even as a proud Englishman I honestly don't think I'd feel that way with Harry in charge. Bearsy Posted 2 May, 2012 Share Posted 2 May, 2012 If I was a journo i'd be asking lots of questions about the FIFA World Rankings. bridge too far Posted 2 May, 2012 Share Posted 2 May, 2012 "The FA and the Press Complaints Commission (PCC) receive a large number of objections relating to the front page headline in The Sun newspaper, regarding Roy Hodgson's manner of speech. An official complaint will not be made but the matter has been raised with the newspaper. FA chairman David Bernstein says: "We are delighted at the media response to Roy's appointment but are disappointed with the headline in The Sun, which we consider is in poor taste and disrespectful." Bearsy Posted 2 May, 2012 Share Posted 2 May, 2012 Then Roy will get fed up with all the questions and he'll be like: "Look, I'm not worried who we rank over or who rank's over us. Smirking_Saint Posted 2 May, 2012 Share Posted 2 May, 2012 I see The Sun have started already to lay the boot in im so tired of the media when it comes to England in particular Lets all be honest though, with the exception of the vitriol held by us Harry was the first choice of many, well the vast majority of press, fans and players. He is a better man motivator arguably the int managers greatest tool considering the small time they have in contact with the players. Also he would have been afforded more time both by players and press. Im not too dissapointed with the roy appointment, I think he will do a steady job, we will probably get some rather dour football but then Sven was cagey and he had arguably our better tournament in recent history. I just think the FA and in particular the only football man on the panel have both bottled it and let previous get in the way. Forba cheaper yes man. All in all I am dissapointed, but then this is the FA

All in all I am dissapointed, but then this is the FA Sorry but how would you know who the better "man motivator" is? For every player who claims that Harry is great, I'd bet youd find another who wouldn't have the same view. I'm sure that player that he tore to pieces in front of a television crew and cameras felt very motivated. For me, this great man manager nonsense is another myth peddled by the media. Harry's formula is tried and tested. Spend money whether the club can afford it or not, chuck a few players together an see what happens....and then jump ship at exactly the right time so that no finger can ever be pointed to him. Smirking_Saint Posted 2 May, 2012 Share Posted 2 May, 2012 Once again, Harry is not the clubs chairman, if they dont have the money they should not spend it Simples Plus its wildly regarded that he gets the best out of his players and is regarded as a great man manager, yeah he took us down but thats as much Lowes fault as the saggy chopped ***** Nevertheless he would have been the best choice for england for me. He constantly puts pressure on chairmen to spend money. He's done it publicly at every club he's been at. Telling Levy via the media to pay Modric more and claiming that they need to spend more to make champs league this year and last are recent examples. Puts pressure on the chairmen as the fans then start to expect. Another one of his methods. Fair enough if you think he's the best choice but I think the guy is a bit of a fraud. He's a liar and seldom ever takes any responsibility for any failings. Always playing the poor old arry card.

Cestrian Saint Posted 2 May, 2012 Share Posted 2 May, 2012 People are saying that the FA couldn't afford 'Arry. Fair enough but they've given a 64 year old a 4 year contract. Will they never learn? Just like all the others he'll probably get the sack after a couple of years and it'll end up costing the FA a small fortune. The problem in all of this is the FA. It's an old boys network and needs a major shake up.
