Roy Hodgson for ENGLAND!

What do we think then?

The FA have approached WBA regarding him, and WBA have granted permission.

I think he's excellent personally and has a real understanding of the game at all levels. He's managed big European clubs in Europe, and international nations.

He's turned WBA's fortunes around and he made Fulham into a terrific premier league club. It didn't work at Liverpool but that's because their fans have stupid expectations and fail to realise that they're no longer as good as they once were, for what it's worth he had a better % than 'King Kenny".

Not a surprise to me - you can see the headlines now - the dream team of Roy and Pearce, tactical nous/experience plus passion and patriotism.

The FA, like most sane people in this country know the simple fact that Redknapp is an absolute c#@t.

Sensible appointment, only worry is if he can handle the current bunch of ego's.

Errr nobody has been appointed yet - they have only been given permission to talk to him, and that probably hasn't happened yet. As Scooby says - this could all be a bit of a screen yet.

How tedious, anyhow, a perfect, descriptive profile icon.

Hodgson was the obvious choice from the beginning, except that the media were blinded by their love for 'Arry. That's the problem now, though, they have egg on their faces and will want to take it out on Roy. Just take one look at his managerial record and you will see it is excellent....in many countries. Being a resident of Finland, I know what a good job he did there with very limited players - you can't get a smaller pool of talent to work with than in Finland. Look at Switzerland also. My only hope is that he picks hungry and receptive players, and kicks out the likes of Gerrard, Terry, Lampard....and of course Rooney, who is suspended anyway. Time to clear out the deadwood and stick 2 fingers up to the Press, Roy. The same Press that hounded you out of Liverpool, paving the way for the magical free-spending "King Kenny." He's a decent man aswell. Thank Christ that spivy secondhand car dealer hasn't got it. I bet those players punting for 'Arry are choking on their cornflakes in their 250 grand kitchens. Well done the FA!

I'm not normally someone who criticises potential managerial appointments before they even happen but I have a nagging doubt about Hodgson.

He strikes me as one of those managers who is superb at getting the best out of 'non-superstar' players, which is why he has excelled at Fulham and WBA. His international appointments were also for lower profile nations.

The one high profile job he's had was Liverpool and his style didn't seem to mix well with a team of egos.

I can see Hodgson turning into a Taylor or McClaren - the press will see to this the moment results don't go our way.

As I say, it's out of character for me to pre-judge a situation like this but my gut feel is that this would end in tears, so to speak.

I obviously hope I'm spectacularly wrong if he is appointed as I have a lot of respect for Hodgson.

Frankly I don't really care how good Hodgson will be. I'm just enjoying seeing Redknapp overlooked after 'everyone', including him, assumed he was a shoe-in -- always assuming he can read the papers well enough to understand it properly. In effect his "I'm too stupid to commit tax fraud" defence in court has caught up with him IMO. It made him impossible to appoint as England manager.

RH is has always been my choice, but he'll get a hard time from the press if the "fans favourite" (or more accurately the presses favourite) doesn't get the job.

I wonder if the press have been bigging up HR because they have more dirt on him, and are setting him up for a fall, and HR is aware of this & actually turned down any approach from the FA?

Not nearly as much dirt as the ecilop found on the pc they seized in that dawn raid that scared his mrs so much, that computer that they had to return and totally disregard any incriminating data that had been found. All rumour of course but imo someone somewhere knows a lot of what he's been involved in.

Why did they have to return it again? Was it really just down to him not being at home at the time?

Suits my agenda and that's all that matters.

Not a bad appointment at all, imho (assuming he gets the job.)

I do like the way people are pointing out his previous international experience; switzerland, finland and the UAE. Looks like the FA have finally worked out our level.

Quote attrributed to MLT, posted by an acquaintance of mine on FB. I don't know the source.

[h=6]"There are a whole bunch of issues - if you look at the committee that is selecting the next England manager. One of them, I think I'm right, is (Director of Football Development) Trevor Brooking. I think Trevor and Harry had a falling-out many years ago and I'm not sure if that's played a part in one of the reasons why they've decided against going for Harry. The FA has not been known for making fantastic choices in the past and seems to have continued that tradition. I've never really been excited by Roy Hodgson's teams and I think that's where my reservation stems from. I'd like to see the England team play with a little style and I think that's what the fans want as well"

Sorry - can't unbold it

I agree with the qoute, dissapointed HR seems to be overlooked but think RH could be a good steady apointment, I just hope we play decent attractive football and give youth a chance.

It just looks to me like another FA yes man.

“Apart from 2 Swedish football championships, 8 Swedish Cups,2 UEFA Cup finals, a Danish Superliga, a Danish Super cup, taking Finland to their highest ever FIFA ranking, guiding Switzerland to 3rd in the FIFA rankings and to their first European Championship in 36 years, what has Hodgson ever done?” enquired one fan of being hugely unrealistic.

“Hodgson may be English, but he can’t even pronounce his own name properly.”

Hodgson for England

With the FA insisting that Hodgson is the only manager that they’ve approached, England fans have been left perplexed that Harry Redknapp has been overlooked.

“Surely Harry is the right man to take England forward,” insisted one bemused fan.

“You only have to look at the clubs he’s managed and what he’s achieved.”

“Okay, his only trophy is an FA Cup that he won with Portsmouth, but there’s more to his achievements than that.”

“It’s all about laying the foundations for the future.”

“I mean ,you only have to look at where Portsmouth are now.”

The sooner everyone (especially press) realise that we are not and should not be favourites for major tournaments, the easier it will be for a manager to actually have a chance of doing anything more than the odd QF.

Can see the front page of The Sun now with a picture of Roy as a donkey or something in about 4 months time. Poor bastard.
